The lack of Latine representation in film today is disappointing when you consider Latines accounted for 29 percent of moviegoers in the States in 2020. And here's a fun fact you probably didn't know: Latines also represent 26 percent of horror movie audiences, compared with 20 percent for other genres, according to a recent survey. Still, there's a marked lack of Latine actors starring in horror films. But Melissa Barrera's career has been challenging that. The horror and suspense queen has starred in several films within the genre in just the past few years, including "Scream," "Scream IV," "Bed Rest," and "Your Monster."
Her latest role is as Joey in "Abigail," a gory vampire film released April 19 about a group of criminals assigned to kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of a crooked millionaire. Like a lot of Barrera's roles, Joey isn't your typical in-your-face Latina character. She's a war veteran with a dream to...

Melissa Barrera was expected to reprise her role of Sam Carpenter for Scream 7, but the actress was fired by Spyglass media last year after the studio alleged that she made anti-Semitic comments on social media following the attack in Israel and the invasion of Gaza. Well, the actress has sparked more controversy in the last week, leading her representatives at WME and Sugar23 to wonder whether they should drop her as a client.
Melissa Barrera posted a link in her Instagram bio that prompted followers to donate money to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. The group has been providing aid to Palestinian refugees for decades, but allegations recently emerged that some employees are members of Hamas and that 12 of them actually took part in the October 7th attacks. This has led multiple countries to put a pause on funding for the group,...

“Scream” franchise star Hayden Panettiere has spoken out about Melissa Barrera’s firing from the horror film series, calling her controversial exit “very unfair and upsetting.”
Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI,” was fired from the upcoming “Scream 7” after her social media posts about Palestine were deemed antisemitic by Spyglass, the production banner behind the hit horror franchise.
Spyglass said in a statement to Variety at the time: “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
“After she [spoke out], then a whole bunch of other actors and people in the industry started to do the same thing, right?” Panettiere said in a recent interview with The Messenger. “It was almost like she just did it earlier than everyone else.

Panettiere said she thought her co-star was singled out.
“After she [spoke out], then a whole bunch of other actors and people in the industry started to do the same thing, right? It was almost like she just did it earlier than everyone else.”
Barrera later called dismissal was “shocking,” since she’d been playing the lead role of Sam Carpenter since 2022’s Scream V.

Jasmin Savoy Brown’s future in the Scream franchise is up in the air after the actress said the movies’ studio, Spyglass, hasn’t been in touch about her potentially returning.
The Yellowjackets actress, who appeared in 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, spoke to Entertainment Tonight recently about her time with the franchise and the cast’s most recent — and unplanned — reunion.
When asked about whether she’d return for the next installment, which lost leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as well as director Christopher Landon late last year, Brown shared no one had reached out to her. “I haven’t gotten a call, so I think if you want to ask Spyglass what they’re doing, you can,” she said. “I haven’t gotten a call.”
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Spyglass for comment.
Brown’s statement follows the departure of Landon, who revealed on Dec.

We understand that Ortega’s exit from the next Scream was discussed before the actors strike. A script for Scream VII is not ready yet, and the Primetime Emmy nominee has to head to Ireland in April to shoot the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday which will go into the summer.

The entertainment industry is abuzz with the news of Melissa Barrera, famed for her role as Sam Carpenter in the ‘Scream’ franchise, being dropped from the upcoming Scream 7. This decision, according to a statement from Spyglass Media Group and reported by Variety, is due to Barrera’s social media posts related to the Israeli-Hamas conflict, which were seen as crossing the line into hate speech.
Spyglass Media Group took a firm stance, declaring zero tolerance for antisemitism or hate incitement. They specifically pointed to Barrera’s posts as containing problematic references, labeling them as hate speech. This move by Spyglass highlights the sensitive nature of political and social commentary in today’s entertainment landscape.
Christopher Landon, the incoming director for ‘Scream 7,’ shared his reaction to this development in a now-deleted tweet. His message hinted at frustration and a sense of helplessness, suggesting the decision was beyond his control.

:a[In The Heights]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/in-the-heights/' } actor Melissa Barrera, who for the last few years has been playing Sam Carpenter in the :a[Scream]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/scream-2022/' } franchise, has been dropped from the next film by production company Spyglass Media. The reason, according to Spyglass? Social media posts by Barrera that supported the Palestinian side of the Israeli-Hamas conflict and that, it was claimed, verged into hate speech.
“Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,” a Spyglass spokesperson told Variety.
Barrera has yet to comment on the matter beyond her posts, but her firing is just the latest example of the incredible divide in Hollywood over the issue of the conflict.

