In the first scene of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Charlotte (India Amarteifio) sulks in a carriage en route to marry King George. Her brother jokes that she hasn’t moved in six hours.
Charlotte scowls and responds: “The gown sits atop a bespoke underpinning made of whalebone. The problem with whalebone is that it is rather sharp. I am in the height of fashion, so this corset is quite snug. If I move too much, I might be sliced and stabbed to death by my undergarments. I am angry and I cannot breathe. Turn this carriage around or I will bounce. I will impale myself on this ridiculous corset and bleed to death.”
This monologue is great for setting up Charlotte’s feistiness. But Charlotte is very misinformed about her own underwear. European women in the 1760s called their structured undergarments “stays” not “corsets.” Stays weren’t made with...

Bridgertonwhisks fans into a fantasy version of Regency England they’ve never seen before. The series unveils an integrated ton, where biracial romance is embraced and the queen (Golda Rosheuvel) is a Black woman. But, we’re told, the aristocracy wasn’t always so welcoming.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story unfurls the origin story of the “beautiful mixture of humanity” on display in the Bridgerton universe, as executive producer Betsy Beers calls it. At the very core of this tale is the Great Experiment, which kicks off when young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) arrives in England to marry young King George (Corey Mylchreest). The lives of Black socialites like young Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas) are revolutionized in the process.
The Queen Charlotte cast, creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes and the other executive producers are ready to answer every question you have about the Experiment that changed the ton forever.

Any marriage that lasts nearly six decades is certainly a story for the ages, especially if it’s rooted in reality, like the one at the center of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
The origins of the 57-year romance between Britain’s King George III and Queen Charlotte are the subject of the series, which was created by Shonda Rhimes and based on characters first introduced on-screen in Bridgerton.
While the British king and queen are very real figures, the six-episode interpretation of their romance is fictional. As the series reminds you in its opening moments, “It is not a history lesson. It is fiction inspired by fact.”
Portrayed in their 1800s iterations by Golda Rosheuvel and James Fleet and as their 1700s predecessors by India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest, the royal couple aren’t all that was pulled from history books to create the world of Queen Charlotte. Read...

Queen Charlotteintroduces Bridgerton universe fans to many a new character. Not only does the cast include younger versions of Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio), King George (Corey Mylchreest) and Lady Danbury (Arsema Thomas), but also the countless family members, friends and frenemies who orbit them.
It’s an enthralling step into Bridgerton past that is likely to leave you begging for more. So much so that you may be ready to (re)visit some of the Regency romance’s most unforgettable moments — namely, the ones in Bridgerton Season 2. As with Queen Charlotte, the cast of Bridgerton Season 2 is juggling family secrets, high expectations and complicated love.

PinkPantheress’ priorities couldn’t be more in order. Her commitment to the early 2000s aesthetic led her to channel the romantic comedies of that time in the music video for her latest single “Mosquito.” But instead of yearning for the affection of men with deeply hit-or-miss haircuts, she went with the more obvious win: those shopping sprees the protagonist and her friends always seemed to have endless funds for.
PinkPantheress stars in the nostalgia-drenched video alongside Bridgerton actress Charithra Chandran, Queen Charlotte star India Amarteifio, and Black-ish lead Yara Shahidi.

Throughout the respective seasons of The Crown and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the audience watches two royal women, Princess Diana and Charlotte, take charge of their narratives. Their evolution also is visible in their hair.
Diana’s hair grows out from her iconic crop in the fifth season of the Netflix drama, eventually getting sleeker and more glamorous as she liberates herself from her marriage to Prince Charles. “For me, that evolution is of someone who is taking her independence and realizing her own value, her star value and what she was doing,” says The Crown hair designer Cate Hall. “She sort of looked like a film star by the end of that period.” It coincides with a change in hairdressing: “Her hair was silkier. Everything looked more glossy.”

As fans campaign for a second season of "Queen Charlotte," we're still reeling from season one's incredible performances, namely Arsema Thomas's impressive portrayal of Lady Agatha Danbury. In "Bridgerton," Lady Danbury is an established noblewoman with a reputation for being a natural leader. In the spinoff, however, viewers catch a glimpse at her early life as an aristocrat, including her friendship with Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio), her complex relationship with Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri), and her beginnings as one of the most trusted - and feared - members of the ton.
For Thomas, the prospect of playing such a well-established and beloved character was "extremely scary." But that only made her more eager to do the character justice. "As an actor, you rarely get such a complex and challenging character to play, also specifically as a Black woman," she tells Popsugar.

