Khruangbin have returned with “May Ninth,” the latest dreamy offering from their upcoming album, A LA Sala.
With soft, tender drums and an utterly warm guitar line from Mark Speer, “May Ninth” is a gentle and wistful ode to warmer days. “Oh what a dream to me/ Waiting for May to come,” Laura Lee and Speer sing in their respective octaves, conjuring the yearning early winter feeling where summer feels like lightyears away. Khruangbin may be longing for warmth and sunshine, but they create it from scratch on “May Ninth.” The song also arrives with an animated video helmed by Nathaniel Murphy, Jenny Lucia Mascia, and Jeremy Higgins; watch the official visualizer below.
“May Ninth” follows previous A LA Sala single “A Love International.” A LA Sala, which is out on April 5th via Dead Oceans, will be the trio’s fifth studio album. Their last effort was their collaborative LP with Vieux Farka Touré,...

Abramorama has acquired the global theatrical rights — with the exception of the U.K. and Ireland — and direct-to-consumers rights to “Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande,” the award-winning music documentary directed by Tim MacKenzie-Smith. Abramorama will launch its U.S. and Canadian theatrical release in early April, following its upcoming U.K. theatrical release.
“Abramorama is honored to bring Tim MacKenzie-Smith’s heartfelt documentary about the band Cymande to fans around the world. Their music has influenced artists of all genres and is as impactful today as it was when first released. Cymande continues to reach new fans and I think 2024 is going to be a huge year for the band, with sold out concerts around the world, a new record coming out soon, and the global release of their documentary,” Abramorama’s president and head of international distribution Evan Saxon said in a statement.

Khruangbin has announced their latest album A LA Sala, which is out on April 5th via Dead Oceans. To share a “first glimpse of the bountiful vistas powering the band’s vision,” as their press release states, the band has also revealed A LA Sala’s lead single, “A Love International.”
A LA Sala aims to be an “exercise in returning” for the psychedelic rock trio of bassist Laura Lee, drummer Donald Johnson, Jr., and guitarist Mark Speer. Recorded with no outside collaborators besides the band’s engineer Steve Christensen, the album sees Khruangbin in their truest form — aiming to establish “a reimagining and refueling of the group for a long haul ahead.”
To coincide with the release’s release, Khruangbin have announced a three-night residency at the Bowery Ballroom in New York from March 27th to the 29th. They are also set to play Bonnaroo this June.

The first trailer for "It's A Wonderful Knife" is here, and it has everything we never knew we needed from a holiday-set slasher: Laura Lee from "Yellowjackets," a killer who looks like Moon Knight, and ... Justin Long with a spray tan?! Long's involvement in the movie — playing chipper Mayor Waters — should make it a must-see anyway given his wild and watchable horror track record, but there are plenty of reasons to get stoked for "It's A Wonderful Knife."
The movie is the latest from "Freaky" writer Michael Kennedy, with "Tragedy Girls" filmmaker Tyler MacIntyre directing. That means "It's A Wonderful Knife" is almost certain to have a sharp comedic edge to it, something that's clear from the first seconds of the trailer when Mayor Waters, looking and sounding weirdly like a Martin Short character, campily declares, "I give you ... Christmas!" The festivities are soon cut short, though, when a...

Maybe refrain from tweeting on set while a strike is happening, Kim Kardashian.
On Friday, the reality show superstar decided to check in with her 74.9 million followers by writing “I’m on the set of AHS and we have some time between shows. What are you all up to????” Kardashian is starring in the 12th season of American Horror Story — one of several Ryan Murphy productions that have remained in production during the WGA strike.
Instead of getting the usual inquiries about her Skims, her fam and her dating status, she was immediately answered by striking writers — lots of them.
“Picketing, thanks for asking,” wrote one writer.
“Not being a scab,” said another.
“Can you post a cute selfie with the call sheet (advance schedule facing the camera)?” added a strike captain.
“Kim, this is a beautiful opportunity to show some solidarity and tell us if anyone is making script mods on site,...

The opening scene of Netflix's "Yellowjackets" begins with one of the most haunting TV sequences in recent memory. A dark-haired girl in a nightgown runs through a frozen forest, looking scared for her life - and for good reason. As she runs, a pit opens up beneath her feet, and she falls in. The next frames show her limbs nailed to the ground with sticks, and then she's getting hung up by her feet and flayed while a bunch of people clad in animal skins look on. Eventually, after the girl's remains are placed in front of an antler-clad figure, the group devours her.
The specter of that scene haunts all of "Yellowjackets," which tells the story of a girls' soccer team who crash-land in a forest and are forced to survive there for 19 months. Interspersing that story with scenes set 25 years later - when...

