The Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it is generally set in the present. There have been flashbacks and side tours (especially in the spinoff TV shows on Disney+), but, starting with "Iron Man," the narrative has only moved forward -- which sets it apart from popular franchises like "Star Wars" and the Harry Potter movies. Regardless of what you think about the current direction of the MCU, this is something of a blessing. There's nothing more stultifying than fill-in-the-gaps storytelling.
Of course, in a universe this expansive, it is tempting to wonder about what came before. The characters have had run-ins with creatures and beings who've existed for eons, but their origin stories are typically related in exposition dumps that stop the movies cold. The films tend to be crammed with incident; slamming on the brakes to explain who...

By Marvel's own estimation, Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the largest yet. It incorporated seven feature films ("Black Widow" through "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever") and eight seasons of television ("WandaVision" through "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law"). All told, there were more screen hours in Phase 4 than in the previous three phases combined. As of this writing, two additional films have been released as part of Phase 5, the central villain from "Quantumania," is to be the franchise's new time-hopping multiverse antagonist.

"She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" holds a pretty unique place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only was it a change of pace by largely serving as a legal drama with a side of superhero shenanigans, but it also got really meta along the way, with Tatiana Maslany's Jennifer Walters breaking the fourth wall a great deal, not unlike Deadpool. That meta part of the narrative hit its apex in the show's finale, which saw Jennifer breaking out of her show directly into Marvel Studios headquarters to have a word with the writers — as well as Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige (sort of).
Jennifer literally helped to rewrite her own ending, with the finale we had seen earlier in the episode erased for something more optimistic. But how does the MCU timeline classify this very meta moment? We have an...

Look, I know things aren't running quite so smoothly over at Marvel Studios. If you're not fully on board with the idea that it's time to sound the death knell for this franchise, well, even the biggest fans would have to admit that the golden goose has lost a bit of its luster recently. To paraphrase the tagline of "The Social Network," one doesn't become the biggest IP on the planet without making a few missteps along the way. Of course, some flaws are more forgivable than others. While we probably won't be letting "Secret Invasion" slide anytime soon, it's much more understandable that Kevin Feige and his cohorts would accidentally cross a few wires while untangling the dense, interconnected timeline(s) of the MCU.
Luckily, the studio is well aware of every obsessive fan's complaints in that regard. In...

What makes a good villain? That's a question that storytellers have been asking themselves for centuries, and the answer is etheric, intangible, because there isn't a one-size-fits-all bad guy for every story. Sometimes you need a villain that is cold, and calculating, and sometimes you need one that is unpredictable in their moves and will fly off the handle if looked at wrong. The point is that a villain has to fit the story they're in, and more importantly, they have to pair well with the heroes.
The saying goes that a hero is only as strong as their villain, which means when Tom Hiddleston took the role of Loki, one of the most interesting big bads ever created in the Marvel comics, he had a lot on his shoulders. He not only had to craft a villain that would work outside of the printed page, he had to create...

Headed our way at the end of the year, the first part of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon promises action-packed sci-fi and a clash between scrappy guerrilla fighters and a tyrannical force looking to stamp its order all over a galaxy. But if you like your Snyder movies more intense, he's ready to deliver on that front too, planning two different cuts of the film; one suitable for audiences the others more for adults.
Talking to Vanity Fair's Anthony Breznican about the films — yes, there are two, more on that in a moment – Snyder explained that one version will be something "that anyone can enjoy and watch," followed by one later that is more mature. "I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them."

Get ready to embark on an intergalactic adventure like no other as Netflix delves into Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon”.
Vanity Fair released an exclusive first-look photo, providing a glimpse into the space saga set to debut on December 22.
Senior Hollywood correspondent Anthony Breznican recently sat down with Snyder, the DC Comics director behind “Man of Steel” and “Justice League”, to dive into the premise of “Rebel Moon”, its unique format, and the inevitable comparisons to the legendary “Star Wars” franchise.
“Rebel Moon” takes viewers on a wild ride through a vast array of worlds with cyborg warriors wielding molten-metal swords, colossal half-humanoid arachnids, and ancient robots that seem plucked from medieval tales rather than the future. The story, a concept Snyder has nurtured for over three decades, centers around a moon orbiting a colossal gas giant at the distant fringes of the galaxy. Inhabited mainly by farmers, this lunar...

