Jerry Herman’s musical “Hello, Dolly!” dominated the 18th Tony Awards which took place at the New York Hilton on May 24, 1964. “Hello, Dolly!” entered the ceremony with 11 nominations and walked out with ten awards including best musical, best actress for Carol Channing, original score for Herman and for Gower Champion’s choreography and direction.
Other musicals in contention for multiple awards that year were “High Spirits,” based on Noel Coward’s classic comedy “Blithe Spirit,” “Funny Girl,” which transformed Barbra Streisand into a Broadway superstar, and “110 in the Shade,” based on the straight play “The Rainmaker.”
Bert Lahr, best known as the Cowardly Lion in the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz,” won lead actor in a musical for “Foxy,” based on Ben Jonson’s “Volpone.” The musical was not a hit closed after 72 performances. Also nominated in the category was Bob Fosse for a short-lived revival of Rodgers and Hart’s “Pal Joey.

It's well known to fans of "The Wizard of Oz" that actor Ray Bolger was originally cast to play the Tin Man and famed comedian Buddy Ebsen was cast as the Scarecrow. They swapped roles at Bolger's insistence, as Bolger had a personal attachment to the role; he was inspired to become an actor after seeing Vaudevillian Fred Stone play the part on stage when Bolger was a child. Ebsen was fine with changing roles, although he had to drop out of production due to makeup problems. The silvery Tin Man makeup contained powered aluminum and Ebsen breathed in big clouds of it, making him sick. At the time, many merely assumed Ebsen had an allergy. Ebsen was replaced with Jack Haley, and the makeup was altered to be a paste instead of a powder.

This year marks the 85th anniversary of the colorful classic "The Wizard of Oz." Featuring a masterful use of Technicolor, the film offers some of the most vibrant hues ever seen in a motion picture, creating a stunning contrast between the fantastic world of Oz with the sepia-toned, mundane real world of teenager Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland). Over the 85 years since the film's theatrical debut, it's been re-released in theaters over and over again, and it's always ranked as one of the greatest films ever made. Even now, the film is still being celebrated, and this time the milestone 85th anniversary is bringing a new collection of Funko POPs to the table.

With the 2023 Oscar nominations now in hand, it’s clear that Margot Robbie’s exclusion from the best actress race, along with “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig’s director snub, has outraged the blockbuster film’s massive global fanbase. Oscar nominations for supporting players America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling haven’t calmed the social media fury over what is perceived by Robbie fans as an unfathomable and unforgivable oversight.
What everyone seems to be forgetting is that when it comes to Oscar love, especially for actors, Oscar voters annually choose spinach over sweets, meat and potatoes over champagne and caviar. They like their movies serious and meaningful, and their actors tortured by real world woes such as physical disabilities, addictions, mental illness and all the oppressions and injustices that our mad mad world has to offer.

The episode of Revisited covering Hellboy II: The Golden Army was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Following the beloved Hellboy adaptation that was released in 2004 by Guillermo Del Toro, fans wanted more. As reviewed on a previous video, that one is excellent, so it was not surprising when the sequel was announced. Thus, in 2008, Hellboy II: The Golden Army (watch it Here) was released, and it ruled!
Let’s start with the rating here and it’s a complicated one for me. It’s actually hard to rate it because my reviewer brain, the part of me that is highly cinematically educated wants to give it an eight out of ten, which isn’t bad, but my heart wants to say it can’t be rated on a normal scale.

It’s time for Universal Pictures to shine at CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas, where the studio teased many of their upcoming projects.
Now that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is breaking records, Chris Meledandri of Illumination was on hand for a victory lap. He said you have to keep making original products not based on existing characters. He showed us a sneak peek at Migration, written by The White Lotus’ Mike White. It’s a classic family road movie, except they’re ducks. He says this will feature the “subversive humour” people know from their movies.
Meledandri offered a sneak peek at Migration, which follows a family of ducks who try to convince their overprotective father to go on the vacation of a lifetime. Kumail Nanjiani and Elizabeth Banks voice the parents, with Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, Carol Kane, Keegan-Michael Key, and David Mitchell also starring.

Few costumes in movie history are as iconic as the blue and white checkered dress that Judy Garland wore in “The Wizard of Oz.” MGM’s classic film was one of the first movies to be filmed in Technicolor, and the initial reveal of Garland’s Dorothy stepping out into the colorful Land of Oz is instantly recognizable both for its narrative significance and the technological breakthrough that it signified.
Many film memorabilia collectors would kill to get their hands on such an important piece, but while Garland wore several versions of the dress while filming, only one has been thought to remain in existence. Until now.
The New York Times reported that a second dress worn by Garland was recently unearthed at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. In 1973, the dress was given to Father Gilbert Hartke, a priest who was in charge of the school’s drama department.

It feels as though we're heading toward the home stretch.
The events of Filthy Rich Season 1 Episode 6, like the previous installment, has proven that the second half of the season will be stronger than the first.
The bad news is that Filthy Rich's cancelation is official, but at least we get to see it through to the end.
Ironically, there was a near-finality to the installment. Perhaps it was because of how everyone rather abruptly shifted toward being on the same side.
Some of the character changes have been so abrupt that it's jarring, but then a lot of things you have to chalk up to it being a soap drama.
The real Jason woke up from his coma, and it was surprising how unfazed Mark and Rose were about the potential fallout from this.

‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ Review: Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter Reunite for a Most Excellent Sequel
“Bill & Ted Face the Music” has a high-fluff effervescence. It’s about how Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves), those chuckle-brained metal heads who speak like Jeff Spicoli with a thesaurus, have just 77 minutes to travel through time and get the song — from themselves! Because they wrote it already! Whoa!! — that will unite humanity and save reality as we know it. As they trip further and further into the future, they keep meeting older versions of themselves, a variation on the doubling-up-of-identity-through-space-time stunt that the first two “Bill and Ted” films played with, only here it gets a major metaphysical stoned workout. Meanwhile, Bill and Ted’s respective daughters, Thea (Samara Weaving) and Billie (Brigitte Lundy-Paine), who are of course chips off the old blockhead, go back in time to gather a band of musicians that includes Louis Armstrong, Jimi Hendrix, Mozart, and Kid Cudi.

Professor Marvel’s crystal ball probably didn’t predict that the Avengers could go on to star in The Wizard of Oz, but a deepfake called The Avengers of Oz, posted back in March by NextFace, manages to get the job done.
The clip, which re-imagines the classic 1939 musical fantasy film using deepfake tech, casts Tom Holland as Dorothy, Robert Downey Jr as Scarecrow, Chris Pratt as Tin-Man and Chris Hemsworth as the Cowardly Lion, roles that were originally played by Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr respectively.
You can watch The Avengers of Oz below, but it cannot be unseen.
A deepfake earlier this year that imagined Holland and Downey Jr as Marty and Doc Brown in Back to the Future instead of Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd initially provoked a negative response from the young actor, though he later found the fun in it.

When a big, prestigious, internationally celebrated arthouse filmmaker, hoisted by his acclaim, gets the chance to make a “crossover” movie somewhere other than his native country, it tends to seem like a great idea on paper, yet often doesn’t work out so well. Examples of this time-honored phenomenon range from Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Zabriskie Point” to Ingmar Bergman’s “The Touch” to Wim Wenders’ “Hammett” to Asghar Farhadi’s recent “Everybody Knows” — movies in which you can hear the voice of the filmmaker, though not nearly as vividly as you did in the films that made his crossover possible. But “The Truth,” the first movie written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda (“Shoplifters”) outside his native Japan, doesn’t fall into that more-mainstream-yet-lesser trap.
“The Truth,” which Kore-eda shot with a French crew, is set in Paris, and it’s one of those dramas in which a beloved, larger-than-life movie-star diva — in this case,...

Harvey Fierstein’s glorious voice, that frog with a human stuck in it, remains so powerful you might swear you still hear it, loud and, well, loud in a Torch Song that can often only shout over the Harvey-shaped hole at its center.

Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) and Oscar-winner Mercedes Ruehl (The Fisher King) reprise their Off Broadway performances as the big-hearted drag queen Arnold Beckoff and his caustic, disapproving but down-deep lovin’ Ma.
Okay, so the slippers fit better than the roles that were custom-made way back when by Fierstein and a soon-to-be-Golden Estelle Getty. And no some of the gags don’t land. Urie is too trim for big-boned jokes, Ruehl...

A few days shy of his 75th birthday on Aug. 17, Robert De Niro hit the beach in Santa Monica, CA and took a dip in the Pacific. Though he’s marking his 50th year as a movie star, he’s never gone Hollywood — his hometown is where his heart is. "Hollywood is a place, an industry, and a state of mind," Robert has said. "But New York, New York is home." That’s where the most important people in his life are. "To me, family is everything," he shared. "My wife, Grace, my children, my grandkids [are] my entertainment, my art, my passion." Family has always come first for Robert, even though his parents — painters Robert De Niro Sr. and Virginia Admiral — divorced when he was only two years old. His dad came out as gay, and the family remained close; when Robert Sr. was stricken with cancer, Virginia cared for him,...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers follow for “Dietland” Season 1, Episode 3, “Y Not.”]
When IndieWire first spoke to “Dietland” creator Marti Noxon about her new AMC dark comedy, she mentioned a number of influences on the show. But while the premise has elicited more than one comparison to a lady version of “Fight Club,” Noxon’s go-to inspiration was “The Wizard of Oz,” specifically in how it visually represented the journey of self-discovery for Plum (Joy Nash).
“When I kept talking about visual references, I was like, I don’t want it to be one of these gray shows,” she said. “I don’t want it to be all blue saturated. I want it to be like a technicolor. It has a kind of musical quality. There are drab places, but then there are these other places that are just hyper-colored. Important life lesson: When you're talking to William Shatner, be very careful what you say, because it could very well come back to bite you in the butt. Case in point: talking to the actor (oh-so-famous for his role as Captain Kirk in Star Trek) about his newest project, the animated film The Steam Engines of Oz, in which he plays the Wizard of Oz. Things certainly begin somewhat innocently, with the comment to him that the story is highly enjoyable and the characters engaging and quite charming, while certain elements of the animation are....eh. "How do you spell 'eh'?" he asks good-naturedly, to which I suggest the way it reads here, e-h. All fine and good, until later in the conversation when I foolishly ask him, "What do you feel the strength of this film is?" "I thought it was the animation," Bill, who you'd never suspect is 87 years old,...
