Seven months into her tenure as YouTube‘s Chief Product Officer, Johanna Voolich is updating viewers about some new and upcoming features. In the first episode of the new series Release Notes, Voolich sat down with YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie for a conversation that explored YouTube CEO Neal Mohan‘s current objectives.
Release Notes is available on the Creator Insider channel, which YouTube uses to update its community about the latest changes to its platform. Insights from the show can also be found in text form via a blog post attributed to Ritchie.
The new series is a bit different from typical Creator Insider uploads. Through a combination of discussion prompts, questions from creators, and references to Mohan’s open letter from the beginning of the year, Voolich and Ritchie attempt to explain how YouTube makes its decisions — and how those choices impact creators big and small. Though YouTube has changed considerably over the past decade, its top categories have remained somewhat consistent. Games, kid-friendly content, and comedy are still major draws on Google’s video platform.

There were only 12 channels in this week’s U.S. Top 50 that saw their YouTube viewership decline week-over-week, but four of those channels still wound up in the top five.
Thanks to those traffic dips, the gap between this ranking’s upper echelon and the rest of the field is thinning. The #1 channel, which is far ahead of the other contenders, didn’t seem to get that memo.

Rainbow Friends Fans earned a second straight #1 finish in the U.S. Top 50. Like a lot of the channels in this chart, the leading Shorts hub gets many of its views from young YouTube users who are into gaming.

Forbes Magazine honored transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney by including her on its “30 Under 30 Social Media” list for being one of the most influential social media users in the world.
Mulvaney was listed alongside 29 other social media personalities who have shaped the “creator economy,” a “$250 billion industry estimated to roughly double over the next five years.”
She has used her TikTok platform to document her gender transition and struggles with the backlash that resulted from Bud Light making her a spokesperson last year.
“Our callout, Dylan Mulvaney, 26, is a creator, actress and LGBTQ+ activist who gained virality with her ‘Days of Girlhood’ series that documented her gender transition,” Forbes wrote, noting that the series “drew more than one billion views.”
Others on the “30 Under 30 Social Media” list include Alix Earle, Molly Burke, Alan Chikin Chow and Steven He.

Toys and Colors is a self-explanatory channel. It’s a destination for bright, fun-loving videos that celebrate the power of play. It’s also, as of this week, the most-watched YouTube channel of the moment.

To qualify for this week’s U.S. Top 50, YouTube channels needed to meet two benchmarks: They needed to be based in the United States, and they needed to get at least 98 million views over seven days.

During the fall 2022 semester, more than 250 people applied to join the University of Southern California‘s content creator incubator club, USC Reach.
