In the ever-evolving landscape of science fiction, Dark Matter, based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel, emerges as an ambitious yet convoluted series. This Apple TV+ adaptation relies heavily on its talented cast, particularly Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, to keep it from unraveling under the weight of its intricate plot. The series explores what happens when physicist Jason Dessen, portrayed by Edgerton, is abducted into an alternate reality where his life took a different path. This premise provides a fertile ground for examining the concept of parallel worlds, a staple in recent sci-fi narratives. Edgerton deftly navigates his dual roles,

Who is Max in Apple TV's Sci-Fi series Dark Matter? Although the series centers on Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton) and his alternate-universe counterpart, the secret revealed in episodes 3 and 4 might change that – and raise the stakes considerably.
Episode 3, titled The Box, reveals the existence of a mysterious child, previously unmentioned in the series. This deviates from the series' source material, Blake Crouch's 2016 best-selling novel of the same name, and has led to some out-there theories. Here's what makes Max's existence crucial in Dark Matter.

The multiverse just got a little more complicated on Dark Matter.
In Apple TV+’s limited series, which is based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, physics professor Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) is pulled into an alternate version of his life by a stranger. In this universe, he chose his science career over his pregnant girlfriend Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), they never got married, and she terminated her pregnancy, meaning that their son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) was never born. The kicker? Jason’s abductor is an alternate universe version of himself, who’s now taken over his life with Daniela and Charlie.

Following its critically acclaimed first season, AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire” is back for round two, and the Gothic drama based on Anne Rice’s beloved novels remains one of TV’s best and brightest despite the inherent darkness within.
The new season (premiering Sunday at 9/8c on AMC and AMC+) picks up in the aftermath of the jaw-dropping reveal that closed out the show’s freshman outing: Louis’ (Jacob Anderson) loyal assistant Rashid is actually his vampire lover, Armand (Assad Zaman). Once again the show makes excellent use of its unique interview framing to jump between multiple timelines as Louis weaves a complicated tale for journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), one that explores his relationships with both Armand and Claudia, beginning with their adventures in Paris in the 1940s.

And I truly think that the world is a much better place that I’m not Star-Lord, even if I had the opportunity or I did a good enough audition because it is the way it’s meant to be.”

Both broadly and specifically, “Dark Matter” is a TV series made with me in mind — or, at the very least, a version of me that could exist. Speaking generally, the Apple drama asks big questions about how the choices we make come to define who we are: Would I be different today if I had pursued a different career, married a different woman, or raised a different family? In small ways — the stuff of daydreams — the answer is, “Yes, of course, I’d be different.” In a different job, I wouldn’t be writing these words right now because I’d be napping in a hammock off the coast of Ireland, as a professional hammock tester specializing in cold weather climates. But aside from changes in what I’d be doing, what about who I am? Would a new profession, or a new partner, or a new home-life alter my personality?...

Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" best handled the topic of choice.
Dark Matter Season 1 Episode 1 and Dark Matter Season 1 Episode 2 are the latest on this topic.
Duplicate characters existing in separate dimensions is hardly a novel concept on television (or almost any creative medium).
The first such episode featuring a parallel universe was, no shock, on the 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone, "The Parallel." An astronaut returns from a lengthy journey to find his world not quite the same as he remembers it.
Another early example came in 1970 on the soap opera Dark Shadows. Vampire Barnabas Collins found a room in his mansion, Collinwood, a portal he used to escape to parallel time.
This concept was most vital in the 1967 Star Trek episode "Mirror, Mirror." It was set in a dimension where evil twins of the Star Trek characters lived.
This mirror universe was revisited on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine...

The best-selling science fiction novel Dark Matter by Blake Crouch has been adapted into an Apple TV+ original series, bolstered by an all-star cast. With Crouch himself staying on as the showrunner and executive producer, Dark Matter unfolds at a brisk pace that leans more into the thriller elements of the source material than the science fiction premise. And while many of the familiar stylistic and thematic tropes in a number of Apple TV+ original thrillers are on display, the performance by the series’ leads elevates the material and helps make Dark Matter stand distinct from its contemporaries on the platform.

Two roads diverged when one man — scientist Jason Desson (played by Joel Edgerton) — chose to start a family instead of pursuing his professional research in quantum mechanics. Apple TV+‘s Dark Matter, an adrenaline-pumping, thought-provoking, nine-episode sci-fi thriller based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 bestselling novel, explores the resulting alternative lives Jason has, based on that decision he made so many years earlier. While “Jason 1,” a comfortable family man, works as a physics professor for a lower-tier Chicago community college and happily resides with ex-artist wife Daniela (Snowpiercer’s Jennifer Connelly) and their teenaged son Charlie (Oakes Fegley), “Jason 2” reaches incredible career heights, wins the most prestigious scientific awards — and builds a dimension-hopping metal box. Jason 2 then uses that box to abduct Jason 1, sending his unsuspecting alter-ego into that lonely, but successful life, so that Jason 2 may infiltrate the family he never got to have. “That tension between the family life and the work life,...

