Macklemore has released a new song, praising pro-Palestinian college protesters and calling out President Biden amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
The single is titled “Hind’s Hall” after the name given to Hamilton Hall by Columbia University students who occupied the building in protest. Hind was a 6-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed while fleeing heavy fighting in Gaza City with her family. She had pleaded for help with first responders after her family died but Hind herself died while waiting for help.
In the track, Macklemore says the problem “isn’t the protests, it’s what they’re protesting.” He voices his support for the protesters, urging them to “block the barricade until Palestine is free.”
“If students in tents posted on the lawn occupyin’ the quad is really against the law and a reason to call in the police and their squad, where does genocide land in your definition,...

Macklemore has released a scathing protest track supporting pro-Palestinian protesters at college campuses across the country, calling for an end to Israel’s war in Gaza, and even sneaking in a Drake diss as well.

Tom Morello is a big fan of Macklemore’s new protest song for Palestine, “Hinds Hall.”
Taking to Twitter, the guitarist wrote, “Honestly @macklemore’s ‘Hind’s Hall’ is the most Rage Against The Machine song since Rage Against The Machine.” Considering Rage Against the Machine hasn’t released any new music for almost 24 years, that’s quite an endorsement from the band’s guitarist.
The song, which Macklemore dropped on his social profiles on Monday, rails against many themes that Rage Against the Machine have oft sung about: it condemns police disrupting peaceful protests on college campus, explains why students are protesting the United States’ role in the conflict, expresses dismay over the willingness for people to criticize the students for sitting in tents on campus (and not Israeli forces who have bombed and destroyed all remaining universities in Gaza), and overall, expresses solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Actor Mark Ruffalo is known for his humanitarian works, and is also one of the celebrities asking for a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Gaza conflict. In the initial days, few Hollywood celebrities signed a petition asking to end the war that was taking place in Palestine, and Ruffalo was one of them. The Artists4Ceasefire group, as they called themselves, asked in an open letter for the conflict to end, and for women and children to live in peace.

Madonna and Cyndi Lauper are two 1980s divas who will always be associated with one another. Around the same time, they made some of the most famous dance songs ever, revolutionized the music video as an art form, and became major LGBTQ icons. Notably, one of Madonna’s biggest songs was initially meant for Lauper. Here’s a look at how the Queen of Pop came to record one of her hits.
A pair of songwriters wrote Madonna’s ‘Open Your Heart’ for Cyndi Lauper
Madonna’s “Open Your Heart” is one of her most famous dance-pop tunes. According to Stereogum, Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson penned the original version of “Open Your Heart” for Lauper. Originally, “Open Your Heart” was going to be a synth-rock song. Considering Lauper has a background in that style of music, having been a member of the band Blue Angel, the song might have worked for her.

More than 2,800 Palestinian civilians have now tragically been killed by Israeli airstrikes, and there’s an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza strip.
The “Thrift Shop” rapper shared his thoughts on the conflict in a Friday (October 20) Instagram post.
Keep reading to find out what he said…
“I have been in fear,” Macklemore wrote. “I have felt a literal lump in my throat and I cannot stay silent any longer. I condemn the murder of any human. The bombings, kidnappings and murder of the Israeli people carried out by Hamas was horrific in every way imaginable. For the first time in 75 years, one of golf’s four major tournaments has returned to the city of Los Angeles.
The United States Open championship, now in its 123rd year, is taking place on the Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course for the very first time (also making it the first time a major championship has been held at the club in general). This lack of major championship presence at the 126-year-old course – some 325 acres in the middle of Beverly Hills — is largely by design; infamous for its discriminatory exclusivity (the club had no Jewish members until 1977, and the first Black member was admitted in 1991), the club has opened its gates to the public to host the Los Angeles Open four times (most recently in 1940) and the 2017 Walker Cup.

