With 2023’s compelling Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle The Covenant, Guy Ritchie took a more serious dramatic turn, away from the flashy action, glib humor and mashup of period settings with contemporary attitude that had characterized many of his biggest commercial successes. With its typically Ritchie-esque ensemble of quippy rascals, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare sees the director back on more customary territory. Sort of. Chronicling a covert World War II mission manned by a band of renegades, the movie is diverting but remains awkwardly stuck between a larkish caper and a more gripping combat action thriller.
Scripted by Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, Arash Amel and Ritchie, based on the nonfiction book by war specialist Damien Lewis, the remarkable story comes from British War Department documents dating back to Winston Churchill’s first term in office, which were declassified in 2016.

The Chosen‘s creator Dallas Jenkins never set out to make this series. After some setbacks in his professional life, the director and writer shot a short film for his church’s Christmas Eve service called The Shepherd, from the point of view of the shepherds present at Jesus’ birth. The film was a small production, and Jenkins returned to it after making a flop film that could have ended his career. Thankfully, it didn’t. In the Beginning… Dallas Jenkins: The Chosen was born out of failure. I [directed] a feature film, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, that got released nationally [in January 2017], and it completely bombed at the box office. I was left with a very uncertain future as a filmmaker. Absolutely, if that movie would’ve succeeded, there’d be no Chosen. I dusted off a short film that I had written about a year and a half earlier, about...

Angel Studios, the outfit behind one of summer’s biggest hits, Sound of Freedom, will release its next film and first original, The Shift, in theaters Dec. 1.
The sci-fi thriller stars Neal McDonough, Sean Astin, Kristoffer Polaha, Liz Tabish (The Chosen), Paras Patel (The Chosen) and Rose Reid.
It was written and directed by Brock Heasley for producer Ken Carpenter’s Nook Lane Entertainment.
“The Shift is a bold project that defies labels and is unlike anything in the market,” said Jeffrey Harmon, Angel’s chief content officer. He said Heasley came up with the concept eight years ago and made a short film for $500, eventually joining forces with faith-based Angel to crowdfund and produce a feature.
“The creative ethos at Angel fostered the opportunity to shape this unique blend of sci-fi,...

This post contains spoilers for the "Succession" series finale.
One good turn deserves another, except in the world of "Succession." Jesse Armstrong's endlessly quotable saga of the monstrous Roy family and their global media and entertainment empire has always been a tragedy at its core. Nothing desirable can happen to the show's characters without something awful occurring to balance out the scales and the series finale held true to that. No sooner had siblings Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook) buried the hatchet in the episode with a late-night swim and a smoothie so disgusting it's only "fit for a king" than they were divided once more, maybe permanently this time.
Just as Shiv was about to cast the final vote solidifying Kendall as the heir to their late father's (figurative? Logan's chair looks comfy enough) throne and killing the Waystar Royco-GoJo deal, she switched...

The dirty open secret about "Star Wars" is that it's always been assembled on the fly. George Lucas made dramatic changes to his script for what would become "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope" over the course of writing it, scrapping character names and overhauling the plot. He would continue this practice as he developed the original trilogy, even as Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side and evolution into Darth Vader became the focal point around which both the trilogy and, in time, the entire Skywalker Saga would come to revolve.
Perhaps that's why fans continue to have a hard time grasping Anakin's downfall and what caused it to this day. Lucas is on the record as believing that Anakin was the individual fated to bring balance to the Force in a prophecy that proved to be far more convoluted than originally interpreted. (Aren't they always?...

[This story contains spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi.]
Hello there. Come here, my little friend. Don’t be afraid.
For years, Star Wars fans have wondered about the gap in which Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi becomes Alec Guinness’ Ben Kenobi. And thanks to the most recent Star Wars miniseries on Disney+, viewers have a far better understanding of the evolution of the beloved Jedi knight.
With this week’s conclusion of Obi-Wan Kenobi, fans were let in on how Obi-Wan overcame his struggle to accept and move on from the tragic events of Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, which left him somewhat broken and the galaxy in peril.
And as it turns out, Kenobi didn’t spend 20 years in the desert as “a crazy old man,” as he was dismissed by Uncle Owen in A New Hope. Obi-Wan had at least one epic adventure left in...