With too much television, viewing every piece of content that is up for consideration for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations is impossible. With 163 drama series, 95 comedies, 51 limited or anthologies and 61 television movies, every TV-goer has their tastes.
Variety staffers have come together to curate its own dream Primetime Emmys ballot, with voting set to close at 10 p.m. Pt tonight.
However, it should be noted — we love consistency, especially in TV land.
With our selections, we want to continue to promote (and advocate) for the Television Academy to allow 10 nominees in the top series categories. In addition, we would love to see uniformity in the acting races or a performer felt like a leading entry as opposed to a supporting, then we recognized as such. We also combined all of the reality, variety and documentary into each of their respective races. Not every type of show needs its own category.

Glastonbury Festival is officially back for another year! From Wednesday, June 21, to Sunday, June 25, festivalgoers are descending upon the fields of Somerset for days of camping, partying, hanging out with friends, and, of course, watching live performances from artists across all generations. While the weather is set to play ball and keep the sun shining, those attending will be donning their best summer festival outfits - and that includes celebrities.
We've already seen the likes of Maisie Williams, "Queen Charlotte"'s India Amarteifio, and Lily James don their best boho looks for the occasion, while attendees were treated to a surprise performance on the Pyramid Stage on Friday afternoon. Fans had been speculating about who the mystery set would be from, as it was held on the Glastonbury bill under the alias The Churnups, and much to fans' delight, it turned out to be the Foo Fighters. Just last May, the world got to experience a real-life coronation when King Charles ascended to the throne. Over on Shondaland’s new Netflix series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story,” there was a coronation too that needed to take place, and it was up to production designer David Ingram to create one.
When it came to pulling off Queen Charlotte’s (played by India Amarteifio) coronation, Ingram considers it fortunate that the show was shot in the U.K. “We could get the carriage,” Ingram says, stressing it was a replica one. “We could hire it and adapt it. We were able to reupholster it and repaint it.”
But the golden carriage was the least of his problems. The challenge was how to approach Westminster Abbey, traditionally used for real coronations, weddings and funerals, about how to shoot the scene.

This story about “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” stars India Amarteifio, Corey Mylchreest and Arsema Thomas first appeared in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Heavy is the head that wears the crown in “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” but the actors who star in the show carry the responsibility together.
As the title indicates, “Queen Charlotte” is a spinoff of Netflix’s wildly popular 19th-century period drama created by Shonda Rhimes. The prequel series was under a lot of pressure to follow up the more or less colorblind society established in “Bridgerton” — in addition to living up to the steaminess synonymous with the Regency-era show that’s based on Julia Quinn’s books.
It’s the story of how teenage Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz married King George of England and rose mightily to her royal position. She is played by India Amarteifio, alongside Corey Mylchreest as George...

Netflix debuted the first “Bridgerton” Season 3 images on Saturday during its fan-centric Tudum event, offering a first look at the new episodes of the wildly popular Netflix series based on Julia Quinn’s books.
Season 3 will deviate from the book series order by skipping Benedict’s love story (the crux of the third book) for that of Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton), which fans are dying to watch.
Season 2 saw Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) fall in love with Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) after first thinking that he should wed her sister Edwina (Charithra Chandran), who was proclaimed the season’s “incomparable.” At the end of Season 1, it was revealed that Penelope is actually Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews), the ton’s gossipmonger that always has something sensational printed on her morning pamphlets.

Arguably one of the most indelible images from the much-discussed Succession finale was that of two hands not quite interlocked. Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) holds out his palm for his wife, Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook), to take in the back of a car. She doesn’t quite grasp it, her hand limply resting in his. It’s a final image of a marriage that audiences witnessed oscillate between flirtation and vitriol during the course of the season.
Of the many threads running through Succession‘s final season, maybe the most captivating was the fractured relationship between Shiv and Tom, who went from playing a bizarre sexualized game called “bitey” to screaming at each other on a terrace during an election night party. By the finale, when Tom was named CEO of the company formerly run by Shiv’s father, their relationship was even more strained.

If you’ve become enamored with the love story at the center of Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, you’ve likely questioned just how much of the period drama is based in fact versus the fantastical mind of creator Shonda Rhimes, given the opening disclaimer from Lady Whistledown that the series “is not a history lesson” but rather “fiction inspired by fact.” While there’s no denying the masterful storytelling of Rhimes — the six-episode Bridgerton prequel was a runaway No. 1 among all titles on Netflix in its first week — the real-life story of the 18th century British royal provided great source material.

