Emmys producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay had reason to be upbeat the morning after the kudocast: In what seems to be a rarity for awards shows these days, their production earned almost universally high marks from critics and viewers. For the 75th annual celebration, the Jesse Collins Entertainment trio leaned into nostalgia and the history of television to create a three-hour event that paid tribute to the small screen.
“It was ambitious, and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end,” Collins told Variety on Tuesday morning. Except for one thing: The 75th Emmys on Fox faced an NFL wild card game, as well as news coverage of the Iowa caucuses. More than four years after Rhythm + Flow debuted on Netflix, the hip-hop music competition series is back with a second season featuring new judges, DJ Khaled, Ludacris and Latto. The streamer also announced Eminem as a special guest who will join the battles round “from a surprise location.” Additional music industry guests for the show, in which a panel of judges aim at discovering the next generation’s rap star, will be revealed at a later date.
The series is currently in production for a premiere later this year. In fact, Rhythm + Flow executive producers Jesse Collins & Dionne Harmon left Los Angeles immediately after the Emmy Awards ceremony, which they executive produced, on Monday night. They flew to Atlanta, the main production hub for Season 2 of Rhythm + Flow, which also is filming in other cities across the country.

Mission accomplished: Not only did the Emmys end on time, but several times throughout the telecast, it was actually ahead of schedule. Variety caught up with Emmys telecast producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay on Tuesday morning — just hours after wrapping the event — and all three felt gratified and relieved to have pulled off an Emmys befitting the kudocast’s 75th anniversary.
“Our intention was to create a love letter to television and to sprinkle in the reunions and the nostalgia throughout,” said Harmon. “It was received the way that we hoped it would be, so we’re glad it made everybody happy.”
Added Collins: “There was a definitely a little anxiety going into it, because we took some swings. It was ambitious and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end.”

“Succession” star Sarah Snook won the Emmy on Monday night for outstanding actress in a drama series. The win was Snook’s first Emmy for playing Shiv Roy on the hit HBO series, which ended its run last May after four seasons.
“Thanks to everyone who voted and for loving the show as much as we did as a cast making it and as a crew making it,” Snook began after accepting the award from Jodie Foster, who presented the category. “We put our all into it and the bar was set so high. I think that’s what spurred us on from every department. We all gave it our best, led by [series creator] Jesse Armstrong and [director] Mark Mylod and my cast who I love so much and I’m going to miss.”

“Succession” star Kieran Culkin won the Emmy on Monday night for outstanding actor in a drama series. The win was Culkin’s first Emmy for playing the younger Roman Roy on the hit HBO series, which ended its run last May after four seasons.
The actor used the moment to thank his costars, the show’s creators, his mother, his manager — and shoot his shot for more kids with his wife, Jazz Charton.
“And of course my beautiful wife, Jazz,” Culkin said at the end of his acceptance speech. “Thank you for sharing your life with me and giving me two amazing kids, Kinsey Sioux and Wilder Wolf. I love you so many and so much. And Jazz, I want more.”
That line got big cheers, laughter and “oohs” from the audience. Culkin added, before walking off the stage: “You said! You said ‘maybe,’ if I win! I love you so much.

Fox is set to revive TV classics Grey’s Anatomy & The Sopranos for a special one-night event at the 75th Emmys on Monday, January 15. The ceremony, curated by Emmy Awards executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay, will pay homage to TV history across decades, featuring cast reunions from the 1950s to the present, per Variety. Notable stars like Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Ellen Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, and more will grace the stage, making it a memorable celebration of television’s diamond anniversary. “I think they’ll be talking about the ones that they may see on the screen,” Rouzan-Clay said of reunions. “Those are going to be a big talking point, a big watercooler moment, if you will. … It was a grand task to figure out how to celebrate 75 years of television. If we can bring some nostalgia to that stage, then I think that we’ve done a good deed.