New York, June 3 (Ians) Covid-19 not only affected health to a greater extent globally but also hampered relationships among married couples amid lockdowns and limited social interactions, a study has revealed.
The study by researchers at University of California-Los Angeles, published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, is the first to examine the pandemic-related loss of connections with family, friends and colleagues among diverse couples recruited from lower-income neighbourhoods.
Following the lockdowns and restrictions on public gatherings in the early days of Covid-19, the social networks of white, Black and Latino couples all shrank.
But these networks shrank most significantly among lower-income and Latino and Black couples and didn’t fully recover even after vaccines became available and the most severe restrictions were lifted.

[This story contains spoilers from the season finale of Dave, “Looking for Love.”]
Dave’s guest star roster now includes Brad Pitt.
The movie star guested on the FX comedy’s season three finale as a version of himself opposite creator/star Dave Burd. Pitt, who filmed over several days, many of them night shoots, has considerably more than just a cameo. In fact, FX is submitting him for an Emmy in the guest actor category.
Pitt’s appearance, which has been shrouded in secrecy for many months, began with a passionate, personal letter from Burd to Pitt. In an interview earlier this year, showrunner Jeff Schaffer admits that he and his fellow producers wrote it off as another one of Burd’s crazy pipe dreams. “None of us thought it was going to work, except Dave,” he said, suggesting that it was yet another reminder that Burd and his lofty ideas and declarations should not be dismissed. Across his two blockbuster albums, Jack Harlow had all the elements of pop-rap superstardom on full display — the chameleonic swagger, the everydude sincerity evidenced by his affinity for namechecking chain restaurants, the puppydog hearththrob confessions, and the phone numbers of the most famous guest rappers in existence. He had enough skills to get the co-sign from Kanye West and Drake, and the pop acumen to land a Number One Billboard single. However, if you could level one criticism of the Jack Harlow catalog, it is that, conceptually, he could occasionally be a juicy Kentucky nothingburger.

Macklemore has always been kind of a lot. The histrionic hooks, middlebrow exegeses about white privilege, the double- and triple-time bars, even the damn haircut: He is the only popular rapper with the panting, sweaty air of a Broadway showman, almost pathologically eager to please. History will never forget him as the guy who won a Grammy and then apologized to the guy who should’ve won that Grammy, and then posted that apology on Instagram. Given how over-the-top the general Macklemore experience has been, the notion that the rapper’s new comeback LP,...

Apparently, Macklemore's artistic vision runs in the family. Ahead of the release of his junior album, "Ben," on March 3, the "Thrift Shop" rapper asked his 7-year-old daughter Sloane Ava Simone Haggerty to collaborate with him on the upcoming music video for his song "No Bad Days." "This one is gonna be special… Directed by Sloane," the proud dad captioned an Instagram video of their adorable father-daughter moment alongside a red heart emoji on Feb. 20.
"I love your visual aesthetic. I absolutely love your style."
"I'm a little bit nervous asking you this, if I'm being honest," Macklemore said in the video, adding that he was impressed with her recent "producing" work. He continued, "You knew exactly what you wanted. I was so impressed with your work ethic; with your eye. I love your visual aesthetic. I absolutely love your style.

Enough time has passed since the Grammys to start talking about next year’s ceremony. However, before delving deep into who could possibly be an early front-runner and whatnot, let’s address how the recording academy should handle everything Grammy-related. Here are four decisions and changes I’d like to see for the 2024 ceremony.
SEEBillboard Hot 100: Every #1 song of 2023
Keep Album of the Year for last
A positive aspect of this year’s Grammys was the focalization of Album of the Year as the last and most important award. In some previous years the academy has put the spotlight on Record of the Year, even doing small interviews with the nominees for the 2021 show. However, any Grammy enthusiast will tell you that Album of the Year is by far the most coveted award and therefore should be the last presented. This year not only was the award the very last of the night,...

Macklemore is opening up about his 2020 relapse. In an interview for The Kelly Clarkson Show, the rapper opened up about the “intense time,” and how it became a “catalyst for art” in his upcoming album, Ben.
“I’m used to a certain schedule of touring, of being gone, of being home, of recovery and being able to go to a physical 12-step meeting. That stopped during Covid. Eventually, I’m on Instagram while being on Zoom and I’m just not really paying attention to the meetings,” he said. “Eventually,...

