Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is enacting a revenge plot against the eight House Republicans who ousted him.
In October 2023, McCarthy was booted from his position as House speaker when a group of Republicans joined all Democrats in voting to vacate the chair.
McCarthy is out for revenge against the group that he has dubbed the “Crazy Eight” or “Gaetz Eight” and its leader, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), who introduced the motion to have the speaker vacated.
The former House speaker left Congress two months later. This ended up shrinking his party’s majority in the chamber.
McCarthy’s ally, Brian Walsh, is working to round up primary challengers to the “Gaetz Eight.”
The ousted speaker is prepared to mobilize his still-sizable donor network to arrange primary challenges. He is focusing on three representatives specifically. His allies believe that Reps. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina), Bob Good (R-Virginia) and Eli Crane...

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, suggested that she might want to leave the Republican Party.
During an interview with CNN’s chief congressional correspondent Manu Raju on March 24, he asked her how Murkowski felt about Trump calling January 6 prisoners “hostages.”
“I don’t think that it can be defended,” she responded.
“What happened on January 6 was an effort by people who stormed the building in an effort to stop an election certification of an election,” she added. “It can’t be defended.”
“I wish that – that as Republicans, we had a – we had a nominee that I could get behind,” the Alaska senator stated. “I certainly can’t get behind Donald Trump.”
“Are you considering being an independent at this point,” Raju then asked Murkowski.
“Oh, I think I’m very independent-minded,” she replied jokingly.

Updated: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) filed a motion Friday that could lead to a vote to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson, less than a half year into his tenure.
Greene’s action came just as the House passed a $1.2 trillion package to fund the government through September and forestall a shutdown. The bill only would have passed with Democratic votes, with a majority of Republicans against it.
“Ok, deep breath America, here we go again,” CNN anchor Dana Bash told viewers after Manu Raju and other reporters interviewed Greene on the steps of the Capitol afterward.
No vote on Greene’s motion to vacate is scheduled, as she did not seek a “privileged” resolution that would have triggered a two-legislative day timeframe for a floor vote. That is what happened in October, when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl) led a successful effort to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker. What...

Pay no attention to the discredited informant facing prison time.
GOP officials were scrambling Wednesday after Alexander Smirnov, a key witness in the impeachment proceedings against President Biden, was accused of being informed by Russian intelligence.
Smirnov was arrested last Thursday after Special Counsel David Weiss charged him on suspicion of providing the FBI with fraudulent information. Smirnov, an FBI informant for over a decade, was further discredited after a DOJ report Tuesday indicated he was not only lying to the FBI about Biden, but had “contacts with multiple foreign intelligence agencies.

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) criticized supporters of Donald Trump for not caring that the former president sexually assaulted columnist E. Jean Carroll and refusing to believe President Joe Biden was legitimately elected.
“I think a lot of people in this country are out of touch with reality and will accept anything Donald Trump tells them,” the former presidential candidate told CNN. “You had a jury that said that Donald Trump raped a woman. And that doesn’t seem to be moving the needle. There’s a lot of things about today’s electorate that I have a hard time understanding.”
Romney stated his belief that voters have expressed less faith in the nation’s institutions – such as the media – and that this lack of faith has helped Trump.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Members of Congress are seeking to avoid a government shutdown by the end of the week and thousands of demonstrators have gathered on the Capitol lawn in support of Israel, but the real theatrics have been inside, with resentments nearly coming to physical blows.
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tn) accused former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-ca) of elbowing him in the kidney as Burchett was doing an interview Tuesday with NPR. Burchett was one of the eight Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy as speaker last month.
NPR congressional correspondent Claudia Grisales posted a play-by-play of what she saw happen. She wrote that as she was interviewing Burchett, McCarthy walked by with his security detail and “McCarthy shoved Burchett.”
Burchett lunged toward her, she wrote, but she thought it “was a joke.”

Indicted U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) attended a classified briefing on Ukraine, which took place on November 1.
The disgraced senator has been indicted on charges of bribery and being a foreign agent for Egypt.
When he was asked by Manu Raju, a journalist working for CNN, why he was present at the briefing, he denied any impropriety.
“Bottom line is, I’m a United States senator,” Menendez said. “I have my security credentials. And an accusation is just that. It’s not proof of anything.”
The indicted senator pleaded not guilty to all charges against him and has also rejected calls for his resignation.
He has announced that he is running for re-election in 2024.
Despite his optimism, he was forced to resign as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Senate Democrats’ bylaws prohibit members from serving in leadership roles if they have been charged with felonies.