The Television Academy and Fox have today announced what many have long suspected: The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards have moved to January 2024 from September 2023, with the awards ceremony now set for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
While the change from the previously set date of September 18 is still a bit of wishful thinking, as both the WGA and SAG unions are still on strike and seeking to negotiate fair deals with the AMPTP, it does open up the schedule enough to where, should deals happen over the next couple of months, the TV Academy and Fox would likely still have time for the standard amount of pre-production needed to put on the awards telecast.
Unfortunately for the TV Academy, the move does strip the Emmys of its influence on the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, the two other major TV awards that usually air in January. Should neither awards...

The fireworks in the sky on Tuesday night also made their way to Hollywood’s data desks.
Viewership of “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks” on Peacock more than doubled when compared to last year’s show, Variety has learned exclusively, though exact streaming numbers for both 2022 and 2023 are unavailable.

The iconic Emmy statuette is getting a rare enhancement.
The TV Academy unveiled on Tuesday a subtle new look for this year’s Emmy statuette: an inscription of “75” at the base of the figurine. The enhancement will be added to the statuette for this year only amid the 75th anniversary of the award ceremony that celebrates and honors the best in television.
According to the Television Academy, it took 47 proposals for the first Emmy design before the 48th was accepted by the Television Academy. “This time it took us seemingly 48 weeks of meetings, illustrations, debates, false starts and ruminating to get to the finish line,” Scott Buford, senior creative director for the Television Academy, said in a statement.
“When I was first asked by the Academy’s leadership to explore altering the statuette, my first reaction was, ‘Are you sure? This is like giving a nip and tuck to the...

Pamela Duckworth, the head of Fubo Sports Network, is one of the rare examples of women rising to the top in sports media. She credits her career success to “having a thick skin” in the male-dominated industry.
“You have to have a thick skin because when you’re doing sports, especially if you’re doing live sports, everything is coming at you so quickly that you just have to roll with it,” she told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “You have to be like, ‘Ok, I can fix this’ and be solution-oriented.”
Duckworth, who also oversees the Ott streamer’s original sports programming, noted that when she started in her career, she was “one of like two or three females” working on car racing.

While many questions are swirling around the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony, the telecast will air Jan. 10 on NBC/Peacock.
The nominations are a solid mix of big-budget entertainments, and smaller, auteur-driven projects that dominate the cinema side, with an eclectic roster of content being celebrated on television. The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. has stated that all guests and presenters will be appearing in person, in lieu of virtual appearances or satellite arrangements. Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael will be hosting the event, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary at the Beverly Hilton ceremony. As the Hollywood Foreign Press Association looks to get back on its feet after weathering diversity controversies, it has been buzzed that personal reps wouldn’t allow their clients to get back on stage. However, as the HFPA has expanded its ranks with journalists of color, it appears that the industry is pivoting in its attitude toward the organization.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association took another step forward toward a revitalized Golden Globes on Monday by announcing the nominees for the 2023 awards show, set to take place next month.
HFPA president Helen Hoehne kicked off the festivities just after 5 a.m. inside the Beverly Hilton by revealing that George Lopez had to bow out of presenter duties after testing positive for Covid-19, proving that while there are lingering questions about how the industry will respond to a resuscitated show, there’s still a pandemic to contend with. (As such, all press, publicists and attendees of the nominations event had to provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test in order to attend and wear a mask while inside the ballroom.)
George Lopez’s daughter, Mayan Lopez, still turned up as expected and was joined by their fellow Lopez vs. Lopez co-star Selenis Leyva.

Nominations for the 80th Golden Globe Awards came Monday, as always, with their share of snubs of surprises, but this year spread the wealth across a healthy number of different distributors for film and TV: 11 for TV and 17 for film.
Sitting on top of the TV categories was a tie between two of today’s largest streaming competitors: HBO Max and Netflix. With 14 nominations each, there is one key difference that set them apart: the number of programs that were recognized within those 14 nods. HBO Max spread them over seven acclaimed programs, while Netflix’s sum had only five.

After this year’s blackout, the 80th annual Golden Globes Awards ceremony will return to NBC’s airwaves, along with a streaming option via Peacock, on Jan. 10.
In 2021, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which is made up of journalists from Europe, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, faced intense scrutiny from Hollywood insiders over the lack of diversity seen within its membership.
