In the grand tradition of Star Trek, in whose warp cloud the show openly sails, The Orville: New Horizons served up a conversion therapy allegory in Topa (Imani Pullum), the young Maclan, who decides to live as a woman – reversing the surgery performed on her at birth by a society that insists on presenting as male.

Apple Original Films has revealed the trailer for the highly anticipated film ‘Emancipation.’
Directed and executive produced by Antoine Fuqua and starring and produced by Will Smith.
The film tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom.
The film is inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter,” taken during a Union Army medical examination, that first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” which shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers, ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.
Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor, Mustafa Shakir, Steven Ogg, Grant Harvey, Ronnie Gene Bivens, Jayson Warner Smith, Jabbar Lewis, Michael Luwoye, Aaron Moten and Imani Pullum also star.

The first trailer for Antoine Fuqua and Apple TV+'s unsettling slavery drama "Emancipation" is finally here. Based on the true story of a widely-photographed slave nicknamed "Whipped Peter," Will Smith takes center stage as an escaped slave that becomes a crucial part of the abolitionist movement. Be warned that the new trailer does have some graphic imagery, so we would like to extend caution before watching it. However, the sweeping cinematography, epic fights, and powerful performances seen throughout tease a film that could secure Smith his fourth Oscars nomination and perhaps his second win.
The topic of slavery on film is a difficult and nuanced one, and it's important to understand all perspectives on it. After all, it's no secret that the history of Black pain on screen is one filled with exploitation. However, in a new interview with Variety Fair, Fuqua argued that the story of Peter, as...

The project is from Sony Pictures and has a script by Richard Wenk. Todd Black of Escape Artists, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch produce alongside Washington and Fuqua.
Everyone is keeping the plot of The Equalizer 3 under wraps, though we know it will feature the return of Washington’s Robert McCall. Apple Original Films is hoping that by December 2, 2022 moviegoers are going to be willing to take in a new film starring Will Smith. Emancipation, directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), stars the disgraced actor and marks his first major film project to be released following the slap heard around the world.
For those who need a refresher, Will Smith reacted with violence during the 2022 Oscars after Chris Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith walked on stage and slapped Rock, and then warned him to keep Jada’s name out of his mouth. Emancipation trailer: Will Smith leads a stirring look at Antoine Fuqua’s historical escape thriller
Apple Original Films is bringing major updates for Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming historical drama this Monday with an Emancipation trailer and word of the film’s theatrical release. The emotional epic starring Will Smith is opening in theaters on December 2, followed by a December 9 release on Apple TV+.
Industry insiders are watching Emancipation closely after an incident involving Smith at the last Academy Awards. Smith slapped Chris Rock‘s face on live television after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s partner, Jada-Pinkett Smith. “The slap heard around the world” damaged Smith’s reputation and banned him from the Academy for ten years. Smith also resigned from the Academy to minimize the damage done. Despite the steps taken, Smith’s fall from grace hurt Emancipation‘s status as an Oscar contender. It isn’t easy to champion a film whose star cannot participate in the annual celebration.

In adding the subtitle “New Horizons,” Hulu and the show’s creators were letting audiences know exactly what the third season was going to entail, both on camera and behind the scenes. Yes, the budget has been inflated and Disney-fied. Yes, costumes and set pieces have become more detailed and elaborate. Yet at the core of the show, The Orville has still played to its strengths: its characters.
With the emergence of these “New Horizons” came an influx of new cast members, most notable among them being Topa, played by Imani Pullum. The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Episode 8
When Den of Geek spoke to the creative team of The Orville: New Horizons, director Jon Cassar, and executive-producers David A. Goodman and Brannon Braga spoke of how many of the episodes in this third season felt like making small films. There is no doubt “Midnight Blue” is the ultimate example of that creative approach.
This third season has far surpassed the outreach of the previous two outings of The Orville in terms of scope, scale, and more importantly: social commentary. Only three episodes ago, in “A Tale of Two Topas”, the show dealt with an immensely important and topical issue when Topa (Imani Pullum), felt unhappy in their existence. While Topa had the support of one of her fathers, Bortus (Peter Macon), they truly only found themselves when they transitioned to female and once again claimed who she is.

This The Orville: New Horizons review contains spoilers.
The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Episode 5
Orville fans this season have frequently discussed how much the show has departed from its original comedic roots, and that may be half true. No longer can The Orville be considered almost parody-like in its humor and no longer do audiences get the trademark Seth MacFarlane jokes at random times. But that does not mean the show has completely forgotten where it came from. Captain Mercer (MacFarlane) has seemingly grown – he’s no longer occasionally awkward when the situation calls for diplomacy – and that character perfectly embodies the show’s growth.
Half way through its “rebirth”, The Orville: New Horizons has repeatedly shown just how “new” their approach to storytelling is going to be this season. Mercer, and indeed MacFarlane himself, seem to have evolved, and with it, this newly, more dramatic Orville has really found...