The 2023 Grammy Awards are around the corner following a massive year for music in 2022. The Best Rap Album category contains some strong contenders this year, from Kendrick Lamar and Future to Jack Harlow and Pusha T.

DJ Khaled released his thirteenth studio album God Did in August 2022. The album contained an all-star list of featured artists, with appearances from the likes of Drake, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend, Kanye West, Eminem, Future, 21 Savage, Quavo, Takeoff, Sza, Latto, Travis Scott, the City Girls, and the late Juice Wrld. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, while the album’s lead single “Staying Alive,” a Drake and Lil Baby collab interpolating the Bee Gees’ hit song of the same name, reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, and Dua Lipa all have one thing in common: they’re winners of the Grammy for Best New Artist. In most of those cases their wins were fairly predictable, feeling like the culmination of a massive year rather than the start of a new era for the artists. This is true for many — dare I say, most — Best New Artist winners of the past decade or so. Chance the Rapper, Sam Smith, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis all coasted easily to their wins, and even the less obvious picks like Bon Iver and Alessia Cara were still predicted by many Grammy watchers. Perhaps the last truly shocking Best New Artist was Esperanza Spalding, who took the award in 2011. And now, 12 years later, we might be in for a similar event.

Macklemore pays tribute to his less-than-savory childhood idols on his new song, “Heroes,” featuring DJ Premier.
The track boasts throwback boom-bap production from Budo, with Premier crafting a hook out of his signature scratching and chopped-up samples. Over his two verses, Macklemore puffs his chest as he recounts his childhood fascination with gangsters, rappers, and petty crooks of all kinds. The most self-aware part comes when he nods to his present-day status as a dad, comparing viewings of Frozen with his kids to his childhood viewings of Menace II Society:...

It's odd to talk about parodies of Harry Potter when J.K. Rowling has become a satire of herself. Her relentless retconning of the Harry Potter franchise has arguably led her to writing three "Fantastic Beasts" movies that achieve little other than trying to justify her public statements about Dumbledore's sexual orientation. We've covered before how desperately the franchise needs to move on without her, so I won't relitigate that.
Even without Rowling's contribution, Harry Potter has been among the most parodied book franchises, at least as measured by the number of posts on fanfiction.net and the lasting quotability among Millennials of Harry Potter Puppet Pals: The Mysterious Ticking Noise, among other things. For Weird Al Yankovic, who had already poked fun at pop culture behemoths like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Spider-Man, a saturated media landscape was not going to stop him from having his own say on Harry Potter.

Eb Research Partnership (Ebrp) has rallied a slew of stars to appear during the third annual Venture Into Cures, an online fundraiser scheduled for Nov. 20.
The event will feature appearances by (in alphabetical order) Jonathan Brown, Dana Carvey, Billie Eilish, Will Ferrell, Finneas, Jack Harlow, Tom Holland, Joe Jonas, Kermit the Frog, Macklemore, Lamorne Morris, Chris Pratt, Keanu Reeves, Olivia Rodrigo, Molly Shannon, Hannah Simone, David Spade, Emma Watson, Venus Williams and more, with performances by Broken Social Scene, John Legend, Joy Oladokun, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lauren Spencer-Smith and others.

The Grammys have a checkered relationship with rap, from not airing their major rap categories on the official Grammy telecast to infamous snubs like Macklemore over Kendrick and confusion over the actual parameters of rap that came to a head this fall with Nicki Minaj and Latto. There were fewer glaring mistakes in this year’s nominations, especially with Drake’s boycott freeing up slots. However, a few head-scratching decisions highlight how far The Grammys are from getting it right.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance album almost never made it to the dance floor — at the Grammys.
Beyoncé submitted the critically acclaimed album for best dance/electronica album at the 2023 Grammys, but the Recording Academy’s dance committee initially felt that it might not be a perfect fit for the genre, according to a source. That group believed that the album might be better placed in pop, where it would be nominated for best pop vocal album alongside projects by Adele, Harry Styles, Lizzo and more.
The debate landed in the hands of the academy’s National Screening Committee — a group of music industry experts including songwriters, producers, musicologists and more — who listened to Renaissance several times to determine where it should compete. That group — which also selects which artists are eligible for best new artist — eventually decided that Beyoncé’s project should be in contention in dance.

