“It hurts because I know I can do better than that. That being my last look to leave on hurts,” said Sabrina Spanta in her exit interview at the end of “Project Runway” season 19 episode 5, “Go for the Gold … Sequin.” It was her third time getting a low score from the judges, and two of those low scores, including this week’s, were in team challenges. It’s always especially tough to go out on a team challenge because often the collaboration with another designer ends up compromising your individual vision. Do you think she deserved to go home?
“Go for the Gold” was a client challenge where the designers were randomly paired off to create looks for Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski to wear during their 2022 Winter Olympics coverage. One member of each team would create Weir’s look, and the other would design for Lipinski. Spanta was teamed up with Prajje Oscar Jean-Baptiste,...

On last week’s fourth episode of “Project Runway” season 19, Gigi Hadid was the guest judge in a “Flower Power” challenge that saw the 13 designers create custom floral prints for a look that would emphasize the versatility of flowers. Darren Apolonio fell to the bottom of the pack again for failing to convey his concept in a look that made sense or showed the judges anything new from him, and was eliminated. Tonight the remaining 12 were paired off for a sequins-focused challenge with Olympian guest clients Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir.

Sometimes no news is good news, but on “Project Runway” that can be a double-edged sword. Coral Castillo is the only designer left in season 19 who has yet to get a critique from the judges. That means she has never designed a look that has been on the bottom, but it also means she hasn’t impressed them enough to be at the top. And she hasn’t gotten guidance from the panel one way or the other, which could lead her astray in successive challenges. Could she be out tonight?
That’s what our users think. “Runway” fans have been placing their bets for episode five all week here in our predictions center, and they give Castillo 37/10 odds of being sent home. She’s followed by Zayden Skipper with 9/2 odds. Skipper got off to a strong start this season, creating one of the top designs in week two’s “#Streetwear” challenge.

Setting yourself apart from your fellow designers is the key to winning “Project Runway,” so of course prevailing in the week-to-week design challenges is important along the way. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so scroll down to see the looks that won each challenge this season, and decide for yourself if they really deserved such high praise.

On last week’s third episode of “Project Runway” season 19, night descended in the studio as the designers created glamorous masquerade gowns for a “hauntingly chic” runway. Chasity Sereal came out on top in the challenge, lavishly praised by guest judge Taraji P. Henson for what she called “hot sex on a platter.” Kenneth Barlis didn’t fare so well, confusing the judges with a snake-inspired “Batman costume,” according to Nina Garcia.

Re-defining a "form of suppression" through fashion. Project Runway designer Sabrina Spanta showed off her "fresh take" on a traditional burqa with a very untraditional floral bodysuit, complete with skin-tight floral patterns placed specifically over the female genitals. In an exclusive clip from tonight's episode, airing Thursday, Nov. 4, mentor Christian Siriano gushed over Sabrina's unique design. "I love it! That idea of a modern burqa I think is really interesting and can be very special, very powerful," Christian applauded. To Sabrina, the ensemble was a natural next step in the competition. "I'm tired of being safe," she...

It takes a lot to win “Project Runway.” It’s hard enough just not to lose every week since the designers only get one or two days to create an entire look from scratch. So there’s no shame in having an off day. Nevertheless, these are the worst looks of season 19 according to the judges. Did they get it right by picking these as the poorest designs? Or did you think any of them were criminally underrated? Scroll down to see the losing looks, updating each week as the season progresses.
The season started with 16 designers: Octavio Aguilar, Darren Apolonio, Kenneth Barlis, Caycee Black, Bones Jones, Coral Castillo, Meg Ferguson, Prajje Oscar Jean-Baptiste, Kristina Kharlashkina, Katie Kortman, Shantall Lacayo, Chasity Sereal, Sabrina Spanta, Aaron Michael Steach, Zayden Skipper, and Anna Zhou.

On last week’s second episode of “Project Runway” season 19, a “#Streetwear” challenge threw the design studio into chaos when Meg Ferguson became openly hostile to Kenneth Barlis over his request to switch models with him for cultural representation reasons. The verbal altercation escalated and reverberated throughout the studio, culminating in Meg’s decision to voluntarily leave the competition. Series judges Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell and Elaine Welteroth, joined by host and mentor Christian Siriano this season, all agreed that after Meg’s exit none of the other designers should be eliminated.

“Project Runway” made a triumphant return for its 19th season by embracing the spirit of revival in New York City with a “colorful” premiere on October 14. Series judges Nina Garcia, Brandon Maxwell and Elaine Welteroth joined host and mentor Christian Siriano as well as 16 fresh designers who in week one competed in a two-team face off of monochromatic looks within “warm” and “cool” color palettes. Bones Jones led the warm team as the overall winner while Caycee Black was sent home from the cool team for her unfinished garment. This week the designers worked on their own to create a three-piece streetwear look with an impact, but one designer’s point of view had the most dramatic impact on the entire competition.