Showtime's "Yellowjackets" is about a group of teen girls (and a few boys and men) whose plane crashes in the middle of nowhere while they're on their way to a national soccer tournament. Some members of the team perish in the crash, while others die in the 19 months between the crash and when they were rescued. The very first episode of the show teased that the survivors would eventually resort to cannibalism to survive - which also involves some scary-looking rituals.
Since the series occurs on two timelines - 1996 and the present day - we already know which of the Yellowjackets survived the woods and the few who didn't as season two continues. Some of the characters that people assumed died were revealed to be alive at the end of season one, while the fates of others remain a mystery.

Depending on how online you are, you either met this week's big "Yellowjackets" revelation that there's at least one underground room in the forest with an "A-ha!" or a "What the hell?!" Either one is totally valid, as the show has hinted at the existence of some sort of underground system for two seasons — but has done so mostly through dreams and visions.
When Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) spotted a green, mossy tree in the woods that was venting hot air, it actually wasn't the first time we'd seen an out-of-place bit of greenery. In the season premiere, Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) and Travis (Kevin Alves) passed a much smaller (but equally green) stump but didn't put two and two together to realize that growing moss meant warmth and moisture were coming up from underground. Theory-loving fans of the series did,...

"I can't wait for you, Tai. Literally, I don't have that kind of time ... I have cancer."
This is the first thing Van tells Taissa after the duo kisses for the first time in decades. Despite Taissa being married with a family, this is a kiss that "Yellowjackets" fans have been dying to see from the moment it was announced that Lauren Ambrose had been cast as adult Van. Her adulthood served as evidence that the teenage goalie played by Liv Hewson, whom so many fans had fallen in love with, was going to make it out of the woods alive.
However, much like the reveal that Shauna's baby was not a victim of cannibalism because it was stillborn, the discovery that Van is diagnosed with terminal cancer as an adult is almost harder to process than had she been sacrificed to Lottie's tree gods.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 6, “Qui.”]
“Yellowjackets” may be a twisted TV drama, but it’s tough to build a case that it pulls the rug out from under its audience. More often than not, things go how you’d expect them to, in a world where the ultimate twist is the one taken by fate when a flight crashed in the Canadian wilderness. Everything that follows, tragic as it is, has an inevitable kind of logic to it.
Episode 6, “Qui,” directed by Liz Garbus and written by Karen Joseph Adcock & Ameni Rozsa, is a crystal clear reminder of that. Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) is in labor, and the inevitability of her pregnancy brings a fierce reality check crashing down on the cabin. It ends up being a checkpoint, revealing every character’s truth in how they respond to the situation. Surprisingly, Misty (Samantha Hanratty) panics; as much as Hanratty embodies a smart little sociopath,...

Spoilers for "Yellowjackets" follow.
The dual timelines of "Yellowjackets," set 25 years apart, show both how a high school girls' soccer team was stranded in the Canadian Wilderness and how they cope with that experience as adults. This structure means we already know the main cast's fate, at least to a point. In season 1, the presence of Shauna, Taissa, Natalie, Misty, and Travis in the 2021 timeline confirmed they got out of the wilderness alive. Two supporting characters in the 1996 timeline, Laura Lee and Jackie, didn't show up in the present. Sure enough, it's because they're dead.
However, season 1 ended with the reveal that Lottie Matthews (Courtney Eaton) was still alive, though she was never even mentioned in the 2021 timeline. Come season 2, she's now a regular in both timelines (played by Simone Kessell as an adult). The bigger surprise in season 2 is that Vanessa "Van" Palmer (Liv Hewson) survived too. She got...

The girls of "Yellowjackets" went looking for a miracle in the latest episode of Showtime's teen horror survival series, and the one they found out turned out to be a lot different than the one they bargained for. When Lottie (Courtney Eaton) and Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) left for a hunt that doubled as a test of Lottie's burgeoning supernatural abilities, the pair returned home without a juicy moose to share. Yet by the episode's end, Van (Liv Hewson) and Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) made their own triumphant return with another, hopefully, less edible surprise: Javi.
Javi (Luciano Leroux) went missing way back in the penultimate episode of "Yellowjackets" season 1 when he caught the girls in the throes of mushroom-amplified savagery during Doomcoming. Warned to run from the momentarily predatory teammates, the youngest survivor followed orders, and we haven't seen him since. Natalie...

[Editor’s note: This review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 4, “Old Wounds.”]
The Yellowjackets may not have made it to nationals, but in Season 2, Episode 4, the competition is on.
As the winter of their discontent wears on, the stranded high school students and their actively disassociating coach (Steven Kreuger) are running out of food. The situation is so dire that people are ostensibly stealing raw bear meat from the food stores to eat more than their allotted share (or are they? More on this later). It doesn’t help that the group’s only two hunters can’t find any fresh game, or that they didn’t even catch the group’s main meals: the bear that bowed to Lottie (Courtney Eaton) and gave its life in Season 1 and the birds that mysteriously fell on their roof just one episode prior.