In the past 10 years few albums have received the praise that Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” did. Being the Edm duo’s last album before their split in 2021, the record has been cited as one of the defining albums of the 2010s due to its cultural impact as well as its critical and commercial success. All of that success translated into love at the Grammys: Daft Punk took home five awards including Album of the Year.
Daft Punk had never been huge Grammy favorites. Prior to their 2014 sweep for “Random Access Memories,” they had only won two Grammys: Best Dance/Electronic Album for “Alive 2007” and Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Alive 2007),” both in 2009. But over the years the band had racked up a huge following and, most importantly, a lot of industry respect.

Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” Kicked Out of Grammy Rap Category, Will Compete in Pop (Exclusive)
Click here to read the full article.
Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” is spending its eighth week on top of Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart, but at the Grammys, the song will compete in the pop category.
Minaj originally submitted the track — which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in August — to the rap categories at the Grammys, but the decision was overturned by the Recording Academy’s rap committee, according to a source. That group determined that Minaj’s playful and pop-sounding song sampling Rick James’ 1981 classic “Super Freak” should compete for best pop solo performance instead of rap awards.
Minaj criticized the decision on social media Thursday in an Instagram video post and a series of tweets. “They stay moving the goalposts when it comes to me,” Minaj said on Ig about the academy. “Why is the goalpost only ever moved when it’s Nicki?...

It’s well known that the Grammys have a history of snubbing hip-hop music. Whether the reason is racial or musical bias, generational disconnect with older voters, or a mixture of both, the fact is that it’s harder for hip-hop artists to win in the big categories. And if it is still an issue now, you can imagine how hard it used to be a few decades ago. Knowing all of that makes a certain win truly stand out in Grammy history. At the 1993 awards, hip-hop collective Arrested Development won Best New Artist, becoming the first hip-hop act to win the award, and the first hip-hop act to win in the general field. Let’s look back at the historic win, the factors that contributed to it, and the impact it had in Grammy and pop culture history.

In the years since TikTok launched internationally in 2017, it has solidified itself as the biggest social media platform among Gen Z - a status that was no doubt expedited by months upon months of young people being cooped up in their houses with little to do other than scroll through the app amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The app has become beloved by Gen Z and millennial music fans for its unique ability to expose us to new artists and grow musicians' platforms in a way that feels both authentic and trendy - or, at least, that's how it started.

The video for Macklemore’s new single “Chant” begins with the rapper rising out of a misty lake and directly addressing his deepest insecurities. “They told me that I vanished,” he raps in his opening lines. “They told me that I had it/They told me that I’m gone…They can’t take my talent/They can’t take my stripes.”
This might be a surprising sentiment for an artist who’s racked up billions of streams over the past decade, headlined huge concerts all across the globe, and won major awards.

Highlights from the evening included Oklahoma K-pop artist AleXa who performed an energetic version of her song "Wonderland," former The Voice winner Jordan Smith who represented Kentucky with his song "Sparrow" and...

The Grammy for Best New Artist can be a double-edged sword. The award has been associated with a certain “curse” where winners in the category tend to fade away from the public consciousness rather quickly, especially in comparison to their fellow nominees. With a recent coronation of yet another Best New Artist, Olivia Rodrigo, I think it’s time to truly reevaluate whether the award is really a kiss of death. Let’s specifically take a look at the 2010s and onward.
A couple of winners fall into the “genre favorite” category, where the winning artist didn’t become a huge crossover star but still enjoys success in their particular field. For example, the 2010s opened with a win for country group Zac Brown Band. A lot of people mark their win with an asterisk, since that year’s breakout superstar, Lady Gaga, was deemed ineligible due to a Grammy...
