The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures keeps on partying.
Just four nights after a gala opening celebration was held at the new complex located on the Lacma campus in Los Angeles, Robert Pattinson and H.E.R. co-chaired, along with museum director and president Bill Kramer and Vanity Fair editor Britt Hennemuth, the Premiere party on Wednesday night. The guest list included Rebel Wilson, Zooey Deschanel, Clea DuVall and more.
“It’s strange that it doesn’t exist already in L.A.,” Pattinson told Variety of the long-in-the-works museum. “It’s bizarre. So I’m very very honored to be a part of it.”
As a film buff and a newly minted Academy member, the “Batman” actor was particularly eager to take in the Hayao Miyazaki exhibit and the 1,000 seat David Geffen theater. “Being really geeky about it, the technical specs sound insane,” he added.

Academy Museum Reveals Launch Programs and Screenings for Fall, from Spike Lee to ‘The Wizard of Oz’
Finally, after years of delays, some caused by the pandemic, some not, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on La Brea and Wilshire has revealed its launch schedule of live screenings and public programs to begin on opening day, September 30. The first three months brings over 115 film programs, panels, and events, beginning with two screenings of MGM musical “The Wizard of Oz” (1939) with live musical accompaniment by the American Youth Symphony conducted by Oscar perennial David Newman.
Among the continuing virtual programs leading up to the museum’s opening are a conversation with Oscar-winner Spike Lee and writer-director-producer Shaka King, and a 20th anniversary screening of “Y tu mamá también”. Clearly, the Academy Museum is launching at a time when inclusion and diversity are front and center for curators and programmers. “As with all of our exhibitions and initiatives,” stated Bill Kramer, Director and President of the Academy Museum, “we...

The museum held a virtual tour for media Wednesday to discuss the programming and museum’s progress, hosted by Academy governor Laura Dern.
Throughout the presentation, Academy spokespersons emphasized the inclusion of a diverse array of filmmakers and artisans from the U.S. and around the world. The museum will not ignore the industry’s blindspots, the presentation emphasized.

The Los Angeles museum had been set to open in April, after delaying from December.
The opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles has once again been pushed back, this time to September 30, 2021.

Announced in 2012, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures was originally set to open in 2017. Financing problems, construction delays, and the pandemic pushed back the date again and again. It was finally going to open this month, then its directors followed the Oscars and pushed to April 2021. Now, the date shifts once more to September 30, 2021, following a September 25 gala.
The 2021 Oscars were supposed to be the global promo blast. “We used that timing strategically, thinking back then that we would be far out of the pandemic in April,” said Academy museum Director Bill Kramer. “Obviously, that’s not going to be. We will still have a presence on the Oscars. And we will lean into virtual programming options between April and September around museum content, to make our presence and content known.” If you build a museum during Covid, that doesn’t mean they will come.

The Academy Museum opening planned for April 30 has been postponed. The long awaited and oft delayed opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is on the move again, shuttling to early Fall of next year and all due to continuing uncertainties about the state of the coronavirus pandemic. The not-so-surprising move, due to the dire circumstances of living in a world wracked by Covid-19, means the Museum which had most recently been scheduled to open to the public on April 30, 2021, just a few days after the April 25th Academy Awards (which was itself forced to move to its latest Spring date ever due to the pandemic), will now open instead five months later on September 30, 2021, with the invitational gala re-scheduled for September 25. Because of the great unknown about the Covid crisis, which is now setting daily records in California and other states for positive tests and deaths, the Museum leadership felt it couldn’t roll the dice by keeping the late April date.

When it comes to awards season, the luncheons take the cake. AFI Awards lunch, usually around the first Friday in January, is always a warm affair where everyone in the room is a winner, and today’s annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon had the same good-feeling vibe as it always does. Each year’s class of nominees gets to catch up with one another, take a class photo and get their official nomination certificate before heading off to the rest of their day, or more interviews with press. The fact is, the campaign still goes on and ballots don’t even go to voters until Thursday.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences added more details Monday to the news relayed at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon by president David Rubin that the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has reached 95% of its funding goal. AMPAS said the institution has raised more than $368 million in pledges and cash, near its $388 million pre-opening campaign goal.
The Campaign for the Academy Museum was launched in 2012, headed by chair Bob Iger and co-chairs Annette Bening and Tom Hanks. Rubin gave Iger a shout-out today at the luncheon at the Ray Dolby Ballroom.
The Academy Museum is still targeting a 2020 open date for its Mid-Wilshire District home, saying the 300,000 square-foot public and exhibition space is in its final exhibition design, build-out, and testing stages.

Fundraising for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has reached more than $368 million in pledges and cash, making up 95% of its $388 million campaign goal.
The announcement was by Academy President David Rubin at the nominees luncheon on Monday, less than two weeks before the 92nd Academy Awards on Feb. 9. The Academy also said the facility would open later this year at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, where the former May Co. department store was located, following final exhibition design, build-out and testing. It gave no specific date.

The Academy launched a $250 million fundraising campaign and collected $200 million in pledges. After that, however, fundraising stalled and costs ballooned.
