"Oblivion" feels like the rare big-budget Tom Cruise vehicle that doesn't get talked about very much, despite being helmed by the A-lister's "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski. The film casts Cruise as Jack Harper, a humble maintenance techie who oversees operations on Earth in the wake of an alien attack that forced humanity to abandon the planet. All is not what it seems, though, as Jack keeps having visions of a mysterious woman from his past (Olga Kurylenko), only for her to abruptly crash-land on Earth out of the blue. Basically, if you were to chuck "The Twilight Zone," "2001: A Space Odyssey," the original 1977 "Star Wars," and a handful of other '60s and '70s sci-fi titles into a blender, you might come up with something like "Oblivion."

Tru Calling arrived on the small screen at a pivotal time for fans of genre fare in 2003.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer had just ended, so there was a desire from networks to get its most recognizable cast on new projects.
Eliza Dushku could have continued playing Buffy's onetime adversary in a planned spinoff, but instead of choosing the predictable, the actress opted to take a hard left turn to steer her career in a different direction.
The series starred Dushku as Tru Davies, a young woman who takes a job at a morgue when her internship falls through.
Yes, there's far more to the plot than that, with the unique spin that found the deceased waking up from the dead and asking her to help them.
That allowed Tru to relive the day to find out what happened to them and to try to change the events.
It was a compelling hook,...

The wait is almost over: the BBC has confirmed that the eighth series of Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s horror-comedy anthology Inside No. 9 will start on Thursday the 27th of April at 10 p.m. on BBC Two and iPlayer.
The official summary for the new series (which will be the penultimate run for the Bafta-winning show as its creators plan to take an indefinite break from it after series nine), is as follows: “From the top deck of a London bus to a remote lakeside cabin, from online dating to a late-night summoning, all life (and death) is here. Thrills, spills, chills and kills from the fertile minds of Shearsmith and Pemberton.”
With the release news came the first official teaser trailer (see below), with glimpses of all five episodes arriving in the wake of excellent festive special ‘The Bones of St Nicholas‘. That story was set in...

Critical reactions to Joseph Kosinski's post-apocalyptic thriller, "Oblivion," have either been begrudgingly appreciative or outright dismissive since its release in 2013. Most perceive it as a bland, hollow tentpole movie that regurgitates telltale action-thriller beats, where Tom Cruise plays yet another morally-ambivalent character who eventually emerges as the "hero." However, the core of Kosinski's sci-fi gem lies beneath several layers of visual spectacle — somewhere in the strikingly desolate landscape, there's a lush forest opening with a cozy cabin filled with loving memorabilia. This safe space plays a seminal role for drone repair technician Jack Harper (Cruise), as it functions both as an emotional tether and a hideout until the war on Earth is over. It also elevates "Oblivion" above run-of-the-mill sci-fi entries about alien takeovers and clones, while adding layers to a thought-provoking human adventure.

If October is a month that many movie fans dedicate to horror films, and December is all about holiday films, what are film lovers supposed to do in November? There is, of course, Noirvember, the great celebration of noir film created by writer Marya E. Gates back in 2010. But for those who don't partake in the black-and-white watchathon, November is a month with a wide-open watchlist. If you're hankering for something different to keep your attention as the cold season sets in, why not go for sc-fi?
Science fiction is, after all, a versatile genre. It encompasses everything from aliens and robots to movies about deeply philosophical ideas that you witness in your bones as much as in your mind. It also has more crossover potential than it often gets credit for: sci-fi-comedy, sci-fi-romance, and sci-fi-horror are just a few of the genre hybrids that make science fiction as accessible as it is.

Like a department store that pulls out its winter holiday items weeks before All Hallows' Eve, Netflix isn't going to let a little thing like the calendar stop it from bombarding its subscribers with Christmas movies in November. That's not to say the streamer's exclusive yuletide rom-coms are all bad — quite the opposite, in fact (consider this your friendly reminder to finally watch "Single All the Way" this year).
Fortunately, if films like "Falling for Christmas" (aka the long-awaited Lindsay Lohan Netflix Christmas movie) aren't your bag, there are plenty of other options on the service to choose from that month. Perhaps you'd be more inclined to watch "Slumberland," Francis Lawrence's fantasy film adaptation of Winsor McCay's classic "Little Nemo in Slumberland" comic strips starring Jason Momoa as a shaggy-furred half-man, half-animal with mountain goat horns and an impeccably flamboyant fashion sense? You could also go for the...

In desperate times, the price to overlook your scruples and ignore that voice of doubt in your head moves from the impossibly high to the compromisingly real. For Jack Harper (Chris Pine), a check for $50,000 to participate in a seemingly easy, private military operation — with more cash to follow once the mission is complete — is enough for him to sign on with no questions asked, if only to keep collection agencies off his front porch.

The round-up returns once again! With so many independent releases hitting theaters here in early September, it’s almost impossible not to have to play catch-up like this. Today, we’ve got five new films to give a quick take on, including one in Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! that I admittedly forget to discuss last week. Joining that documentary are the horror efforts Depraved and Haunt, along with the doc Liam Gallagher: As It Was, as well as the indie comedy Can You Keep a Secret? It’s quite the group! How many of them are worth your time and money? Do any especially stand out from the pack? Time to dive in and answer just that… Can You Keep A Secret? Romantic comedies used to be big business. Hollywood loved to put them out. Now? Not so much, and it’s a shame. It has become...

Director Elise Duran’s “Can You Keep A Secret?” makes it clear from the very first moments the animated opening credits play over the Go-Go’s “Our Lips Are Sealed” that it’s going to be a sweet, if not satisfactory time spent in the golden-hour glow of this romantic comedy’s world. Based on Sophie Kinsella’s book, her first standalone novel after the success of her “Confessions of a Shopaholic” series, . That said, it lacks a sense of uniqueness to set it apart from other female-centric book-to-screen adaptations.