Last week's shocking episode finally brought cannibalism into the fold, and now our survivors are dealing with the aftermath after feasting on their barbequed queen bee, Jackie. Based on the skeletal hand shown, these kids picked her corpse clean like vultures. I say "kids," because the sole adult, Coach Ben, did not partake, and is having a rough go of it psychologically. Episode 3 opens with Coach Ben finally getting a flashback, having dinner with his very '90s boyfriend Paul (and his singular left earring). In reality, Ben is hiding out in his room and disassociating from the world, still rocking his "Holy s***, they're gonna eat me when I die" face from the last episode.
Nat and Taissa are the first to have post-cannibalism clarity, but there's one problem; Taissa doesn't remember eating Jackie. "Something ate her," she panics. "Taissa, we ate her,...

Female friendships are complicated.
On ‘Yellowjackets,” Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) loves, envies, and resents best friend Jackie (Ella Purnell) right until her untimely death while stranded in the Canadian Rockies. She goes on to marry Jackie’s boyfriend, hold on to her old soccer uniform, and during a moment of hunger, fascination, and overwhelming guilt during the Season 2 premiere — why not all three? — ate Jackie’s ear.
Unfortunately, things only get murkier.
In Episode 2, “Edible Complex,” written by showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco and directed by Ben Semanoff, the hallucinated Dead Jackie bit starts to grow stale (no pun intended). Content note: this article contains a detailed account of a man's death by accidental suicide as depicted in the television show "Yellowjackets."
Episode two of "Yellowjackets"'s second season might have answered one of the series' biggest mysteries: how did Travis die? In season one, Nat (played by Juliette Lewis as an adult) is bereft when she discovers Travis has died of an apparent suicide. She's convinced foul play must have been involved because she and Travis promised each other they'd never do that. But by the end of the season, she seems to finally accept that's what happened - even though the mysterious Yellowjackets symbol was inexplicably present at the scene.
But that all gets flipped around when the cult, run by Lottie (Simone Kessell as an adult), kidnaps Nat. In episode two, Nat and Lottie talk, and Lottie says she was there for Travis's death. Here's how she says it all went down.

There are countless tropes to describe the ways that women have been objectified, devalued, and underappreciated on screen, inspiring an overcorrection with the development of what we call the "strong, female character." Suddenly, as a means to even the scales of the way female characters have been historically sidelined in favor of male protagonists in film and television, there was an explosion of women on screen that fit under this archetype and gave women around the world heroes of their own. Unfortunately, the development of the "strong female character" created a paradox of its own, as it renders women into a different type of stock character and rejects the complex personalities of actual women. I am a staunch defender of women's rights, but I'm an even more vocal defender of women's wrongs, and no show on television has been better about exploring...

Nearly a year after Mike Aragon left Twitch to become the CEO of Lululemon’s interactive Mirror product, his replacement has been named. Laura Lee, whose former roles include gigs at YouTube, NBCUniversal, and MTV, is taking over as Twitch’s Chief Content Officer.
Lee will report to Twitch President Dan Clancy. In a statement shared by Variety, Clancy said that Lee will “define our content strategy” in order to help streamers “build vibrant communities on our service.”
Lately, community has become one of Twitch’s major themes. The platform is likely responding to pressure from YouTube, which has poached several top stars from its Amazon-owned competitor. YouTube has signed streamers who typically collaborate with one another — when multiple members of those communities make the switch, the stragglers feel pressure to move on as well.

Netflix debuted a trailer for its upcoming three-part docuseries, “Naomi Osaka,” debuting July 16.
“No one really knows all the sacrifices you make,” the titular athlete narrates in the trailer opening.
Academy Award-nominated director Garrett Bradley covers a two-year period in which Osaka defends grand slam titles, finds her voice and navigates personal challenges on a public stage. The intimate three-episode series chronicles Osaka’s hectic training and travel schedule as she finds time to be with friends and family and explore her Haitian and Japanese roots. It launches just one week before her run at the Tokyo Olympics begins.
“The series is about Naomi’s journey, within a snapshot of her life, but it’s also about life’s purpose, about personal worth, about the courage that it takes to allow one’s personal values to inform their work and vice versa,” Bradley said. “More than anything, I’d hope...

Volume One of Shoyer’s Outbreak trilogy has already injected literally new blood into the market. In The Hunger, readers were captivated as a seemingly innocent day at the zoo led to a violent and world-threatening zombie apocalypse. In volume two, The Mutation, Shoyer further explores the world that he created...
