Grief is a concept that everyone with a heart can relate to, but it’s not always something that everyone with a brain can deal with. Riffing on Jean Cocteau’s 1950 classic Orphée and giving it a very modern makeover, French writer-director Jérémy Clapin explores that very paradox with Meanwhile on Earth, a strange, poetic, and endearingly surreal meditation on the counterintuitive ways in which we react when confronted with loss.
In a very literal way, Clapin has been here before, with his acclaimed and surprisingly poignant 2019 animated film I Lost My Body, in which the disembodied hand of a pizza delivery boy goes on a journey to find the rest of itself. This much more cryptic follow-up pushes the notion a whole lot further, and whether it works or not will be in the eye of the beholder.

Films starring Saoirse Ronan and Justice Smith are set for Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama section.
Panorama announced its first 11 titles on Thursday, seven of which are world premieres. The lineup includes Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun,” which stars Ronan as an antihero who must embark on a journey to find herself. “After years of excess in London, she seeks silence and self-reflection in her Scottish homeland,” the film’s logline reads.
Directed by Jane Schoenbrun, “I Saw the TV Glow” — which stars Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine and Danielle Deadwyler, among others — is also part of the program. In a press release, the festival called the film “one of the most idiosyncratic and fascinating works of the year, effortlessly crossing boundaries of genre, gender and trauma in this eye- and soul-opening trip.”
The annual Panorama Audience Award will be presented on Feb. 25. Berlin Film Festival is set to take place beginning Feb.

Perhaps it’s presumptuous to say, but I sensed during The Passengers of the Night that I was watching another film in the line of The Fabelmans or (God forbid) Belfast: a nostalgic reverie inspired by lockdown-enforced personal reflection. Though in this case, with Full Moon in Paris taking for Mikhaël Hers the place of whatever child-friendly movie little Stevie Spielberg or Kenny Branagh were gazing up at in wonder, with that film’s star Pascale Ogier and the way her life was tragically cut short curiously haunting the proceedings of this ostensible family drama.
A film that can be accurately described as very French (archival footage of Jacques Rivette from the Claire Denis-directed documentary even appears), and furthermore evoking Renoir, Pialat, and (for a more recent comparison) Mia Hansen-Løve in its elliptical yet always character-driven narrative, Hers’ film is a case of one that never quite shatters...

"To the pleasure of your company. Here with me." KimStim Films has debuted a new official US trailer for the French indie drama called The Passengers of the Night (also known as Les Passagers de la Nuit), which will finally be out in theaters this summer. The film first premiered at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival last year, but it hasn't made much of an impact since then despite playing at many other international fests. Set in 1981 in Paris, this is sort of an autobiographical tale of a French family and their interactions. Left by her husband, Elisabeth finds herself alone, responsible for the day-to-day care of her two children. She picks up a job on a night-time radio show, where she meets the free-spirited Talulah, a youngster she decides to take under her wing. The French drama "is filled with small acts of kindness that have profound effects." Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as Elisabeth,...

It has been over 20 years since Cédric Klapisch delighted audiences with his 2002 comedy “Pot Luck” about a group of twentysomethings sharing a flat in Barcelona.
Featuring the likes of Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Cécile de France and “Yellowstone” star Kelly Reilly, the film – also known as “The Spanish Apartment” – has spawned two sequels: “Russian Dolls” and “Chinese Puzzle.”
Now, French director is putting the old team back together in the Amazon Prime Video series “Greek Salad,” which opens Series Mania on March 17. But there is a twist.
“People often asked me if I would make another film about these characters. They are my family, but I kept saying ‘no,’” he says.

Rabia
A new voice in German cinema embarks on a journey that could have been pulled from the headlines but it’s the destination and possible examination into psychological darkness that could be the alluring facet to this feature debut. Mareike Engelhardt had early support for her project winning the Arte Kino International Prize and she lassoed the likes of Megan Northam and Lubna Azabal to explore a power-dynamic set in inside a women’s shelter in Syria. Rabia moved into production late last year and wrapped up this month. Grand Huit’s Lionel Massol and Pauline Seigland produced the film.

Reported by our friends at Cineuropa, Arte France Cinéma are getting behind a quartet of new projects – a pair that are on our radar and another two that are news to us. Finally … we got an update on Jérémy Comte‘s directorial debut Paradise, which will go into production in the fall of 2023. The French Canadian filmmaker gave us the masterwork Sundance-winning short Fauve back in 2018. Another feature debut in the works, Mareike Engelhardt‘s Rabia (which we reported on when Megan Northam and Lubna Azabal were cast) will also receive support.
Thierry de Peretti‘s À son image, (which translates to “In His Image”) is loosely adapted from Jérôme Ferrari’s novel of the same name, the story (which was co-written by the filmmaker and Jeanne Aptekman) revolves around several moments in the life of Antonia – a photographer who’s the victim of a road traffic accident in Corsica – and her closest friends.