Millions of fans across the world have now watched Queen Charlotte and King George fall in love, against the odds, in the new spinoff of Netflix's immensely popular show "Bridgerton." And while their palpable chemistry and steamy love scenes have likely inspired a fresh slate of fan fiction, the onscreen lovers' tale already continues on the page, thanks to the woman responsible for the entire Bridgerton universe.
Just days after "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" began streaming on Netflix this month, author Julia Quinn's novelization of the drama series was published. Whereas Quinn's Bridgerton book series inspired the similarly titled show, Netflix adaptation's spinoff project served as the seed for the "Queen Charlotte" book.
"I think people sort of thought we were off in a room somewhere [writing]," Quinn tells Popsugar. "I got the scripts when [series creator Shonda Rhimes] was done. So she did her thing, and then I did my thing.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story introduced fans to the early days of the royal romance between King George (Corey Mylchreest) and Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio). The season is set decades before the main Bridgerton timeline begins and mainly centers on Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and her complicated marriage to the King of Great Britain and Ireland during the Georgian era. Although the series takes liberties in its storytelling of historical events and British royalty, the limited series has a surprising amount of truth. In the show, King George and Queen Charlotte marry within hours of meeting, and initially, their...

Like “Bridgerton,” “Queen Charlotte features orchestral covers of modern music, but an original composition by Kris Bowers kicks off the soundtrack during Charlotte and George’s wedding in the first episode.
Bowers co-wrote “A Feeling I’ve Never Been” with Tayla Parx based on the work of Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a Creole composer who was one of the first men of color to become known for his compositions, and who also happened to be an excellent fencer (and the subject of the 2022 film “Chevalier.”)
“We looked at a few pieces that inspired us and then came up with this seed of an idea that we then built into this larger piece, and so because we approached it with much more of a songwriting way rather than score, that’s why it belongs with some of those other [soundtrack] songs, but it was part of a larger idea that Alex...

In collaboration with longtime Shondaland costume designer Lyn Elizabeth Paolo, Shondaland and Allure Bridals have announced a first-ever bridal gown collection inspired by the opulence of Netflix’s Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte. The Bridgerton Weddings collection will bring to life Paolo’s exquisite Regency- and Georgian-era designs that have come to define the multifaceted Queen Charlotte in the Bridgerton prequel series. Paolo previously worked as a costume consultant on Bridgerton and is an intimate part of bringing the sumptuous Bridgerverse to life.
The idea behind the collection was initiated by Shonda Rhimes and Sandie Bailey, Shondaland’s chief innovation and design officer, when they approached Paolo with the opportunity to design a bridal gown collection influenced by Queen Charlotte’s era in the Bridgerton series.
“The Allure team have been spectacular in listening and sharing and creating together,” says Paolo, who’s worked with Shondaland for a decade on shows including Scandal,...

The historical world of "Queen Charlotte" - the first "Bridgerton" spinoff series - is so sumptuous that fans might wish to spend a day there. But the "Queen Charlotte" cast tells us there is one downside to wearing heavy, luxurious costumes on the gorgeous sets: It gets really hot!
"We got one of the hottest summers ever," Sam Clemmett, who plays Young Brimsley, tells Popsugar. One way they beat the heat was by having cooling tents right off set, where they could get a blast of cold air in between takes. Arsema Thomas, who plays young Lady Danbury, says she would have to "take off bits" of her costume when it was "extremely hot," but that the costume department also gave her "arm pit pads" right in her dresses to soak up the sweat. She calls herself a "very sweaty person."

The "Bridgerton" franchise is well-versed in producing heartthrobs. Take the first two seasons, for example. We are forever grateful to production company Shondaland for giving us a number of intimate scenes featuring leading men Regé-Jean Page and Jonathan Bailey. And the release of the "Bridgerton" prequel, "Queen Charlotte," has given us yet another actor to swoon over. Enter: Corey Mylchreest, who plays the young King George opposite India Amarteifio's Queen Charlotte.
The 25-year-old Londoner has already won legions of fans for his steamy turn as King George and his nuanced portrayal of the monarch's mental illness in the Netflix show. Loosely based on the real King George III, the "Bridgerton" spinoff, which was released on May 4, follows the story of Queen Charlotte's arranged marriage. While there are steamy sex scenes mixed with period drama attitude, Nylchreest is also swiftly becoming one to watch. "Corey Mylchreest is my main man now.

