Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
Welcome back to the world of “Bridgerton,” the Netflix superhit that gets everyone invested in Regency-era romance by making it clear that the only way empire-waist gowns work is when they’re torn off by hereditary nobility. As it’s been a while since our last opportunity to mingle with the Lords and Ladies of the ton, here’s a refresher on who’s who (and who’s doing who) in London town this season.
I. The Bridgertons
The Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and her children stand at the center of London society, partially because their unlimited funds make them a financially desirable family to marry into, but also because they’re all the kind of hot that makes one stop and go “No,...

Bradley Walsh’s ITV co-star has addressed claims that their show has been cancelled.
Last week, it was claimed that comedy drama series The Larkins, starring Walsh and Joanna Scanlan, would come to an end due to low ratings.
While ITV is yet to officially announce the show’s cancellation, one of its stars shared a message in response to the claims on social media.
“Thanks for watching #thelarkins,” Tony Gardner wrote.
In the series, Gardner, whose other credits include Last Tango in Halifax and My Parents Are Aliens, plays the wealthy Alec Norman.
He continued: “Made lots of memories and new friends. Can’t ask for any more than that.”
The Larkins, which debuted in 2021, is inspired by He Bates’ novel The Darling Buds of May. The book received its own TV adaptation in the 1990s.
A third series of The Larkins has been filmed, and will be broadcast later this year.

Warning: contains spoilers for Bridgerton season one.
December 2020 was a hundred years ago at least, so we can all be forgiven for not quite remembering everything that happened in Bridgerton’s first season. Daphne and the Duke were but one spoke in the show’s fancy wheel of romance, intrigue, scandal and pastries shaped like swans. There was also the fake-French modiste and the saucy opera singer, the gambling Lord murdered over his debts, the revelation of who was behind the titillating pen of anonymous social commentator Lady Whistledown, Queen Charlotte’s sad marriage, the nasty Cowpers, the nice boxer and his wife, and much more.
With season two out now, here’s a memory-jog on the major stories you’ll need to recall. Spoilers.

Viewers saw Anthony Bridgerton's backside in season one, but upcoming episodes promise to show an even more intimate view of the viscount, the Bridgerton sibling at the center of season two. The 2020 debut season of the Julia Quinn adaptation focused on Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), and her big brother Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) functioned mostly as her much (much) more experienced protector. His friendships with other men in the Ton and his affairs with those of lower rank, like opera singer Siena Rosso (Sabrina Bartlett), had soured his opinions of the bachelors pursuing Daphne. He acted like an overbearing father in the absence of their actual father, who died when they were...

Netflix's biggest series ever is closing in on a comeback.
The streamer on Saturday dropped a first-look at Bridgerton Season 2, and it's everything we hoped it would be.
Simone Ashley (Sex Education) was announced as the female lead for the second season, to star opposite Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton).
The first teaser shows Anthony meeting with Ashley's character, and the latter is less than thrilled with Anthony's comments on his future wife.
Yes, Anthony has some high demands, and yes, there's going to be a lot of sudsy drama.
It will be fun to see this new love story take place, and it looks very different from Daphne and Simon's road to love in the first season, which is very good in our book.
Charithra Chandran, Shelley Conn (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Calam Lynch, and Rupert Young (The White Queen) have also been added to the cast in...

Production on Bridgerton Season 2 is not going smoothly.
The Netflix juggernaut has been shut down for the second time in a week due to another positive Covid test.
Deadline first reported the news, while also confirming that there is no definite return to production.
The series was first shut down on Thursday for 24 hours after a crew member tested positive, but it was brought to a halt again on Friday due to another positive test.
The indefinite hiatus is concerning because it could suggest that a cast member tested positive for Covid-19.
Bridgerton burst onto screens in December and quickly became a huge success for Netflix, going on to snag a three-season renewal and an order for a spinoff.
Netflix declared Bridgerton to be a success story by saying it was watched by a record 82 million Netflix households around the world and towered above the streamer's other offerings.

Much of the awards attention for “Bridgerton” has gone to leading man Rege-Jean Page, who earned a SAG Award nomination and even won an MTV Movie and TV Award for his role as the dashing duke, Simon Basset. But as we learned from other shows with sprawling British casts like “Game of Thrones” and “Downton Abbey,” the Emmys often shower prestige dramas with copious acting noms. That could be good news for Jonathan Bailey, who has strong odds for a nomination for Best Drama Supporting Actor.