Have you ever watched It’s a Wonderful Life and wished that Frank Capra had paused to show us Clarence the Angel explaining to George Bailey how he was able to present him with the experience of a world in which he was never born?
Chances are good you haven’t — that you appreciate that the surest way to ruin whimsy is to “But actually…” it.
But if you have, indeed, yearned for a version of It’s a Wonderful Life in which “magic” was replaced by a literal black box and “joy and sadness and general wonderment” by “dejection and self-seriousness and general washed-out solemnity,” Apple TV+’s adaptation of Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter may be in your wheelhouse. It’s a series that doesn’t lack for ingenuity and, especially in the last two hours, ideas pop up that border on inspired, but the lack of tonal variation ultimately dooms Dark Matter.

The Multiverse is undeniably dominating the world of pop-culture. With Everything Everywhere All At Once sweeping the Oscars in 2023, Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing fan favorite web-slingers back to the big-screen and The Flash… well, perhaps it’s better not to talk about that one. Audiences fascination with the multi-verse has slowed down in 2024. Deadpool and Wolverine is set to “save the MCU” by bringing the Merc with a Mouth into the biggest cinematic universe in history and teaming him up with Hugh Jackman’s highly celebrated Wolverine; however, the multi-verse isn’t exclusive to superhero levels of extravagance.
Dark Matter uses the endless possibilities of parallel universes for deeper exploration. The new series, adapted from the 2016 novel written by Blake Crouch — who also acts as an executive producer and writer here — utilizes the sliding doors theory to tackle elements of love and regret.

In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.

You know the old adage: you wait ages for an Apple sci-fi show about quantum superposition, and then two come along at once. Just a month after we unravelled the existential mysteries of Constellation, we now have another reality-bending rabbit hole to disappear down in this series by Blake Crouch, adapted from his 2016 novel. But where Constellation took a deliberate, almost meditative approach to blending parallel worlds, confuzzling audiences right up until its slow-burn reveal, Dark Matter is a more up-front affair, wearing its fluctuating quantum state proudly on its five-dimensional sleeve.
Edgerton’s Jason Dessen lives a simple but happy life with wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). Working as a college physics teacher, he’s professionally unfulfilled (though apparently still able to afford a stunning brownstone in downtown Chicago) and vastly overshadowed by former classmate Ryan (Jimmi Simpson). After a night out though,...

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

Feast your eyes on curated footage from the upcoming Apple sci-fi series Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.
In an alternate timeline, maybe you were a carpet fitter. Unless you already are a carpet fitter, in which case, maybe there’s a parallel reality in which you’re popular disc jockey, or a pilot, or perhaps even a spaniel.
Such is the premise – well, apart from the spaniel part – of Dark Matter, the upcoming sci-fi TV series coming soon to Apple TV+. Joel Edgerton stars as a clever scientist type who suddenly ends up in other realities where he’s confronted with alternate versions of himself and paths not travelled.
The series is based on the book of the same name by Blake Crouch, and emerges on the tail end of the multiverse zeitgeist brought about by the likes of Everything Everywhere All At Once and assorted Marvel films.

This year’s Oscars were as much a celebration of books as they were cinema. Five of the 10 best picture nominees were based on books, and three of those – “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest” – took home the most statues overall. Even the winner for best animated picture, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” was loosely inspired by a 1937 novel Miyazaki had read as a child.

In 2015, Fox debuted a science-fiction mystery series called "Wayward Pines" starring Matt Dillon as U.S. Secret Service agent Ethan Burke who is sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of two fellow agents in a small town in Idaho. After getting in a car accident, he awakens to discover he cannot leave Wayward Pines, nor can he contact anyone outside of the town. He quickly learns that one of the missing agents is dead, while the other, his ex-partner Kate (Carla Gugino) has simply settled down and started a new life in the town.
If that wasn't odd enough, Wayward Pines is boxed in by an electric fence and run by Sheriff Arnold Pope (Terrence Howard), who punishes any attempts to flee the city with a public execution known as a "reckoning." If this sounds like David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" by way of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," you're not far off.

Seemingly freed from the Marvel machine, Ryan Coogler is set to reunite with Michael B. Jordan on a new project, recently picked up by Warner Bros. THR reports the period thriller will feature the undead, and potentially take place in Jim Crow-era South. While other details are under wraps, there are reports it will feature anime influences and has franchise potential. Production will kick off this April in New Orleans, so expect to learn much more soon.
