Caitlin Clark continues to be a huge box office draw: The women’s college basketball phenom drove this year’s WNBA draft to record ratings for ESPN, with Clark getting drafted first overall by the Indiana Fever.
Monday’s draft coverage drew 2.45 million viewers, according to Sportico, which quadruples (!) the previous viewership high, set in 2004 when Diana Taurasi going first overall to the Phoenix Mercury drew 601,000 total viewers. This year, Clark went first overall, with South Carolina center Kamilla Cardoso going third to the Chicago Sky, who also picked up Lsu’s Angel Reese with the seventh overall pick.

There comes a moment in many sports documentaries when viewers find themselves wondering whether they’ve drunk the Gatorade. All the fast cuts and swelling music, the bodily injuries and emotional agony, the triumphant moments and podium tears have a way of pushing our buttons.
In director Sarah Dowland’s “Sue Bird: In the Clutch,” that objectivity-questioning pause comes when the WNBA legend’s agent appears for an on-camera interview (she happens to be one of its executive producers as well). No arguing that agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas knows a great deal about Bird and even more about the changes in marketing strategies that women athletes have faced over the years. She also knows that optics matter, and it’s hard not to be a little frustrated that such an obviously biased cheerleader should appear as a source. (Another red flag: NBA Entertainment had a role in producing the doc.

Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi are taking their show to the NBA.
The two WNBA stalwarts will host their first NBA game together on ESPN, bringing back a programming concept that has proven popular during the network’s coverage of the NCAA women’s final four tournament. “The Bird & Taurasi Show,” seen six times over the course of 2022 and 2023, has gained notice for the duo’s rapport and rogue energy. The program will be produced in conjunction with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, which is the backer of the so-called “Manning-cast” that airs alongside ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”
The pair will call a noon game on Christmas between the Milwaukee Bucks and New York Knicks and can be seen on ESPN2 and ESPN+. Scheduled guests include Jason Sudeikis, Tyrese Haliburton and Breanna Stewart.

Theatergoers who attended “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” the concert film that has already amassed $231 million worldwide, were treated to a special trailer for “The Marvels,” the upcoming Marvel Studios superhero extravaganza — cut specifically for the “Eras Tour” audience.
They also probably walked by a poster for “The Marvels” — with stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani proudly beaming — since theaters were encouraged to place marketing materials for the movie in front of auditoriums playing “The Eras Tour.”
It was all part of a coordinated effort by Disney to further fuel the female-led moviegoing momentum that started with the summer blockbuster “Barbie” and continued with “Eras” last month. But leaping onto that same speeding train may be an insurmountable goal, even for Captain Marvel.

With the NBA still on the outs with China and Nike hit with Chinese backlash over Xinjiang, it might seem that “Space Jam: A New Legacy” has two serious fouls against its chances of entering the world’s largest film market.
But signs indicate that Beijing may uniquely embrace the “Space Jam” star LeBron James in a way that could actually give the film an assist, despite China’s ongoing spat with the league and James’ lifetime Nike deal.
The Malcolm D. Lee-directed film debuted in U.S. cinemas and on HBO Max on July 16. If it ever releases, it will hit China at least a month later, significantly depressing returns.
The NBA’s China troubles date back to 2019 when Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, infuriating Beijing and leading state broadcaster CCTV to banish the league from its airwaves.

Just call him The King of the box office.
LeBron James, citing Anthony D’Alessandro’s Deadline story touting the box office success of his new film, Space Jam: A New Legacy, had a simple message for those who didn’t believe the film would do well: “Hi Haters!” It was accented with a grinning emoji.
The film is poised end the weekend at No. 1 at the box office, its $32 million opening, beating out the Marvel film Black Widow.
James’s film is the sequel to 1996’s Michael Jordan-led Space Jam and is also available on HBO Max.
Also appearing in the sequel are NBA stars Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Nneka Ogwumike, Diana Taurasi and Klay Thompson.

It took 25 years, but Space Jam is finally getting a sequel, while Escape Room gets a less long awaited sequel after just 2.5 years. After 25 years, Bugs Bunny and the Toon Squad are back!
Warner Bros. has released the first official trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 basketball classic that mixed NBA players with Looney Tunes icons. The film will release theatrically in the United States and on HBO Max on July 16.
This time around, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James replaces NBA legend Michael Jordan as the face of the “Space Jam” franchise. Playing a heightened version of himself, James struggles to bond with his tech-savvy son Dom (Ceyair J. Wright), who dreams of being a video game developer. LeBron James, currently the greatest basketball player on the planet, is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated upcoming film Space Jam: A New Legacy. James recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his team-up with the Looney Tunes, a follow-up to the massively successful original Space Jam, which starred then-greatest player Michael Jordan and earned $230 million at the box office, spawned a billion-dollar merchandise empire, and inspired a soundtrack that went six times platinum.
In an interview with the magazine, James, director Malcom D. Lee, and producer Ryan Coogler spilled all sorts of details about the film, which is slated to be released theatrically and on HBO Max simultaneously on July 16, and they sound, well … looney. The movie finds James drifting through some of Warner Bros. most famous IP like Batman, King Kong, Mad Max, The Matrix, Wonder Woman, and Casablanca, similar to The Lego Batman Movie.

