James Nesbitt has ruled out an appearance in series two of The Missing.
The first series of BBC One's hit thriller followed Nesbitt's character Tony as he hunted for missing son Olly, though the next series will see Julien Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo) pursue a new investigation.
Nesbitt confirmed to Radio Times that he will not be reprising his part in the new episodes.
The actor also addressed the ambiguity surrounding the first series finale and the fate of missing Olly (Oliver Hunt).
In the final scenes, a deranged Tony approached a young boy in Russia, whom he believed to be his son.
"I was talking to someone about the ending and I was saying it definitely wasn't Olly at the end," Nesbitt explained. "[I thought] Tony is demented and Oliver is dead and the only place that Tony can find solace is in this demented world. And that was how I was playing it.

Starz initially described The Missing as a mini-series. Then, despite very poor ratings, they picked it up for a second season which will focus on a new case and different characters. Should they have cancelled this series instead? Will the already small audience stick around to see the end of this season? Stay tuned.

However depressing the nature of Nordic Noir is, you cannot argue that it has had a positive influence on the crime drama we see on television. The Missing is a new series recently show on the BBC in the UK (and now heading to DVD and Blu-ray) and the influence of Nordic Noir can be seen heavily throughout it. Chilling and eye-opening it manages to show that the British (and French) still have what it takes to make hard-hitting gritty dramas that get their hooks into their audience and refuse to let go.