“It was a Kafka-esque experience,” said filmmaker Steven Spielberg during an “Academy Conversations” Q&a about his film “The Fabelmans,” his first truly autobiographical film. Watch him, co-writer Tony Kushner, and actors Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Gabriel Labelle, and Judd Hirsch discuss the film with moderator Anthony Breznican for Oscar voters above.
SEERay Richmond: With ‘The Fabelmans,’ Steven Spielberg gives us a rare glimpse inside his soul
“The Fabelmans” is a fictionalized account of Spielberg’s adolescence, his relationships with his family, and his budding love of film. Casting it felt especially surreal “because I was casting this based on people I knew pretty well and that’s what sort of made it difficult.” But it was even harder deciding to make the movie in the first place. “This is my private life. In everything we perform in or write or direct or produce, we leave a little of ourselves behind,...

The battle for the Iron Throne of streaming is about to begin.
Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and HBO’s “House of the Dragon” will be airing simultaneously for six consecutive weeks, which many headlines and social media users have dubbed “the biggest battle in TV history.”
When asked about the competition between the two shows, “Rings of Power” executive producer Lindsey Weber dismissed the idea that these stories are in conflict with each other.
“For us, we don’t feel any of it. It’s totally manufactured by the media for headlines,” Weber said Tuesday night during a “Rings of Power” panel discussion at Film at Lincoln Center. “I’m quite certain that the cast and crew doesn’t feel any of it either. Kevin Feige Confirmed Details of How Steve Rogers’ Captain America Lost His Virginity for ‘She-Hulk’
Click here to read the full article.
Kevin Feige knew exactly when and who Captain America lost his virginity to, according to She-Hulk showrunner Jessica Gao.
In the debut episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, cousins Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) get into an ongoing discussion ripped straight from the MCU fandom: Is Steve Rogers, the first Avenger and now former Captain America, a virgin?
While Jennifer excitedly makes the case that due to his various superhero obligations pre- and post-freeze, he likely did not have time to be intimate with anyone, Bruce initially declines to discuss the private life of his friend and colleague. But with Jennifer wearing him down, a trusted Bruce eventually blurts out, “Steve Rogers is not a virgin. He lost his virginity to a girl in 1943 on the Uso tour.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has been around Hollywood a long time. But she’s still learning. Speaking to Vanity Fair’s Anthony Breznican, she admitted that the 2018 Solo film, about the younger years of the swashbuckling space cowboy Han Solo, taught her a lesson: don’t recast a core role. Kennedy took over Lucasfilm in 2012 with a goal to inject new energy into the Star Wars franchise. Solo was one such attempt, with Alden Ehrenreich in the iconic Han Solo role pioneered by Harrison Ford. The film made less at the box office than any other live-action Star Wars movie. “There should be moments along the way when you learn things,” says Kennedy. “Now it does seem so abundantly clear that we can’t do that.” The success of the slate of Star Wars television series may make it easier to break new ground, as new stars and storylines are introduced.

“Star Wars” is in a fascinating place right now. The franchise, which began in 1977, is now relegated exclusively to streaming. And without a new feature film since Christmas 2019, when the underwhelming “The Rise of Skywalker” closed out the so-called Skywalker saga, the cinematic output is very much in flux.
In an interview with Vanity Fair’s Anthony Breznican published Wednesday, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked how important the move away from the Skywalker saga was for the vitality of the franchise.
“I think it is vital,” Kennedy said about moving beyond the Skywalkers. “Just staying within the construct of George’s storytelling, to keep chipping away at that, I think would be wrong. It’s our job to step away now, but still have a connection to the mythology that George created. That won’t stop. But we are moving on from the Skywalker saga. That’s what’s taking a lot of time,...

The “Transformers” movie franchise will take on the “Beast Wars” storyline from the late 1990s in “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and director Steven Caple Jr. announced on Tuesday.
Production is just starting on the feature, but Di Bonaventura and Caple still did reveal a fair amount about “Rise of the Beasts.” Like Travis Knight’s 2018 film “Bumblebee,” which was set in 1987, the new film will be set in 1994, so as not to intersect with the five Transformers movies directed by Michael Bay.