Update: Back to square one: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) is out as the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House.
Jordan fell short in roll call votes this week, and lost even more ground in a third ballot Friday.
“We need to come together and figure out who are speaker is going to be,” Jordan told reporters today.
Members are leaving for the weekend. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-Nc), who is serving as speaker pro tem, said there will be a candidate forum Monday night and conference elections to select a nominee on Tuesday morning.
“We’ll have to go back to the drawing board,” said Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-ca), who was ousted as speaker earlier this month. “What history will look at, the crazy eights, led by [Matt] Gaetz, the amount of damage they have done to this party and this country, is insurmountable. … We are in a very bad position as a party.

Update, 2:20 p.m.: Jim Jordan’s effort to become speaker of the House will be put off for another day.

Update, 1:51 p.m. Pt: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) won the GOP nomination to become the next House Speaker, but he still appeared to be a ways away from securing a majority.
Jordan got 124 votes in secret balloting this afternoon, to 81 for Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga), according to Punchbowl News and other outlets. Scott got into the race at the last minute earlier today.
Jordan needs 217 votes to win the speakership, although that threshold may change if lawmakers are absent. Jordan requested another secret ballot to see if members would back him in a public vote on the floor of the House, but the vote was 152-55, still far short.
“He’ll get there,” former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted last week, told CNN’s Manu Raju as he exited the GOP conference meeting.
McCarthy said that Jordan has to “just sit down and talk” to the holdouts.

Mark Thompson, the former New York Times and BBC chief, is reportedly a leading candidate to assume the top role at CNN, according to a Thursday Semafor report.
Thompson is in the mix for the top CNN job after the firing of Chris Licht in June. Since the ouster, the network has been led by veteran CNN executives, as it continues to struggle against the changing tides of the cable news environment.
A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Discovery declined to comment.
Thompson’s tenure at the New York Times was defined by his efforts to move the newspaper toward digital products, which allowed the Times to become a legitimate competition within digital news. Thompson left the Times in 2020 after eight years with the publication.

CNN anchor Laura Coates has moved to CAA for representation, a move that could signal a new era of influence for the talent-agency giant at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet.
In a broad overhaul of CNN’s schedule, Coates was recently named to anchor a new 11 p.m. hour at CNN, “Laura Coates Live,” where she will follow Abby Philip, who will hold forth at 10. CAA also represents Erin Burnett, who anchors CNN’s 7 p.m. hour. All told, CAA will represent two of five of the anchors who appear during CNN’s schedule between 7 p.m. to midnight., which usually represent some of the network’s most-watched hours.
In years past, CNN’s primetime was dominated by rival agency UTA, which continues to have a strong roster at CNN. The agency represents Philip — who left CNN for UTA — as well as Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, Don Lemon and Alisyn Camerota.

CNN, grappling with shortfalls in linear TV ratings, unveiled a new programming schedule that will put new faces in key weekday slots and launch new weekend programs for veterans Chris Wallace and Christiane Amanpour.
Pamela Brown, Kasie Hunt, Victor Blackwell and Manu Raju are among the journalists who will have new solo-anchored hours. Allisyn Camerota, who has been holding down late nights for the past few months, will take up longer form reporting and will contribute to the Sunday documentary program “The Whole Story,” CNN said Monday.
“By expanding the range and depth of our programming lineup across multiple dayparts, we are strengthening our reporting excellence throughout the schedule, elevating our ability to tell great stories across platforms, and doubling down on CNN’s position as the most trusted name in news,” the network said in a statement.

Updated, with additional comment: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell suddenly froze up while giving remarks during a press conference on Wednesday, raising concerns about his health after suffering a concussion earlier this year.
Reporters were gathered around a lectern at the Capitol as McConnell talked of the Senate’s work this week, but he stopped mid-sentence. He stood at the lectern for about 25 seconds before Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wy) came forward and said to him, “Anything else you want to say, or should we just go back to your office? Do you want to say anything else to the press?” McConnell then stepped away, with Barrasso escorting him.
Later in the press conference, McConnell returned. CNN’s Manu Raju asked him, “What happened at the start of the press conference? Was it related to your injury from early this year when you suffered a concussion.”