From Jennifer Coolidge and Brian Cox to Sheryl Lee Ralph and Henry Winkler, this year’s Emmy race is filled with past winners hoping to pick up another trophy from the TV Academy. However, there is also a plethora of talent entering the awards conversation for the first time, thanks to their work on series including “Queen Charlotte,” “Shrinking” and “The Last of Us.”
After the success of “Bridgerton,” it’s no surprise that Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff series, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” is filled with talented new faces. India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest portray Queen Charlotte and King George III while Arsema Thomas portrays the young Agatha Danbury.
Together, the three actors were able to find comfort in leaning on one another, which helped with the pressure of joining a series with an established audience.
“For a lot of us, this was our first big job so there was this shared camaraderie.

Dearest gentle reader: “Queen Charlotte” has been declared a jewel of Netflix’s spring season.
The “Bridgerton” spinoff had a regal first week of streaming, logging 148.28 million hours viewed on Netflix. The streamer announced the viewership numbers via its weekly Top 10 Global English Language TV Show viewership chart, dated May 1-7, which the good Queen unsurprisingly topped at No. 1; the limited series made that ascension with just four days of viewing, after dropping all episodes May 4.
If every viewer who started “Queen Charlotte” finished it during the week, the show would have received roughly 22 million viewers, according to Netflix’s estimates based on the show’s running time. That means the fictionalized King George’s coronation this weekend was likely watched by fewer people compared to that other coronation going on, although it did manage to surpass Charles and Camilla’s UK ratings at the very least.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a hit with viewers and critics alike, if online chatter is any indication. So, will this Netflix limited series actually be limited, or might fans get a second season? “There have been questions, but I’m not having conversations about it yet,” creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly. “I could live with Charlotte and George forever, but we told a very specific, closed-ended story that I think is a complete tale of this complicated, imperfect love. But I’m not ruling anything out because I never know.” The cast certainly seems game for more. India Amarteifio, who plays the younger Charlotte on the Bridgerton spinoff, told EW she “would absolutely love to do something in the realm again.” Netflix And Arsema Thomas, who plays Lady Danbury, said, “I never thought I could love like this until I had my own child.

Here’s how “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Bridgerton” creator Shonda Rhimes thinks about sex scenes: carefully.

Shonda Rhimes had no interest in writing a fairy-tale love story when she sat down to write “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Rather, the superstar producer, writer and 2017 Television Academy Hall of Fame Inductee had a very different goal when writing the prequel series to the Netflix period drama “Bridgerton.” In creating this series about the marriage between a young Charlotte) and King George III (Corey Mylchreest), Rhimes– who wrote or co-wrote five of the show’s six episodes– argues, “I wanted to tell a story about complicated love.” Watch more of Gold Derby’s exclusive video interview above.

With Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which debuted all six episodes on Thursday, we know exactly how the titular monarch’s marriage to King George III sparked the diverse world presented in Bridgerton.
It all began with an arranged marriage in the series premiere. A young, strong-willed Charlotte (played by India Amarteifio) was not happy to learn that her brother Adolphus (Tunji Kasim) set her up to marry the King of England (Corey Mylchreest). On the carriage ride to the palace, she threatened to leap from the moving vehicle and impale herself with her delicate and sharp corset made of whalebone.

“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” is not just a spin-off series of the Netflix hit.
Centering on the titular character as portrayed by Golda Rosheuvel in the original series, the prequel, which premiered Thursday, extends the frills and romance of the “Bridgerton” universe by taking audiences back to the origins of the epic love story between Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and King George (Corey Mylchreest) and the substantial challenges that threatened their happiness.
While Julia Quinn’s “Bridgerton” novels provided the basis for the highly-successful Netflix TV adaptation, series creator Shonda Rhimes went off book to build on the historical figure Queen Charlotte, whose coronation marks the start of “The Great Experiment,” a societal shift that integrates people of color into the fair-skinned ton. The first episode of “Queen Charlotte” features a dedication to Jacqueline Avant which might leave viewers scratching their heads.
The “Bridgerton” spin-off is now streaming on Netflix, with the end of the premiere episode featuring the words “In Memory of Jacqueline Avant”.
Contrary to usual dedications, which are tributes to late crew and cast members, Avant did not work on the series.
She was a prominent figure in the Black cultural world, as well as a philanthropist and community activist, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Mother to former United States ambassador Nicole Avant, who is married to Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, the late figure was shot and killed Dec. 2021 at the age of 81.
While Avant didn’t work directly on the series, she was a driving force behind the spin-off being created.