“Justice League” screenwriter Chris Terrio has called the theatrical version of the superhero movie an “act of vandalism.”
“The 2017 theatrical cut was an act of vandalism,” Terrio told Vanity Fair’s Anthony Breznican in a scathing interview published Thursday. “Zack [Snyder] may be too much of a gentleman to say that, but I’m not.”
Terrio added that after seeing the theatrical version, “I immediately called my lawyer and said, ‘I want to take my name off the film.’ [The lawyer] then called Warner Bros. and told them that I wanted to do that.”
Terrio would eventually stand down on removing his name from the movie. He explained, “It would be an international scandal and news story. So I shut up and I said nothing publicly. I’ve never said anything about ‘Justice League’ since then, but the movie doesn’t represent my work.”

The official trailer for the CBS All access adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand is here!
We can't have in-person Comic Cons, but we can still have nice things.
And on December 17, we'll get to see why Randall Flagg was such a good manipulator.
Ok. I'm going to say it. A hot Randall Flagg makes a lot of sense.
When reading the book, I always imagined Flagg as hideous and scarred. I can't remember the true description, but that was my takeaway.
But it makes a lot more sense for the evil bastard to be the personification of Alexander Skarsgård because it would be easier for a good looking man, no matter how evil, to get attention before revealing his true colors to his followers.

While Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hasn’t exactly been a hit with the critics and has proven divisive among the fans, director J.J. Abrams seems be taking the criticism in stride, explaining at a recent screening that you can’t please everyone, and that even the negative takes are perfectly valid.
After a showing of the Sequel Trilogy finale at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday, Abrams was asked by Vanity Fair’s Anthony Breznican if there was something about the film that the detractors just weren’t getting, to which he responded:
“No, I would say that they’re right. The people who love it more than anything are also right.”
The filmmaker then suggested that he never set out to make a movie that was universally beloved:
“I was asked just seven hours ago in another country, ‘So how do you go about pleasing everyone?...

J.J. Abrams was asked about the criticism of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker during an interview Friday following a screening of the film at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood. The film has received less-than-stellar reviews from critics, as well as intense debate among fans. When asked by Vanity Fair‘s Anthony Breznican if fans aren’t getting something from the final film in the franchise, the director replied “No, I would say that they’re right,” adding “The people who love it more than anything are also right.”
Noting that it’s impossible to please everyone, Abrams said “We knew starting this that any decision we made — a design decision, a musical decision, a narrative decision — would please someone and infuriate someone else,” Abrams said. “And they’re all right.

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” made its long-awaited world premiere in Hollywood last night and critics were left both thrilled and disappointed by the much-touted final entry in the Skywalker saga. “The Rise of Skywalker” finds “The Force Awakens” helmer J.J. Abrams back in the director’s chair following Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi.” The latter film opened in 2017 to vast critical acclaim, but Johnson’s script earned a polarizing response from “Star Wars” fans for the way it upended conventions and side-stepped fan theories. It appears Abrams has course-corrected the franchise with “The Rise of Skywalker” in a way that critics are finding frustrating.
The New York Times carpetbagger Kyle Buchanan respond on Twitter to “The Rise of Skywalker” by writing, “[The film] could only have been ruder to Rian Johnson if they had motion-smoothed it.”
IGN’s deputy entertainment manager Laura Prudom added, “The emotional highs are spectacular,...

Baby Yoda from “The Mandalorian” has captured the hearts of “Star Wars” fans across the country, but no one loves Baby Yoda more than Werner Herzog. The legendary director stars in “The Mandalorian” as The Client, an antagonist figure who has nefarious plans in store for Baby Yoda. In real life, Herzog is obsessed with Baby Yoda. The director is so protective over the show’s signature creature that he put “The Mandalorian” on blast when they considered replacing the Baby Yoda puppet with a CGI version of the character.
Vanity Fair reporter Anthony Breznican writes that at a recent “Mandalorian” screening the series’ co-writer and co-director Dave Filoni revealed that Herzog acted with contempt on set upon the CGI Baby Yoda discovery. After a take using the puppet, the crew got ready for another take without the puppet “in case they decided during postproduction that the puppet wasn’t...