Melissa Barrera has been dropped from the upcoming Scream VII due to her outspoken social media support of Palestine amidst the Israel-Hamas war.
According to Variety, Deadline, and others, Barrera was booted by the production company behind the Scream franchise, Spyglass Media, with sources citing her recent Instagram posts and Stories voicing anti-Zionist, pro-Palestinian messages as the reason why. Since the conflict broke out last month, the actor has consistently been sharing media depicting inhumane actions of the American and Israeli governments, condemning the oppression of the Palestinian people, and calling for a ceasefire.
Among the (many) posts and Stories Barrera has shared include descriptions of Israel as a settler-colonial, apartheid state guilty of ethnic cleansing. Some of her posts even assert that Israel’s response to the Hamas attacks may constitute a genocide, and quite a few allude to misinformation in “Western media” coverage of the conflict, encouraging...

Scream and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera will reportedly not be returning for the upcoming Scream 7, it was first reported in this week’s digital issue of Variety magazine.
THR adds, “Filming had not begun, and development had been slow amid the actors and writers strikes. Now, Spyglass is expected to recalibrate plans following Barrera.”
Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter is the leading member of the “Core Four,” the new group of survivor characters that have been leading this latest trilogy for the Scream franchise.
Sam Carpenter has been a particularly important character for the saga as she’s the daughter of original Scream killer Billy Loomis, and Barrerra was expected to return for Scream 7 alongside Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Jasmine Savoy Brown. Ortega’s involvement in Scream 7 is also up in the air at this time, with no confirmation she’ll be returning.

Melissa Barrera is no longer starring in Scream VII. The actor was dropped from the project after a series of social media posts in the wake of the Israel-Hamas War.
“Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp,” she wrote in one post on Instagram stories. “Cornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water … People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. This Is Genocide & Ethnic Cleansing.”
A spokesperson for Spyglass, the company behind the Scream franchise, issued a statement after the initial publication of this article: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

The fifth installment of the "Scream" franchise was a huge shakeup, with the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence ("Ready or Not") taking the reins from the legendary Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had an impossible task ahead of them — marrying the previous four films featuring Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Dewey Reilly (David Arquette) with a brand new cast of characters now known as the "Core Four," comprised of Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding).
"Scream VI" was a bit of a reset for the series, with Neve Campbell leaving the franchise because, as she explained, "I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to this franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years." With...

Stephen King once wrote that the "last reason for reading horror: it's a rehearsal for death. It's a way to get ready." I agree with that statement and believe it applies to watching horror, as well as reading it. Sure, there's something to be said about how watching people scream and die in terrible ways probably satisfies the morbid curiosity that resides in the more primordial parts of our brains. But King's quote serves as a more profound (and socially acceptable) explanation for our attraction to the stories about fictional characters shuffling off this mortal coil, and how they allow us to come into contact with the great beyond.
From a safe distance, that is.
However, for an unlucky number of actors and film crew members, death got a little too close during the making of several horror movies, whether it was freak accidents, production team negligence, or tyrannical directors pushing their crew to extremes.

The best thing about the "Scream" franchise is that, as far as most fans are concerned, there are no downright awful entries. Some movies are weaker than others, sure, but no movie was so bad that the series' creators had no choice but to reboot the entire thing. This is a series that builds on itself, embracing continuity and refusing to allow viewers to discard any of its entries. The "Star Wars" sequels pleased nobody when they tried to make "Rise of Skywalker" serve as a reversal of every controversial decision made in the previous film, but the "Scream" series has never made any such cowardly mistake. Every sequel matters in this franchise, no matter what. No movie is going to apologize for anything the last movie did.
Still, not all "Scream" movies are created equal. Some of them have tone problems, or lackluster killer reveals. Some of them are...

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett resurrected the Scream franchise with two very successful installments, but it seems that they won’t be back for Ghostface’s next massacre. It was confirmed yesterday that Christopher Landon, best known for Happy Death Day, Freaky, and We Have a Ghost, had signed on to direct Scream 7.
The news that Christopher Landon would be directing Scream 7 was certainly exciting for many horror fans and the director took to Twitter (or X rather) to give his two-cents. “Just a big, heart-felt thanks to all the #scream fans for welcoming me into the fold,” Landon wrote. “Horror has been my passion all my life. Deadline has reported that Melissa Barrera is set to reunite with Radio Silence for an untitled monster thriller set up at Universal.
Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett will direct the project which was scripted by Stephen Shields, with revisions by Guy Busick. Radio Silence started developing the project after the success of last year’s Scream, but when Paramount scrambled to get Scream VI going as quickly as possible, they put it on the back burner. Deadline’s report states that it “became evident pretty quickly that Barrera was the perfect fit for the role following two successful shoots with the rising star and offered her the part.” Melissa Barrera has starred in the last two Scream movies as Sam Carpenter.

The Scream franchise was given a new life by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella for the first time since Wes Craven’s Scream 4 in 2010. The year 2022 mixed legacy characters with new ones for future Ghostfaces to hunt. There’s a variety of places that the Scream horror franchise would go from here, so why not space?
