Kathryn Bigelow’s 1990 film Blue Steel flirts with contrivance from the start. Megan Turner (Jamie Lee Curtis) joins the NYPD out of a desire to overcome an abusive childhood with a position of civic authority, then finds her job immediately threatened when a fatal shootout at a convenience store places her under internal-affairs review. To make matters more outlandish, Eugene Hunt (Ron Silver), a commodities trader whose theft of a gun from the crime scene prompted Turner’s investigation in the first place, begins to romantically pursue and eventually outright stalk her.
These are a lot of farfetched narrative strands to pile onto a B movie, but Bigelow uses this setup to deconstruct the eroticized violence of 1980s action cinema in a manner as striking and confrontational as her earlier Point Break. But if that film examined the homosocial bonds between men, Blue Steel leans into complex, insoluble gender politics...

The impact of George A. Romero’s Dead movies reached far and wide. After 1968’s Night of the Living Dead defined the modern zombie as we know it, 1978’s Dawn of the Dead kick-started zombie cinema in earnest. Not only did it herald a horde of undead movies domestically, the infection spread internationally — although the outbreak took longer to reach some regions than others.
While Italy was first to strike with Lucio Fulci’s Zombie in 1979, Hong Kong wouldn’t get its first zombie movie until two decades later. A zombie film set in a mall, 1998’s Bio Zombie is a direct descendant of Dawn of the Dead. It also draws influence from the original Resident Evil game (which is featured in the film), although the zombie comedy plays more like a Return of the Living Dead sequel by way of early Kevin Smith (think Clerks or Mallrats).

Citing her desire to give them more control over their lives, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has relieved four of her grandchildren of their royal titles, the royal palace revealed on Sept. 28.
"With her decision, Her Majesty The Queen wishes to create the framework for the four grandchildren to be able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by the special considerations and duties that a formal affiliation with the Royal House of Denmark as an institution involves," the palace's statement read.
The queen originally bestowed royal titles on all of her grandchildren, per the palace's statement. As of today, Margrethe's second son Joachim's children will no longer be referred to as prince and princess and "his/her highness." This means that Nikolai, 23, and Felix, 20, whom he shares with his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, and his children with current wife Princess Marie - Henrik,...

The disturbing British coming-of-age thriller I Start Counting (1970), starring Jenny Agutter, makes its US Blu-ray debut on a pristine remastered Region A disc, loaded with fresh extras, courtesy of boutique label Fun City Editions.
Adapted from the 1966 novel of the same name by Audrey Erskine Lindop, I Start Counting is a welcome relic of its era: it is distinctively late-1960s in its fashions and characterizations, and it is decidedly British in its affectations, despite harboring a rather risque subject matter.

If you've ever been involved in post-production on a film, you'll know that there's a moment during the early stages of editing when one cannot help but be aware that one is looking at multiple stories, not just one - that fragments of the same material can be rearranged to create very different narratives and very different moods. Chris O'Neill's experimental reworking of found footage from an old, little-seen horror film stays within genre but brings this glorious uncertainty to light, highlighting the fact that film is a fractal medium and that the only real truths to be found within it are those we choose to construct.
It begins with a man screaming. This being what it is, there's a lot of screaming, but you won't hear it; until the very end, when a brief snippet of wisdom is shared, all you'll hear is Gabbie Bam Bam's vibrant electronic soundtrack,...

Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill of Sweden celebrated Princess Adrienne's royal christening in Stockholm last week, and now we have a glimpse of the official portraits. On Tuesday, the Royal Court released four photographs from the affair, which were snapped by photographer Erika Gerdemark at Drottningholm Slott Palace.
The pictures feature Adrienne with her proud parents, as well as Madeleine's parents, King Carl Xiv and Queen Silvia, and Chris's mother, Eva Maria Walter. Adrienne's six godparents - Coralie Charriol Paul, Nader Panahpour, Natalie Werner, Anouska d'Abo, Gustav Thott, and Carlotte Kreuger Cederlund - also make a special appearance in one of the portraits. And as an added bonus, a solo photo of Madeleine was included in honor of her 36th birthday, which was on June 10.
