After a multi-year hiatus, Pablo Stoll, who broke out with directing partner Juan Pablo Rebella on such hits as “25 Watts” and “Whisky,” is back in the director’s seat, albeit on his own, with “Summer Hit” (“El Tema del Verano”), a zombie pic now shooting on the beaches of Uruguay.
Presented at last year’s Cannes Producers Network, film is co-produced by Temperamento Films (Uruguay), Ice End Content (Chile) and La Unión de los Ríos (Argentina) in association with Nadador Cine (Uruguay).
Ice End Content is the new production shingle formed by Chile’s Florencia Larrea, producer of “My Tender Matador,” and Rodrigo Susarte, director of “The Monster Within,” who are pitching their dark comedy series, “Frankie,” at Sanfic Industria.
Stoll’s fifth feature film starts out as a post-pandemic summer romantic comedy but transforms into a scam film and finally one about the living dead. “Is it possible to...

Chile’s Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic) has unveiled the full list of series projects set to pitch at its upcoming Sanfic Series sidebar, running under the festival’s Sanfic Industria banner Oct. 27-Nov. 5.
“Receiving these fiction series projects from all the countries of the Southern Cone has been extremely gratifying and demonstrates the potential of the region in terms of creative avant-garde. Our role at Series Lab is to create a bridge to channel that potential and bring it closer to the industry,” said Alejandra Marano, Sanfic Series coordinator and Lab mentor.
In addition to the six featured projects, two other series – Paula Parra’s “Allende Pum” and Sofía Corso’s “Fugitivas” – have also been invited to participate at the Sanfic Series workshops.

Broken English Productions, the Latinx production arm of financier Grandave Capital, is boarding “The Monster Within,” the elevated genre film from Chile’s Forastero.
The move follows the worldwide sales rights pick up of Forastero’s “My Tender Matador” by Grandave Capital’s sales arm, Grandave Int’l, at the Venice Film Festival.
“As we want to finance high quality projects, it was an easy decision to continue to do business with Forastero,” said Grandave Capital president Stanley Preschutti, adding: “When you see the additional production companies involved with ‘The Monster Within’ and the projects they have done, that decision was even easier.”
Broken English Productions joins a team of European, North American and Latin American co-producers that apart from Forastero include Denmark’s Space Rocket Nation, the label of Lene Børglum and Nicolas Winding Refn; Canada’s 1976 Productions and Argentina’s Tornado Cine, founded by producers Alejandro Israel and Ezequiel Borovinsky.

Cancun, Mexico — Parox, one of Chile’s most internationally-minded TV production houses, is set to produce 10-part “Silver Bridge” (Puente de Plata), a 1950s-set, true-events-inspired drama series tracing the cocaine trade’s origins back to the Huasaffs, a Chilean mob clan.
Billed as a feminist action-melodrama come narco series, “Silver Bridge” is produced by Parox’s Leonora Gonzalez, Alvaro Cabello and Sergio Gándara. The series is currently being written by Enrique Videla, co-scribe of Pablo Larrain’s HBO series “Fugitives” (“Prófugos”) and “Ventana,” the feature -debut of emerging Chilean auteur Rodrigo Susarte.
“Silver Bridge” has tapped development finance from Chile’s Corfu, part of its Ministry of Economy. Gándara and Gonzalez introduced the project to potential co-production partners and global platform execs at this year’s MipCancun market.
Much is made of Colombia’s narcos. Far less is known, let alone hits TV screens, of Chile’s. By the end of WWII,...

San Sebastian — Smart genre, zombies and throwbacks to the ’70s and ‘80s are some of the current trends in genre cinema, according to some specialists in the field. It’s a cyclical dynamic now offering meaningful box office hits such as Corin Hardy’s “The Nun” or Ari Aster’s “Hereditary.” Genre cinema always attracts the attention of industry players. These are some of them.
An auteur-driven trend commands greatest consensus among experts. Matteo Lovadina, CEO of Paris-based sales and co-production company Reel Suspects, observed that some great examples recently of genre film have, “thanks to their clever storytelling,” been able to attract both auteur and genre audiences.
“Films like Joachim Trier’s ‘Thelma,’ Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’, David Robert Mitchell’s ‘It Follows’ or ‘Hereditary,’ have brought genre cinema again into focus and restored a certain credit to this hidden part of the cinematic world,” Lovadina observed.

Barcelona — “Hellboy’s” Ron Perlman will feature as the special guest at this year’s 4th Sitges Pitchbox, replacing last year’s star mentor, Guillermo del Toro.
Rapidly emerging as one of the coolest events on Spain’s industry event circuit, organized by online platform Filmarket Hub, the Sitges Pitchbox will take place Oct. 5 during this year’s Sitges Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, a mecca for fanboys and a trendy crowd of cinema-goers from Barcelona.
Perlman, an articulate and cultured actor as likely to quote Shakespeare as a genre movie in interviews, looks set to deliver some advice to the producer-directors pitching genre projects at the event and a packed audience.
Widely known for, if often hardly recognizable in, movies such as “Hellboy’,” Perlman’s works include TV series “Sons of Anarchy,” “Hand of God” – which he starred in and produced for Amazon Studios– and “Beauty and the Beast,...

With the new year well on its way it is time once again to bring about focus on Frontières and it's ongoing and awesome work to help create more international genre films. For the first time a project from South America will participate in a Frontières program. The Monster Within, by filmmaker Rodrigo Susarte (Ventana 2014), is a joint effort from his native Chile and their partner in Europe in Denmark. Prior to this, two projects from Mexico were...

Blood Window, the first Latin American Fantastic Film Market, has been attracting plenty of interest at the fifth edition of Ventana Sur (Dec 3-6) in Buenos Aires.
Dedicated to the genre in all of its diversity, the new section presents 56 films produced between 2011 and 2013, including works-in-progress and projects.
“The idea is to offer a space for Latin American ‘fantastic’ films where distributors, sales agents, directors and festival programmers from the five continents can have access to all the productions in different stages,” said Blood Window coordinator Javier Fernandez.
The so-called ‘fantastic’ cinema is particularly vibrant in Latin America. “In countries like Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Brazil, this genre grew strong thanks to the creation of film schools and specialised festivals such as Morbido in Mexico, Fantaspoa in Brazil and Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre in Argentina,” added Fernandez.
Renowned directors to come up through the movement, according to Fernandez, include Adrian Gracia Bogliano from Argentina who directed Ahi Va...
