As 2021 dawned, China shot straight out of the box office gate with a new record. On Friday, the market hit a milestone for New Year’s Day.
Estimates are coming in for January 1 at about Rmb 600M ($92M), besting the same day in all previous years. The big result was generated largely by new local title A Little Red Flower which has blossomed through strong word of mouth. This all comes as China ended 2020 as the biggest box office market globally, surpassing North America for the first time. As previously noted, this was on the horizon as early as October. Comscore estimates the total Middle Kingdom 2020 box office was $2.74B, although the China Film Administration has it slightly higher at $3.12B (Rmb 20.4B). Domestic box office is estimated at $2.28B, per comScore.

Cashing a check, that's what he's doing. Probably a pretty big one. Michael Douglas is on screens worldwide right now in Ant Man And The Wasp but that's not his only current big screen foray. Nope. Douglas is also on screens throughout Asia as a featured baddie in Yan Han's big budget fantasy action film Animal World, in which high stakes underground gamblers transform into creatures and beat the tar out of each other on board a floating casino. Yup. Yi Feng Li takes the lead part But Douglas is all over the marketing materials here chewing the hell out of the furniture as clearly nobody had the will or inclination to tell him to rein it in a little bit. Heh. Chinese release of...

Throw your Pooh bears in the air, and hurl ’em like you just don’t care!
The Olympic men’s free skate competition took place Friday night at Gangeung Ice Arena in PyeongChang, a rink that had been littered with plush Winnie the Pooh toys after Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu (the 2014 gold medalist with a thing for the honey fiend) completed his performance in Thursday’s short program. Indeed, Hanyu was in the lead going into the free skate, followed by Spain’s Javier Fernanzdez in second and Japan’s Shoma Uno in third.

Rising talents Chen Duling [pictured] and Song Weilong star.
Beijing-based Jetavana Entertainment is tapping into a new pop culture trend in China with cyberpunk fantasy Dream Breaker, starring hot young talents Chen Duling and Song Weilong.
Cult Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono is artistic consultant on the film, directed by Beijing Film Academy graduate Han Yan and produced by his partner in Octopus Garden, Chai Tao. The story follows a young girl who becomes trapped in an illegal Vr game while investigating the suicide of her father.
The film addresses a new youth trend in China, Er Ciyuan (literally two-dimensional), which is heavily influenced by sci-fi fantasy and Japanese manga and games.
“The Chinese audience is getting younger and changing very fast,” said Jetavana founder Ivy Zhong. “One of the reasons the box office slowed down this summer is that there were too many romantic dramas, which have been popular for the last few years, but now the...

Writer-director-producer Greg Sneddon.s Bhutan-set drama Arrows of the Thunder Dragon is Australia.s entry for the best foreign language film Oscar.
Set in the 1970s, the story follows brother and sister Kuenphen and Jamyang who live in a remote Bhutanese village where they learn traditional archery from their old warrior grandfather.
Their mother's sudden sickness gives Kuenphen the opportunity to explore the world outside the village while Jamyang must stay home to weave, cook and get married- a fate she is not willing to accept without a fight.
The self-financed film was shot on location in the Himalayan mountains with a cast of local highland village people and a Bhutanese crew including DoP Leki Dorji, none of whom had worked on a feature. Jill Bilock is the editor.
"I'm thrilled to bits," Sneddon tell If. A former Buddhist monk, he got the idea for the film while on a pilgrimage to the country.

Warning: Do not keep reading if you'd like to remain spoiler-free for the men's figure skating finals, which will be featured on NBC's Friday (Feb. 14) primetime broadcast at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.
The 2014 Winter Olympics men's figure skating finals went out with a whimper rather than a roar. There were a lot of falls and bobbles, plus Russian favorite Yevgeny Plushenko was not competing, so not only were scores lower than expected, but there wasn't the same excitement in the building as there could have been.
U.S. skater Jeremy Abbott rallied from his big fall Thursday during the short program to post a personal best in the free skate, which is his final Olympic appearance. Fellow Team USA skater Jason Brown had a chance at the bronze medal, but he would have had to skate a nearly flawless program to leap-frog Kazakhstan's Denis Ten for third place, and he did not.

Warning: Do not keep reading if you'd like to remain spoiler-free for NBC's primetime Winter Olympics broadcast Thursday (Feb. 13), which will feature the men's figure skating short program results.
It was a day of ups and downs for men's figure skating. Beloved Russian skater Yevgeny Plushenko hurt himself in warm-ups and was forced to withdraw from the competition. An hour later, Japanese skater Yuzuru Hanyu became the first skater to ever earn a short program score that tops 100.
The U.S. skaters each had a good day, albeit for very different reasons. Jason Brown skated a clean program and earned a personal best 86 points, good for 6th place and putting him in the mix for the bronze medal, all depending on how the free skate shakes out.
Jeremy Abbott, on the other hand, fell hard during his first jump, crashing against the boards and lying there on the ice for nearly 30 seconds.

The past 10-15 years Chinese cinema got a major overhaul. It used to be a playground for hardcore arthouse directors and poverty porn enthusiasts, with only a few exceptions made for martial arts fare. But nowadays there's a movement of young directors that feel little to no constraint when it comes to genre specifications and overall atmosphere. Hence the release of films like Han Yan's First Time, a sprawling and colorful romance. Apart from the setting, First Time could've been a Taiwanese film. It borrows a lot from recent efforts (Tom Lin's Starry Starry Night or Juliets, to name just two) and it emits a very similar vibe. Not too serious, not too sentimental, while still harboring a lot of heart and warmth. The characters...

“First Time” is a Chinese youth romance offering and a remake of the 2003 Korean film “…ing”, helmed by Han Yan, whose part of the 2008 collection “Winds of September” ended up being refused release by the Chinese censors. The director is definitely on much safer ground here, teaming with noted producer William Kong (“Secret”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) and popular young stars actress model Angelababy (“Love in Space”) and Taiwanese actor Mark Chao (“Love”). The great-looking and surprisingly complicated film also has an eclectic supporting cast, including Jiang Shan, Tian Yuan (“Butterfly”) and Bai Baihe (“Love is Not Blind”), with American-Taiwanese singer and songwriter Cindy Yen making her big screen debut, and Mark Chao’s own real-life father, Allen Chao putting in an appearance. The film has a cassette tape style structure, Side A beginning by following Angelababy as Shiqiao, a college student with a terminal disease that means she can’t do anything too strenuous.