In one of the first looks at footage from a documentary filmmaker embedded with the Trump family during the 2020 election cycle, the former president calls the rioters who stormed the Capitol last Jan. 6 “smart” people who were acting in justified anger over a stolen election.
“It was a sad day but it was a day where there was great anger in our country,” Trump said. “People went to Washington primarily because they were angry with an election they think was rigged. … They were angry from the standpoint of what happened in the election.

The Jan. 6 committee revealed on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump was “directly” involved in the illegal campaign to fabricate phony slates of electors in key swing states. So too was Rudy Giuliani. So too was John Eastman, who wrote the “coup memo” instructing former Vice President Mike Pence to stop the certification of the Electoral College. So too, apparently, was Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) — so much so that he wanted to subvert the will of his state’s own voters and hand-deliver fraudulent Wisconsin electors to Pence on Jan.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an unusual virtual speech to members of Congress, called for a humanitarian no-fly zone to protect the country from what he called Russian terror.

Fox News’ Dan Bongino added to the growing catalogue of recorded taping mishaps this week when he shared a video of himself swatting away a “bastard” fly.
The “Unfiltered” host aired a montage of his bug battle Saturday and crossposted it to social media. He warned viewers that “during commercial breaks, things happen” and the clips included “gruesome violence.”
The clips showed him saying he was going to “kill this freakin’ fly,” calling it a “little bastard” and questioning whether it was “a far-left fly” or “a Biden bug.” He said he was “ready to fumigate the whole house with deadly chemicals just to kill these things, just to prove a point.”
Bongino is neither the first host to face technical difficulties — especially while working and broadcasting from home, as so many have done during the coronavirus pandemic — nor the first public figure to deal specifically with bugs while cameras were rolling.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday became the latest public figure to do battle with a cicada.
Every 17 years, these big, noisy, red-eyed bugs emerge from the ground in a massive swarm, and 2021 has been a big moment for them. CNN’s Manu Raju was seen on camera last month dislodging one from his collar. Updated with latest: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-ny) has finally responded to repeated attempts by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-ga) to confront her.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-wy), who refused to stay silent about Donald Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, was ousted from House Republican Leadership on Wednesday, as expected, with a big contrast in how the moment was covered by cable news networks.
In the 9 am Et hour, CNN focused almost entirely on the pending vote, MSNBC devoted slightly less coverage, while Fox News largely stuck to other stories, including the unfolding gas pipeline shutdown and gas shortages in the southeast. Fox did go live for Cheney’s remarks after the closed-door vote, but after a few words, anchors Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino then went on to other stories.
“I will do everything I can to make sure the former president never gets near the Oval Office,” Cheney told reporters afterward.
Cheney was ousted after GOP members expressed unhappiness with her criticisms of Trump and his role in the Jan.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sat at his desk, rarely if ever distracted from the case being laid out against Donald Trump by House impeachment managers this week.
That was certainly not the case with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-sc), who at one point tapped a pencil on his desk, and at another fidgeted his fingers. On Thursday, he left the chamber to go to the cloak room for blocks of time.
During the trial, the Senate cameras are fixed on the raised rostrum and whoever is speaking at that moment; the dozen or so reporters in the chamber, however, are fixated on the movements and reactions of the senators themselves.
Gathered in the third-floor gallery just above the rostrum, the members of the media covering the trial in person have a vantage point not captured by the cameras. The journalists are seated in the press gallery on the opposite end...

Update, 11:44 Am Pt: Donald Trump urged protesters at the Capitol to “stay peaceful,” but he did not instruct them to disperse from the complex, where his supporters have breached the barricades and have been wandering through some of the halls near House and Senate chambers.
“Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!” Trump tweeted.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump, speaking to a rally at the Ellipse, urged his backers to march to the Capitol as a joint session of Congress to count the electoral votes. Protesters breached barricades, forcing a lockdown through the complex. Vice President Mike Pence, who is presiding, reportedly has been evacuated.
Capitol Police had prepared for the expected demonstrators but were overwhelmed by the protesters.
The situation in the Capitol was bedlam. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-va) wrote on Twitter, “We’ve been given gas masks on the House floor.