Regé-Jean Page may not be a part of the Bridgerton Season 2 cast, but Simon Basset will not be forgotten.
Phoebe Dynevor, who plays Daphne on the Netflix hit, has opened up about how Page's exit will impact the second season.
As you will recall, Daphne and Simon were very much together at the close of Bridgerton Season 1, with the pair welcoming a newborn son into the world.
"I think he'll definitely be referred to a lot," the actress explained in a chat with The Wrap.
"I think we'll see the baby. And we'll just focus more on [Daphne's] relationship with the Bridgerton Family."
As previously reported, Bridgerton Season 2 will focus on Anthony Bridgerton's search for love.
"It's definitely different," Dynevor said of the sophomore run.
"And I've said it before, but I think the fans who have read the books and know the books are aware that every season will focus on a different sibling's journey.

The actor also explained that he's chatted with series creator Chris Van Dusen about where Anthony Bridgerton's storyline will go on Season 2.
"I just like to have an idea of what the emotional journey will be. But it all really made sense to me, Anthony, from the get-go," he said before opening up about how his character was perceived by his close friends when they watched the show.

Bridgerton has blossomed into a royal treat for Netflix.
The series has now been named the biggest launch of any series in the history of the streamer.
In its first 28 days, Bridgerton Season 1 amassed views from 82 million Netflix households across the globe, proving to be a bigger hit than the streamer first thought.
The huge announcement comes weeks after Netflix said the show was projected to reach 63 million Netflix households in its first 28 days, so the strong word of mouth and strong reception seems to have helped the show vault even further.
The initial report put the series behind only The Witcher Season 1, Stranger Things Season 3, Money Heist Part 4, and Tiger King atop the streamer's original series launches, but now Bridgerton is well ahead of all of those shows.
It's worth noting that Netflix doesn't release every statistic with its shows, meaning that these numbers come directly from the streamer,...

Just as the ton was settling down following last week’s “Bridgerton” Season 2 renewal, Netflix has revealed Wednesday another piece of juicy gossip about the Shonda Rhimes-produced period romance: “Bridgerton” is now Netflix’s biggest series ever, crushing even the streaming service’s own launch viewership projections.
According to Netflix, a record 82 million households around the world chose to watch “Bridgerton” in the first 28 days since its Christmas Day 2020 launch, the time period Netflix focuses on when sharing its own viewership statistics, making it the No. 1 show in Netflix history in that metric. Netflix counts a view whenever someone watches at least two uninterrupted minutes of a show or movie.
Additionally, Netflix says “Bridgerton” has ranked No. 1 overall in 83 countries including the US, UK, Brazil, France, India and South Africa, and made the Top 10 in all 190 countries where Netflix is available except Japan.

Netflix’s mighty algorithms were no match for the global pop culture phenomenon that Bridgerton has become. The Regency-era romance, already renewed for a second season, not just exceeded Netflix’s original viewership projections, it blew them out of the water.
The final numbers are in, and Season 1 of Bridgerton was watched by a record 82 million households around the world (partially or in its entirety.) That is a whopping 19M households higher than the four-week projection Netflix issued 10 days into the Shondaland series’ run (63 million), at the time the streamer’s fifth biggest launch in history.
Bridgerton, whose massive wave of popularity is showing no signs of subsiding, is now Netflix’s biggest series ever by a wide margin. It pushed down to No.2 previous record holder, fantasy hit The Witcher (76M in its first 28 days).

Netflix’s glamorous period series “Bridgerton” dropped last month, giving romance fans a gorgeous eight-episode escape from the pandemic. And if you’ve already started to binge the series — or are starting your re-binge following Thursday’s Season 2 renewal — you probably noticed that accompanying the stunning costumes, lavish ballroom scenes and witty dialogue is a soundtrack filled with classical covers of modern songs.
It might be a little hard to put your finger on exactly what song you’re listening to, as the “Bridgerton” covers truly make these pop tracks sound like they were made for string quartets. But don’t worry, because TheWrap has the complete soundtrack listing for all the covers below.
Based on Julia Quinn’s romance novel series of the same name, “Bridgerton” follows Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family, as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market.

