Prime Video is gearing up for the heist of the century with Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner. The streamer has given a series order for the new drama Haven, about an ordinary office worker who finds herself at the center of a high-stakes crime.
“A typical workday at a pension fund investment company, Lochmill Capital, is upended when violent thieves burst in and force Zara (played by Turner) and her best mate Luke (Saltburn’s Archie Madekwe) to execute their demands,” reads the synopsis. Rhys (The Queen’s Gambit’s Jacob Fortune-Lloyd), a cop and a recently relapsed gambling addict investigating the heist,...

Sophie Turner hasn’t acted a whole lot since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019. She was in a Quibi show called “Wilderness,” had a viral cameo in Netflix movie “Do Revenge,” and was part of the ensemble in the Max limited series “The Staircase.” But she hasn’t had a lead role in a prominent series of her own.
But that’s changing, as Turner has signed on to star in “Haven” (working title), a British crime thriller that’s coming to Prime Video.
Turner will play Zara, an ordinary employee at a pension fund management company called Lochmill Capital, who is thrust into an extraordinary situation when a gang of thieves invade the office and force her and her friend Luke to transfer billions of pounds worth of pension funds. Meanwhile, Dci Rhys, a recently relapsed gambling addict, has to stave off his own financial ruin while he investigates the complex,...

Heatseeking filmmaker Olmo Schnabel has signed for representation with WME, and with Black Bear for management.
Schnabel’s breakout directorial effort “Pet Shop Days” played both the Venice International Film Festival and SXSW this cycle, scoring distribution from Utopia for a 2024 theatrical release. Starring Jack Irv, Darío Yazbek Bernal, Willem Dafoe and Peter Sarsgaard, the film tells of a drug lord scion on the run from his powerful family. Slumming it in New York in a haze of sex and drugs, he seduces an equally lost young man and pulls him into the city’s underbelly.
The provocative debut also hit festivals in Chicago, Montclair, Morelia, Santa Barbara and Sarasota. Schnabel was also awarded the Leffest Lisboa Film Festival’s Tap Revelation Award.

The Critics Choice Award for chutzpah goes to … the lady swathed in gold lamé, sporting a Mohawk fade hairstyle who, without so much as a by-your-leave, crashed past me and scooped up a bottle of Milagro Silver tequila that was part of the centerpiece on tables at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.
“Can I,” she asks, grabbing the booze.
Wasn’t my liquor.
The thing that made me jump up in my seat was that Mohawk Lady already had bottles under her arm.
Quick as a flash, she repeated the same move at neighboring tables.
By now she had a haul of five or six bottles. Crash! One of them fell to the ground, so she swiped a replacement.
Stirred the former crime reporter in me. Who was Mohawk Lady?
She’s an online critic, someone at another table tells me.
Later on I ask her directly but she mumbles,...

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) brings us a beautifully wicked tale of privilege and desire. Speaking with Vanity Fair in August, Fennell described Saltburn as a “very British tale of excess.

This article contains major spoilers for "Saltburn."
Filmmaker Emerald Fennell is officially two-for-two when it comes to movies that people either love or hate. Her 2020 feature directorial debut, "Promising Young Woman," got everyone hyped with a killer trailer and early rave reviews, but the ending earned a lot of backlash. Now Fennell's second film, "Saltburn," is carving an even sharper chasm in opinion.
It's only fair to confess right away that "Saltburn" is in serious danger of being my favorite film of 2023. First of all, it's a nostalgia-seeking missile for anyone who went to a British university in the mid-to-late aughts, especially when it comes to the needle drops. My other weaknesses include big old houses, comically posh characters, gross stuff, morbid humor, fun villains, lavish costumes, references to Greek mythology, and hot people lounging around having lazy summers, so really, I was doomed to love this one (see also:...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series, spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts, continues with Saltburn, the brutally dark satirical thriller written and directed by Emerald Fennell. The pic marks her sophomore feature, on the heels of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar winner Promising Young Woman.
Stylish and idiosyncratic, Saltburn engendered huge buzz in its Telluride world premiere before going on to hit theaters in November. The Amazon MGM Studios title, set in mid-2000s England, tells the story of Oliver (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford student who initially struggles to find his place at the university, before undertaking some cunning social climbing. After making his way into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), he’s invited to his eccentric and uber-wealthy family’s estate for a summer he’ll never forget.

