“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” held preview screenings and had its Hollywood premiere on Thursday, and that means the reactions are pouring in.
And it’s a given that so far, those who saw it tonight mostly loved it. Attendees in screenings on the east coast or in the central time zones got out first — as we write this, the Hollywood premiere screening is currently about halfway through — so we’ll start with them.
Film critic Bob Chipman calls it “easily the best of the trilogy and a top 5 Marvel Movie,” and he also posits that director James Gunn’s new bosses at Warner. Bros. have to be happy with that decision after seeing this.
Writer Mike Ryan said Gunn “bet the house” on the film, “and won,” and praised how it exists as a sci-fi action film as opposed to another Super Hero joint.
But there was some rumblings of dissent.

About a month ago, we got the shock announcement that director Scott Derrickson had left Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That old chestnut of creative differences was cited, with there reportedly being tension over the intensity of the horror elements in the movie. The search for a replacement began immediately and at the top of my list was The Evil Dead and Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi. Experience with superhero movies. Check. Experience with horror. Check. Dynamic visual style in keeping with Doctor Strange. Big check.
Raimi was the perfect candidate, so naturally I gave a little fist-pump when it was announced last night that he had the job. But despite my total confidence that he’s a great fit, I do have a couple of reservations. For one, the Marvel Studios production line means that action scenes have probably been pre-visualized and big effects shots may be already being worked on.

Thanks in part to the recent success of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – not to mention the new Toy Story 4 – Keanu Reeves is currently one of the internet’s favorite, most meme-able film stars. So when Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige told ComicBook.com earlier this month that he and his team have approached the actor for almost every movie they make, it was all too predictable that the fancasts would come flooding in.
Over on Twitter, for instance, we’ve seen a vast array of suggestions that range from Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four to Namor to Adam Warlock. Apparently, there’s an abundance of ways in which Marvel Studios could make use of the Matrix star, but until an actual casting decision is confirmed, fans can still get a kick out of imagining what might be.

The character posters for Captain Marvel — the next movie to come from the expansive Marvel Universe — have arrived.
Among them are superhero shots of all the film’s stars: Brie Larson, Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson and … Goose the cat?
That’s right: the feline character from the film, played by a handsome orange tabby, got a snazzy shot of his own. The red-and-blue poster has cat lovers on the Internet purring with delight and Marvel fans guessing at what role Goose plays in the new movie that is significant enough to snag him such a coveted spot in the film’s promotion.

Look fast! We got a quick first glimpse at the poster for the new “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie. And video game fans are a bit puzzled at why their iconic blue, cartoon speed demon looks … kind of buff?
IGN premiered the first poster, a brief motion poster, for the live-action/animated hybrid arriving in 2019, and early reactions have pegged Sonic’s as weirdly muscular if not all too much like a human wearing Sonic’s massive head.
“Weird flex But Okay,” one user said on IGN’s Instagram.” “Why does Sonic have knees and elbows,” another questioned.

It’s going on two weeks since Disney severed ties with James Gunn and still, fans continue to bang the drum in support of the ousted Guardians of the Galaxy director.
As a matter of fact, it’s got to the point that ‘#RehireJamesGunn’ is trending all across social media, as aggrieved viewers petition Disney to backpedal and bring Gunn back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recent reports have even gone so far as to suggest that the Mouse House is actively drawing up plans to make that happen, while sources close to Variety indicate that there is now a “growing feeling” that said U-turn, however implausible, is about to occur after all.
This is by no means a sure-thing – at least not yet – as a company of Disney’s size and stature will no doubt spend time deliberating over the situation… for better or worse. That has in no...

I’m still in shock. Who on earth would have believed that Disney would fire Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn? After all, the man took a bunch of D-list comic book characters and turned them into a billion dollar franchise and was on the cusp of shooting the hugely anticipated third installment.
His removal was reportedly the result of the filmmaker calling out Pizza-Gate conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec on Twitter. In revenge, Posobiec and white supremacist Mike Cernovich scoured Gunn’s Twitter history, found some dirt and began a campaign aimed at Disney designed to punish Gunn for disrespecting them and President Trump.
Needless to say, the studio bending over backwards to please fascist chuds hasn’t gone down particularly well on Twitter, with the internet reacting as so:
If you're a "liberal" that is happy about James Gunn's firing yet you choose to ignore the...

Although it might not seem like it because of my dedicated focus on the comings and goings of the film industry, I was actually a Huge fan of The Escapist back in its heyday. Between contributors like Bob Chipman (aka Moviebob), Jim Sterling, Gavin Dunne (aka Miracle of Sound), Ben Croshaw (aka Yahtzee) and the Extra Credits crew, they were, for a short while at least, The place to go for entertainment news, reviews, cultural commentary and just plain fun on the internet.
