Columbia Pictures and Wayfarer Studios It Ends With Us, directed and starring Justin Baldoni, and also headlining Blake Lively has moved from June 21 to Aug. 9. The pic is based on the Colleen Hoover novel.
Sony believes the film will be strong counterprogramming in the early August frame against Lionsgate’s Borderlands, Amazon MGM’s The Fire Inside and the movie, and Warner Bros’ M. Night Shyamalan genre thriller The Trap.
It Ends With Us moves away from Focus Features’ Bikeriders on June 21, which stands as the only wide release. Following Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die on June 7, the month’s box office will get a big boon from Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 on June 14. The next big tentpole after that amid a month of adult skewing titles that includes New Line’s The Watchers and Kevin Costner’s Horizon, is Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4.

For generations, every reader repeated the same phrase, “The book is better than the movie.” The phrase became a critical reflex to some of the most mediocre adaptations until Hollywood decided to not cut corners and genuinely pay more attention to the source material. As a result, fans raised questions when books turned into movies. Until the entertainment industry did justice to the books justice by creating memorable movie or TV Series adaptations such as The Lord of The Rings, The Godfather, Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, and so much more.

Exclusive: Sony, which kicked off CinemaCon last year, is skipping this year’s exhibitor-studio conference in Las Vegas that runs April 8-11 at Caesars Palace.
This happens from time to time when a major studio will sit out, and it’s not a diss to theater owners. The last time Sony didn’t attend CinemaCon was in 2019. Quite often this is a cost-savings thing for studios when they skip CinemaCon. To get ready for the April confab, there’s a big rush to ready a year’s worth of trailers and clips, solidify VFX and sound effects, and plan stars’ travel within the next three months. Complicating all of that, however, is the impact of the dual strikes’ on Q3 and Q4 theatrical releases which caused a delay in production, and thus an ultimate post-production logjam. Sony, I understand, is focusing on getting back to max theatrical feature outpost now that the strikes are over.

We’re finally saying farewell to 2023 and kicking off a whole new year of movies. Though the box office remains all over the place, with presumably guaranteed blockbusters failing to take off and “Barbie” becoming a cultural juggernaut, 2023 gave us a lot of theatrical surprises.
But what does 2024 have in store? Right off the bat, sequels. A lot of sequels! Intellectual property remains the lay of the land and there will be plenty of continuations. Tim Burton will take us back to 1988 with his “Beetlejuice” sequel while Ridley Scott will return us to ancient Rome with “Gladiator 2.” We’ll also be getting a slew of potential franchise films. Jon M. Chu takes us back to Oz with “Wicked: Part 1” and Denis Villeneuve returns to the spice-riddled world of Arrakis with the highly anticipated follow-up to “Dune.” And don’t forget the “Mean Girls” musical.

V Pappas has decided on their next move. The former Chief Operating Officer at TikTok has joined the board at Simon & Schuster as the publisher looks to take advantage of the burgeoning #BookTok community.
Pappas is one of six members of Simon & Schuster’s board of directors. The publisher has revamped its top-level structure since its acquisition by private equity firm Kkr. The $1.62 billion deal closed in October 2023. Three Kkr representatives will sit on the Simon & Schuster board, alongside Pappas, ex-Penguin Random House U.S. CEO Madeline McIntosh, and Disney vet Kareem Daniel.
“This board is going to help us be the pre-eminent publisher,” said Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp. “We have aspirations to grow. We have aspirations to be the first choice for authors. And I think this board really gives us a window into how people throughout the media landscape are thinking about how books fit into the world.

In an intriguing move, yet retro, move for Disney on the 2024 theatrical release calendar which is starving for product, three Pixar movies –2020’s Soul, 2021’s Luca and 2022’s Turning Red –which were sidelined on Disney+ during the pandemic, are getting special engagement theatrical runs. We hear all three will receive moderate to wide theatrical runs. The titles will remain in play on Disney+ during their new theatrical window.
The Oscar winning animated movie Soul will open on Jan. 12, while Turning Red will play on Feb. 9, followed by Luca on March 22. Tickets go on sale Jan. 2. All three will precede Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 which opens on June 14.
The press release reads that the studio invites “moviegoers to experience three Pixar films the way they were meant to be seen”. Disney’s re-release of older animated titles was a huge cash cow business that they practiced for decades even into the DVD era.

With the SAG-AFTRA strike finally over, it looks like Justin Baldoni’s adaptation of the beloved novel, It Ends With Us, could finally go back into production. No word yet on when the movie will resume filming, but it’s been on hold since May, as the film’s shooting was disrupted by strike WGA workers, a situation not helped when actors went on strike two months later. While the movie now has the green light to start again, it may not be so easy, as the movie will have to juggle the schedules of its highly in demand actors. Blake Lively is rumoured to be acting opposite Anna Kendrick in a sequel to A Simple Favor, but one of this film’s stars, Brandon Sklenar, will likely be due back on the set of the Yellowstone prequel 1923. Paramount Plus is no doubt eager to start shooting the second...