Plot: Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton, who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.
Review: We all have a fascination with the rich. The sordid lives of the aristocratic have always made for brilliant fodder in novels, television, and film. For her second directorial effort, Emerald Fennell has looked into the lives of a clan of rich Brits through the eyes of an outsider. Oscar-winning writer/director Emerald Fennell bowled audiences over with A Proming Young Woman, her intelligent, taut thriller directorial debut. This year, Emerald Fennell brings us Saltburn, a star-studded dark comedy dealing with the British class divide and privilege, with an unsettling, horror film slant. Even the film’s Gothic script title treatment sets the mood for this contemporary twisty thriller.
Set in the mid-2000s, Saltburn stars Barry Keoghan as Oliver Quick, a bright scholarship student at Oxford who is eager to fit in socially with the upper crust as succeed academically. The academics are easy for Oliver, but social class aspirations are another matter. Finding himself on the outside, persistent Oliver eventually is befriended by handsome, charming, aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), one of the most popular students at his college. When Felix learns the working-class lad has nowhere to go for the summer break,...

In America, we still like to pretend we don’t operate within an Old World-style class system. (Should you continue to labor under that delusion in the year of our lord 2023, we suggest you try taking a commercial airline flight some time.) Anyone can rise above their station, one bootstrap-tug at a time! England, however, has never tried to hide the fact that there was, is, and always has been a separation of haves and have-nots governed by toxic traditionalism, strict social strata, and fetishized notions of aristocracy.

Emerald Fennell's sophomore feature, "Saltburn," plays like a gothic romance. There's sex, there's intrigue, and eventually things turn to murder. As our own Jacob Hall said in his review, "it's one of the bleakest films of 2023, and a real bad time at the movies."
This is a film full of twists and turns, one that plays with the particulars of British class, and a film where Barry Keoghan essentially plays a hornier and queerer Tom Ripley.
Much like "Promising Young Woman," Fennell's "Saltburn" ends very much open to interpretation, with a finale that offers as many answers as it does questions. This is a psychosexual thriller that is often disturbing, quite horny, and features one of the best villains of the year.
Whether you are confused about the ending or you simply want to check out another read on Oliver's master plan, here's what happens at the end...

It’s a cool indie weekend when the new album by André 3000, New Blue Sun, has morphed into a “cinematic listening experience.” Variance Films is putting the experience, directed by Terence Nance, into three theaters in NYC (IFC Center), LA (Cinepolis Inglewood) and Atlanta (Tara).
Right now, it’s just those locations but after this weekend, “We will see what happens, where the wind takes us,” said Variance CEO Dylan Marchetti. “I swear, I wanted to make a ‘visual album’ but this is literally the way the wind blew me this time,” André has said.
Asked what’s is on the screen, Marchetti said, “Vibes.”
New Blue Sun, out today, is André’s debut solo album, his first full-length LP since his group Outkast released its last record 17 years ago. He described it as “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living,...

Savannah, Georgia is an appropriate setting for a conversation with filmmaker Emerald Fennell about her newest film “Saltburn,” which follows an Oxford student who becomes enmeshed with a wealthy classmate’s eccentric family during a summer at their country estate. “It’s fully Gothic, especially at Halloween, so it’s really my favorite kind of place,” said the director to IndieWire during a recent interview. Though, in an interview setting that featured walls that alternated between hard, slate gray panels, and thin, beaming bars of fluorescent lighting, Fennell joked that the whole thing felt a bit like “a ‘John Wick’ interrogation.”
In town to accept the Spotlight Director Award at the Scad Savannah Film Festival, Fennell denied feeling a daunting amount of pressure around what to follow up her Academy Award-winning debut “Promising Young Woman” with. “I usually have a few things going on, but I don’t write them down.