Netflix is in it for the long haul with its adaptation of the Bridgerton novels.
The streamer on Thursday confirmed that a second season would be made, focusing on the second novel, fueling the theory that all of the novels will be adapted.
This also means that Lord Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey will take center stage in the new season.
The first season, which premiered on Netflix on Christmas Day, focused on Daphne Bridgerton’s (Phoebe Dynevor) debut on the marriage market and her explosive courtship with committed bachelor, the Duke of Hastings (played by Regé-Jean Page).
While there were some questions about when production could get underway due to the pandemic, Netflix has confirmed it will be in the spring, which could hint at another Christmas launch for the series.

And narrating all the dramatic events throughout Season 1 is Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews), a mysterious member of London’s high society who writes a regular column detailing the most scandalous gossip from the coming-out season.
Though she plays a pivotal role in “Bridgerton,” it’s not until the final moments of the Season 1 finale that viewers find out the identity of Lady Whistledown — but boy, is it worth the wait. Shonda Rhimes' first Netflix original series is already a hit.
The streamer announced Monday that the royal drama is on track to be sampled by over 63 million households in its first four weeks of release.
This would put the series behind only The Witcher Season 1, Stranger Things Season 3, Money Heist Part 4, and Tiger King atop the streamer's original series launches.
It's certainly a big number, but we need to remember that Netflix reports on these numbers based on subscribers who have watched at least two minutes of the content.
This means that it's possible only those few minutes were watched, but still, this does signal that there was a lot of sampling for the series, which bowed on Christmas Day.

“Bridgerton” has showered Netflix with Christmas cheer — and heaps of viewers.
The streaming service projects viewership of the steamy Shondaland period piece will surpass 63 million households within its first 28 days. That’s the time period Netflix focuses on when sharing its own viewership statistics.

“Bridgerton” has reached No. 1 overall on Netflix in 76 countries. As a matter of fact, it has made the Top 10 in all 190 countries that Netflix is available in, save one: Japan.
The first Netflix original series from Shonda Rhimes and her production company Shondaland, “Bridgerton” was created by Chris Van Dusen, who is the showrunner. Betsy Beers is also an executive producer.

Whilst writing a recap of Netflix’s Bridgerton, it is rather difficult not to assume the voice of Julie Andrews in one’s own mind. She is the voice of Lady Whistledown, after all. And although the true identity of the scandal sheet scribbler isn’t revealed until the eighth and final episode of Season 1, in many ways Andrews’ narration sets the tone for this high-end version of Gossip Girl.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that wherever Shonda Rhimes hangs up her shingle, juicy television follows. Even when the proceedings border on being silly enough to interrupt our suspension of disbelief, the fact remains that we’re having too much fun to care. Bridgerton, the first series out of the gate in Rhimes’ blockbuster production deal with Netflix (reported to be worth $150 million, but possibly north of $300 million in reality), carries this DNA in its heart. A frothy romp through the high society of Regency-era England (that’s early-...

For her first Netflix series, Shonda Rhimes is stirring up scandal with minimal budget constraints and the results are, well, all over the super-sumptuous Bridgerton trailer.
Based on Julia Quinn’s novels, the eight-episode Shondaland series — which drops on Christmas Day — follows 19th century heroine Daphne (Younger‘s Phoebe Dynevor), the oldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family, as she seeks a husband in Regency London. All the while, Daphne and her potential suitors live under Lady Whistledown’s (Julie Andrews) omniscient scrutiny.

“All is fair in love and war.”
These are the first words heard in the official trailer for Netflix’s newest drama series, “Bridgerton,” and they certainly set the scene. They are spoken by none other than Julie Andrews, who serves as the series’ faceless narrator –- the ever-mysterious Lady Whistledown, who also writes a gossip column highlighting the scandalous lives of London’s elite.
With continued narration from Whistledown, the trailer introduces Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family, and the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), a bachelor with a bad reputation. As Daphne attends balls and other high society events, she can’t seem to escape the Duke – or the biting criticism of Whistledown, who declares Daphne ineligible.
So, the two team up and enter a faux romance, with Daphne hoping to prove Whistledown wrong and the Duke wanting to escape the mothers...