Few anecdotes better encapsulate just who WNBA rookie Sabrina Ionescu is than the story of Feb. 24. A longtime mentee of Kobe Bryant's, University of Oregon's star point guard was tapped to serve as one of eight speakers at his and Gianna Bryant's public memorial. Stepping to the mic just after nine-time league All-Star Diana Taurasi and ahead of the likes of Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal, the college senior delivered a rousing speech about how 13-year-old Gianna, already a basketball phenom with UConn aspirations, had been the "future" of the women's game. "I wanted to be a part of the generation that changed basketball for...

Michael Jordan Calls Kobe Bryant His ‘Little Brother’ During Emotional Tribute: ‘A Piece of Me Died’
NBA legend Michael Jordan was the latest to give a moving speech about Kobe Bryant during Monday’s public memorial, bringing some much-needed levity while paying tribute to his “little brother.”
“In the game of basketball and life as a parent, Kobe left nothing in the tank. He left it all on the floor,” he began. “Maybe it would surprise people that kobe and I were very close friends, but we were very close friends. Kobe was my dear friend. He was like a little brother.”
Throughout his entire speech, Jordan had tears streaming down his face, visibly showing how Bryant’s sudden and tragic death had affected him. He then used that to give the audience a much-needed laugh, by referencing the infamous “Crying Jordan” internet meme, which was taken from his Hall of Fame induction speech in 2009. “Now he’s got me, I’m gonna have to look...

Updated with new details, check back for more: Beyoncé opened the Celebration of Life for Kobe and Gianna Bryant memorial service Monday at Staples Center by singing “Xo,” complete with a chorus and multi-piece orchestra.
She was followed by longtime Lakers fan Jimmy Kimmel, who is serving as an emcee of sorts of the event, and a shaky but strong Vanessa Bryant, who is talking about her “baby girl” Gianna and her husband, “my everything.”
Vanessa Bryant nearly broke down when she was announced to the stage, which was set up as a theater-in-the-round style in the center of the arena. She recovered after encouraging applause from the sellout crowd, reading a tribute to Gigi, who was 13. “I miss her so much,” she said, adding that “she would have been the best player in the Wnba…she would have changed women’s basketball.”
“Now my soulmate,” she said of Kobe Bryant.

There was a real-world vibe on LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s Uninterrupted talk show The Shop today as California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill that gives the state’s college student-athletes the ability to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness.
The Fair Pay to Play Act (Sb 206) is the first of its kind in the U.S. It addresses the Ncaa’s longstanding ban on student athletes earning compensation from their association with college sports even though their respective school can make millions from their athletic performance.
Newsom signed the legislation live on The Shop alongside James — a vocal proponent of the bill — Carter, UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi, Wnba star Diana Taurasi, former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon, James’ agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group and the bill’s co-sponsor, state Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley).

Lebron James is teasing Space Jam fans.
The NBA champion used his Instagram Story on Tuesday to celebrate his favorite day of the week, “Taco Tuesday,” but this time it was while he was on the set shooting for his upcoming film, Space Jam 2.
“Y’all I’m on Space Jam right now shooting, and ya’ll wish I could show you all the whole uniform but I can’t,” he sadly revealed to the fans, wearing a gray towel over his shoulders to cover his outfit.

Space Jam 2 has had a long road to production. The movie has already had a few hiccups along the way, but it looks like the LeBron James production has hit another snag. The director of the film, Terence Nance, has exited the film and according to Deadline, he’s been replaced with Malcolm D. Lee.
According to the report, Nance ended up stepping away because the studio and producers had different takes on the creative vision for the film. It’s funny, you think this is something they would have figured out before they started shooting the movie. I’m sure there’s more behind the scenes drama going on that no one is talking about.
We don’t know anything about the story for the film, but Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green was previously cast as LeBron's wife. It’s also said that there’s a best...

Don Cheadle, who we recently saw in action in Avengers: Endgame as War Machine, has joined the cast of LeBron James’ Space Jam 2. Everyone loves Don Cheadle so it’s pretty cool that he’s joining the project. He’ll make a great addition to the cast.
There are no details on who Cheadle is playing in the movie, so we’ll just have to wait and see how things play out. The actor will join the previously cast Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery) who will play LeBron's wife in the story. It’s also said that there’s a best friend character in the film named Malik, “modeled after Maverick Carter, LeBron's childhood buddy and producing partner in SpringHill.”
We also know that NBA players Damian Lillard, Anthony Davis, and Klay Thompson will appear in the film along with Wnba stars Diana Taurasi and Nneka Ogwumike. Several more NBA and Wnba players,...

I’m a long time fan of EA Sports’ NBA Live franchise. In terms of historical significance, NBA Live 95 remains, to this day, the greatest basketball game I’ve ever played. Not because the controls were the best or the graphics were visually stunning; it’s because my friends and I got together almost every day and played it, and played it, and played it again. So my basis of fandom for the franchise is simply tied up into nostalgia for the fun times we had playing together. When EA brought NBA Live back in 2014, it was an abomination and a far cry from those halcyon days in the mid-90s. Now, so far into the shadow of Take-Two’s NBA 2K franchise that it needs to wear a jacket for warmth, NBA Live is desperately trying to reestablish an inside presence in the paint, and with NBA Live 19, they may have succeeded.