Jacob Elordi is quickly building up a resume of iconic party scenes, starting with his work on Euphoria and now in his new movie, Saltburn.
The film, written and directed by Emerald Fennell, follows Oxford student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), who is brought into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Elordi) when he is invited to spend the summer at Saltburn, Felix’s eccentric family’s sprawling estate. The parties rage on at the castle, and Elordi joked that filming these festivities were “way faster than shooting a Euphoria party scene, for sure.”
Fennell also “did this Kubrick thing — one of the dinner scenes was all candlelit, so you don’t get that in Euphoria, there’s way more neon lights,” he told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday. “The vibe is really different.”

Emerald Fennell reacted to the end of the actors strike ahead of a screening of her upcoming film, Saltburn.
The Oscar-winning writer hit the red carpet in New York City on Thursday with star and Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan to celebrate the MGM drama. The screening marked one of the first events following SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reaching a deal, therefore ending the 118-day actors strike, which allowed for Keoghan’s special appearance.
“I feel great. The strike is over,” Fennell told The Hollywood Reporter. “Honestly, I was just so proud of everyone who struck for such a long time and got such a great deal, and it’s just amazing.”
The writer-director, who also produces the film, shared that she was on a plane when she found out the actors strike was over, so she couldn’t celebrate too much, but she cheered quietly in her seat.

It wasn’t a tough decision for Anthony Willis when Emerald Fennell asked him to compose Saltburn, the drama that stars Barry Keoghan as a young and nerdy Oxford university student who becomes obsessed with a popular and wealthy student (Jacob Elordi).
Willis had made the music Fennell’s Promising Young Women, and was obsessed himself with the director’s enthusiasm and sense of humor when approaching a project — especially a daring one like Saltburn, which also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Archie Madekwe, Alison Oliver and Promising Young Woman‘s Carey Mulligan.
The MGM Amazon Studios pic had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and hits U.S. theaters next week.
“She brings out something special in every department,” Willis said of Fennell during a panel for the movie at Deadline’s Sound and Screen: Film event. “She’s such an egalitarian. She has dirty synth.

If there’s any group sure to find delight in Saltburn, it’s devotees of the IMDb goofs section. Emerald Fennell immediately dates the film with an Oxford University “class of 2006” banner, a year that overlaps with her own study there. From a lounging family watching Superbad to a cringeworthy karaoke rendition of Flo-Rida’s “Low,” both 2007 releases, Fennell abandons any sense of fidelity to chronology in her anachronism-ridden millennial time capsule.
But this tendency proves more than just mid-aughts miasma as Saltburn progresses. It’s not just that Fennell’s memory leads her to conflate or mistake details from the period. Her sophomore feature seems to outright ignore the larger forces guiding the masculinity and machinations of Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), a scholarship student who fixates on wealthy classmate Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi) as much as his studies. To sell their parasitic yet platonic relationship as they go back...

Noughties earworms? Check! Knife-sharp social commentary? Check! Carey Mulligan in a wig? Check! This can only mean one thing - Emerald Fennell is back back back, baby. And this time, the :a[Promising Young Woman]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/promising-young-woman/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} mastermind is taking aim at the British elite with :a[_Saltburn]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/emerald-fennell-saltburn-wild-world-lose-our-minds-exclusive/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, which finds Barry Keoghan spending a sordid summer at Jacob Elordi’s decadent country home. Described in its official synopsis as “a beautifully wicked tale of privilege and desire,” the latest trailer for Fennell’s film certainly nails the “beautifully wicked” vibe. Check it out for yourself below:
It takes about five seconds for the Saltburn trailer to establish that our guide into this world of excess and debauchery, Barry Keoghan’s Oxford student Oliver Quick, is a bit of a social outcast.