"Save the cathedral… without losing a single life." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a mini-series titled Notre Dame, the second major production based around the Notre Dame fire in 2019. The moment this fire at the iconic cathedral made news around the world, I knew it would be turned into movies. Jean-Jacques Annaud made his own Notre-Dame On Fire film also releasing this year, and Netflix has made their mini-series based around the exact same concept - following the firefighters who went to work putting out the fire that night. Hervé Hadmar's Notre Dame series follows the story of the night of April 15th, 2019 in Notre-Dame Cathedral alongside the many firefighters and the impact the fire had on different characters across France. Starring Roschdy Zem, Caroline Proust, Megan Northam, Simon Abkarian, Alice Isaaz, Marie Zabukovec, Sandor Funtek. This looks like it has some gorgeous visuals, but it also...

"I often think of moments we spent together. They're like gifts." Madman Films in Australia has debuted an official trailer for a French indie drama titled The Passengers of the Night, ahead of it premiere at the Sydney Film Festival in June. The film first screened at the Berlin Film Festival, but it didn't really pick up any great reviews. Set in 1981 in Paris, this is sort of an autobiographical tale of a French family. There’s something about French films. The impeccably styled but lived-in interiors, the laid-back sensuality that feels like real-people sex, the cigarettes upon cigarettes upon cigarettes. The country’s entire oeuvre (has the word ever been more apropos?) feels like a smoky exhalation of the words “le cinéma.” That said, French films get away with certain things American films wouldn’t dare, for better or for worse. In “The Passengers of the Night” (“Les passagers de la nuit”), which stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as a newly divorced mother, meaning takes a backseat to mood, and character development happens on a whim. Still,

It’s May 10, 1981, and Paris is celebrating. French political junkies might know the cause for this revelry, but for the rest of us, the reason seems to matter less than the electric atmosphere enveloping the streets as people dance to the sound of honking car horns. Grainy, scene-setting archival footage is interspersed with the main action here and elsewhere in Mikhaël Hers’ period piece, which stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as a single mother looking to rediscover herself after being left by her husband. An airy, low-key drama that doesn’t suffer for its lack of narrative tension, “The Passengers of the Night” further proves the old adage about the journey mattering more the destination.
We first meet Élisabet (Gainsbourg) at her lowest: unemployed, recently single and responsible for two teenagers (Quito Rayon-Richter and Megan Northam) whose father has walked out on the family. That may sound like the setup for something dire,...

We’re back in 1981 — among placards, lapel badges and whooping young people. François Mitterand, a socialist, has just been elected president of France. It isn’t a date that resonates much now — certainly not outside France — but the palpable sense of excitement in the opening scene of Mikhael Hers’s Berlin Film Festival competition entry The Passengers Of The Night suggests we are about to take a sweeping look at lived history.
On to 1984, with Lloyd Cole’s “Rattlesnake” playing over a carefree scene of two boys on bicycles; again, there is the remembrance of things not long past.

Films by auteurs Claire Denis, Hong Sangsoo and Rithy Panh are part of the lineup in competition at the 72nd Berlin Film Festival.
Berlin’s 2022 selection spans 18 movies, seven directed by women, which will compete for the Golden and Silver Bears. The films originate from 15 countries, with 17 serving as world premieres. Two of the films are first features, both from women.
Artistic director Carlo Chatrian discussed the thematic throughline of “human and emotional bonds” across the selection, with the family unit serving as a key focal point in a number of movies. More than half are set in the present time, and two are within the pandemic era.
The festival hosts 12 returning filmmakers, eight of whom are in competition and five of whom already hold a Bear from Berlin.
The festival will go ahead as an in-person event, albeit with seating capacity in movie theaters reduced to 50% and without any parties or receptions.

A naturalistic, social tale, “Miss Chazelles” competes in the nine-title short film lineup at the MyFrenchFilmFestival, an entirely-online – even before Covid-19 – festival devoted to French productions launched by promotion board UniFrance, running Jan. 15 to Feb. 15.
“Miss Chazelles” turns on the rivalry between two young beauty queens in a rural village, and is the second film from director Thomas Vernay, who studied art direction at France’s Ecv school. Vernay’s first short, “Dryad,” premiered at Sitges Fantastic Film Festival in 2016 and was selected by more than 70 international events. Among its recognitions, “Miss Chazelles” lead Megan Northam took the best actress award at the prestigious 2020 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.
Variety talked with the young director about his career and plans for a feature-length version of his short.
What are you exploring when telling the story of these two young rivals?
The film takes place in the village of my childhood.