“1917” is audacious cinema executed by masters at the top of their craft, and led by two young British actors who will go far: Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay. “We finished this movie a week ago today,” Sam Mendes told a packed Sunday Academy and guild screening in Los Angeles. The weary director had jetted with his UK team from London to New York for a series of Saturday screenings which ignited the first tweet reactions, followed by Sunday’s equally enthusiastic Los Angeles round.
Mendes dedicates the film to his grandfather Alfred, who served in World War I, and did not speak about it for 50 years, until he shared stories with his grandchildren. One was about a man carrying a message, which formed the germ of Mendes’ first screenplay. He wrote that with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (“Penny Dreadful”) at the behest of his long-time CAA agent Beth Swofford, who told him...

President Trump’s primary campaign promise was to build a “big, beautiful” wall along America’s southern border. Construction has yet to begin nearly two years into his presidency, and with Democrats set to take control of the House of Representatives next month, it doesn’t look like Congress is going to Ok the massive project anytime soon.
The Gop still holds the keys to the government for a few more weeks, though, and Trump is doing all he can to convince lawmakers to set aside $5 billion so that more...

Just a couple of weeks ago, the internet seemed so confident that the all-important first trailer for Avengers 4 would be dropping at some point this month, and as December 1st looms ever-closer, many fans have been clinging to the notion that November 28th would be the day where this long-awaited footage would finally surface.
That date has now arrived, and boy do we have some disappointing news for you, as Anthony Breznican from Entertainment Weekly has offered a seemingly definitive answer on whether the teaser will be dropping today, expressing his blunt ‘no’ in video form:

Star Wars Resistance is the latest animated series to come from the mind of The Clone Wars and Rebels showrunner Dave Filoni. As the title suggests, it’s set prior to the events of The Force Awakens and will follow the Resistance in their fight against the First Order. Though we won’t see the likes of Rey or Finn, fan favorites such as Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron and Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma will return instead.
Not only that, but it seems a bonafide legend of the Star Wars saga will appear as well. Entertainment Weekly’s Anthony Breznican broke the news on Twitter that the one and only General Leia Organa “will be a character” in Resistance, revealing that voice actress Rachel Butera will be stepping into the role made famous by the late, great Carrie Fisher.

Fox News Channel host Laura Ingraham has come under fire for comments she made on The Ingraham Angle on Monday, calling immigration detention centers for children, “essentially summer camps.” Ingraham’s show faced an advertiser boycott in April after she took to Twitter to mock Parkland survivor David Hogg. On the heels of the “summer camps” quip Monday night, some on Twitter were using the hashtag #boycottlaura.
On her program, Ingraham said, “As more illegal immigrants are rushing the border, more kids are being separated from their parents and temporarily housed at what are, essentially, summer camps.” Ingraham added, “The president is doing what we should have been doing all along, prosecuting all border crashers.”

Not to be outdone by Deadpool 2 (see the first reactions here), Lucasfilm has today lifted the official Twitter embargo for Solo: A Star Wars Story, opening the floodgates to a sea of online positivity.
As reported by Cbm, a number of critics have now posted their preliminary thoughts on social media, and the general consensus appears to be that Lucasfilm and Ron Howard’s Anthology pic is an “absolute blast,” one that whisks viewers off on a journey filled with many twists and turns.
In fact, if Peter Sciretta of /Film is to be believed, Solo‘s story is chock full of unexpected events, so be wary of Marvel-level spoilers over the next two weeks. Other critics are more reserved in their reviews, stating that the Star Wars origin story takes a little while to find its feet, but once it does, Alden Ehrenreich owns the titular role,...

Marvel has finally unveiled “Avengers: Infinity War” for the press, and the first reactions are overwhelmingly positive. Film critics call the Marvel tentpole “thrilling” and “an astonishing experience,” with IndieWire’s own Jamie Righetti raving that it’s “everything you go to the movies for: Action, romance, humor, heartbreak, it has it all.” The film’s ending, in particular, is eliciting major shock from the press, with everyone adamant that fans avoid all spoilers at every cost.

The first batch of media have seen Marvel's Black Panther, and they absolutely love it. Almost universally, all critics are praising Black Panther for its refreshing spin on the hero genre, the performance of Michael B. Jordan, and lots of other stuff. Take a look at some of the reactions from notable folks around the web:
Ryan Coogler knocked it out of the park, some great sequences presented in a “single take/shot.” If this movie isn’t nominated for costume, art and production design awards next year, I would be seriously shocked. #blackpanther