Theatrical releases continue to be added to the 2024 calendar, which is a very good sign given that we still haven’t seen the shake-up yet from the prolonged SAG-AFTRA strike. Focus Features just dated the horror comedy, Lisa Frankenstein, which was written by Oscar winner Diablo Cody for a Feb. 9, 2024 opening.
Also hitting theaters on that weekend next year is Sony’s Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni film, Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us.
Lisa Frankenstein reps the feature theatrical debut of Zelda Williams and follows a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way. After its $2 billion-plus agreement to sell Simon & Schuster fell apart last October, Paramount Global has found a new buyer for the book publishing giant at a slightly discounted all-cash price point of $1.62 billion.
Private equity firm Kkr has entered into an agreement to acquire the assets of Simon & Schuster, the companies said August 7. In opting to sell to a buyer not affiliated with the “Big Five” group of publishers — which includes prior suitor Penguin Random House along with HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group and Macmillan — Paramount appears to think this is the deal that can finally clear regulatory approval.
“We see a compelling opportunity to help Simon & Schuster become an even stronger partner to literary talent by investing in the expansion of the company’s capabilities and distribution networks,” stated Richard Sarnoff, chairman of media at Kkr.

Hollywood has officially been shut down as SAG-AFTRA formally announced its first film and television strike since 1980 at a press conference at its Los Angeles headquarters on Thursday. While the WGA has been on strike since May and certainly impacted a number of productions — particularly in television — the work stoppage from the actors will grind Hollywood to a complete halt. Some major films were still in production at the time of the strike, from Marvel sequels to huge franchises, but those are now on pause, putting their release dates in jeopardy depending on how long the SAG-AFTRA strike will last. Here are all the movies currently being affected by the strike.

The movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestseller "It Ends With Us" is on its way. Filming officially kicked off in May, and fans started to get glimpses of what's in store in the form of behind-the-scenes pictures of Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, and Brandon Sklenar in character in Hoboken, NJ. Though production was paused in May due to the ongoing WGA strike, on July 7, Sony announced the film will be heading to theaters in early 2024.
The release date comes weeks after Hoover defended the movie's casting and the costumes - which some fans reacted strongly to when they saw the first images from set - and promised they were going to be "so happy" with the final film.

The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel “It Ends With Us” has set Feb. 9, 2024 as its theatrical release date despite its halted production in the wake of the WGA writers’ strike.
The Columbia and Wayfarer Studios film will star Blake Lively as Lily Bloom, a Boston resident who finds an unexpected kindred spirit in neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni). Their relationship takes some twists and turns, and Lily’s high school love interest Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar) comes back into the picture to complicate things further.
According to a Deadline report from June’s shutdown, less than half the movie has been shot. Filming is paused until the completion of the writers’ strike following the production’s failure to persuade the guild last month that Wayfarer Studios’ cofinancing of the project made it an indie film, which would have allowed it to continue filming within the strike’s guidelines.

One thing fans seem unhappy with is Lively and Baldoni’s casting as leads Lily and Ryle, respectively, because in the book Lily is 23 and Ryle is 30, while Lively is 35 and Baldoni is 39. Hoover explained that she wanted to age the characters up in the movie in an effort to correct a mistake she made in the book.
“Back when I wrote It Ends With Us, the new adult [genre] was very popular,” she said. “You were writing college-age characters. That...

Exclusive: It Ends with Us, the Justin Baldoni-directed film that stars Blake Lively and Baldoni, has had its production shoot ended until the resolution of the WGA strike. The decision was made Thursday, with less than half of the movie completed. The reason for the film halting was an inability to persuade the WGA that the co-financing status of Wayfarer Studios was enough to consider that the production was within WGA guidelines, even though the film will be a negative pickup for signatory Sony Pictures.
As Deadline revealed earlier this week, the film’s shoot in parts of New Jersey was disrupted and a temporary halt called while the film’s producers tried to persuade the WGA. The WGA disagreed, sources said. This is inevitable shrapnel of a strike that will likely continue, as the AMPTP and WGA negotiators aren’t even meeting right now. Sources said 140 or so...

Exclusive: The WGA pickets has at least temporarily shuttered It Ends with Us, a movie that has been shooting in various locations that include Weekawken and Jersey City, New Jersey. Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni are starring and Baldoni is directing the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, which Christy Hall adapted. The film was first picketed and shut down on Monday, June 5, but Baldoni and his cohorts at Wayfarer Studios are making the case that even though Sony Pictures will be the distributor, Wayfarer is on the hook for co-financing the modestly budgeted film and that should be enough for it to be left alone. Those talks continue.
On the day it shut down, It Ends With Us was supposed to lens at a park in Jersey City. The picketing led to an attempt to shoot a scene with a paddle boat at the Liberty Harbor Marina,...

The movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover's runaway bestseller "It Ends With Us" is filming now. On May 15, Blake Lively, who stars in the film as Lily, was photographed on set in New York City in costume. Brandon Sklenar will play Atlas. Jenny Slate joined the film as Ryle's sister Alyssa.

There Are A Few obvious reasons for author R.F. Kuang to be drinking before 5 p.m. on a Friday. She’s just turned in the last paper of the semester for her Ph.D. She’s on Day One of a monthlong national book tour. And her new novel, Yellowface, which debuts Tuesday, is on track to be (another) bestseller.
Sitting with her editor at a hotel bar in Manhattan’s East Village, the scene ironically mirrors the last bit of normalcy Yellowface begins with. That is, before the book — and its main character,...
