Mark Rober is teaching his fans about “all the tools and tricks” that inform his YouTube videos. The engineer and creator, whose prankish spirit and eccentric creations have brought nearly 50 million subscribers to his channel, has expanded his Crunchlabs brand with an adult-oriented product called the Hack Pack.
Rober launched Crunchlabs to share his love of science, technology, engineering, and math (Stem) with his youngest fans. The brand initially launched as a subscription box that regularly delivers age-appropriate science experiments to kids’ doors.
The latest expansion of the brand is targeting a more grown-up audience. In a video on the Crunchlabs YouTube channel, Rober explained that the Hack Pack will be perfect for “teenagers and adults” who want to devise contraptions that resemble the ones seen in the engineer’s videos.
The Hack Pack is designed to be easy to use, even for buyers with minimal engineering experience. Rober explained...

Jimmy Donaldson is getting more shine from traditional media. Nearly two years after he graced the cover of Rolling Stone‘s first Creator Issue, the man known as MrBeast has hit the front page of another magazine: Time. The 101-year-old news publication featured Donaldson in a story about his “swift rise” on YouTube and his status as “the most-watched person in the world.”
The 4,500-word profile of Donaldson includes all of the typical talking points that come up in long-form explorations of the MrBeast empire. Time traced the creator’s roots in North Carolina, chronicled his upending of the YouTube ecosystem, and details his struggles to maintain profitability in an ever-changing industry.
Donaldson told Time that he envisions a future in which he won’t have to rely on sponsors the way he does now. “I know a video is gonna get 200 million views,” he said. “And I sell that video to a different company,...

Thanks to the influencer marketing boom, creators with large followings on platforms like YouTube and TikTok are getting larger roles during Super Bowl season. In the weeks leading up to the annual football showdown, brands turned to digital natives in hopes of expanding the reach of their campaigns.
For the 58th edition of the Big Game, creators played multiple positions.
The Logan Pauls and KSIs of the world can use the Super Bowl to advertise their own products, but for other influencers, team-ups with advertisers opened up new doors. It’s not just brands that are getting in on the influencer marketing trend — even the NFL itself is paying attention to the growth of creator content. Without further ado, here are some partnerships that caught our attention during the first few days of February:

In 2023, we began publishing weekly recaps of the most-watched sponsored videos on YouTube. After all, marketers spent nearly $1 billion on YouTube campaigns last year, and that number is projected to rise even higher.
We compiled our rankings using data from our partners at Gospel Stats. Some of our findings were obvious and to be expected:
MrBeast is the most popular creator on YouTube. Digital learning platforms like to partner with educational channels like Veritasium and Kurzgesagt. Vpn companies like to partner with…pretty much everyone.
We also drew some insights that felt new and noteworthy. Influencer marketing may not be as novel as it once was, but the industry is still subject to constant change, especially after experiencing a boom during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In all our analysis of 2023 YouTuber campaigns, four recurring themes stood out. As 2024 is underway, look out for these trends (in no particular...

More than 9 million people have viewed the Twitter photo that first originated on Kristen Bell’s Instagram feed, after a Netflix employee called attention to the random assemblage at the waterside meal. The photo was taken at Idaho’s South Fork Lodge, which was purchased by avid fly fisherman Jimmy Kimmel in 2020.

Joining Tapper for some outdoor fellowship are Courtney Cox, Olivia Munn, John Mulaney, Adam Scott, Jason Bateman, Shiri Appelby, Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid and former NASA engineer Mark Rober. One person on Twitter said Kimmel invites 30-something celebs each year for a week of fishing, hiking and dining outdoors.

Mark Rober‘s holiday tradition is back for a fifth — and potentially last — time. The engineer and YouTuber has unveiled “the Final GlitterBomb,” which is the ultimate form of his karmic prank machine.
Rober started developing his trademark porch pirate deterrent after two thieves made off with a package that was sitting in front of his house. The engineer’s first glitter-spewer was a simple booby trap, but the contraption’s design has evolved over the year. Rober has added in fart sprays and increased the number of phones that record footage from inside the device.
‘The 2022 edition, titled “GlitterBomb 5.0,” is more sophisticated than all of its predecessors. It is armed with a full gallon of fart spray and a loud siren. Rober also installed drones that burst out of the fake package, fly around, and drop glitter all over their surroundings. This time around, Robert doesn’t just target garden-variety porch pirates.

The nominees for the 2022 Streamy Awards are here.
The annual award show will be held in person on December 4 after two straight years of socially-distanced celebration. Despite the change of scenery, the most-nominated creator is the same as last year. Jimmy ‘MrBeast‘ Donaldson is up for seven awards, while his friend and frequent collaborator Mark Rober will have a shot to earn six trophies.
Other creators with multiple nominations include ascendant Twitch star Kai Cenat, Blogilates host Cassey Ho, and the man who will host the 2022 Streamys: Eric ‘Airrack‘ Decker. The filmmaker, entrepreneur, and ping pong tournament director will try to become the first person to host the Streamys and win the coveted Creator of the Year trophy in the same year.
If Donaldson denies Decker that top prize, he’ll establish a milestone of his own by becoming the first person to win Creator of the Year three consecutive times.

As creators increasingly diversify their presence across all major social platforms, companies like YouTube and Twitch are rewriting the rules around revenue sharing and rethinking just how generous they should be with their content partners.
On Sept. 20, YouTube, led by Susan Wojcicki, unveiled a series of creator-driven announcements, including a plan to bring its “secret sauce,” its revenue-sharing model, to its shortform product, Shorts. But there’s a catch: While longer-form YouTube videos pay out 55 percent of their ad revenue to creators and 45 percent to YouTube, the shortform version flips that, with only 45 percent of total revenue going to creators (the rest covers costs of music licensing). Creators’ payouts will be determined by their contribution to the total Shorts views every 30 days, which means that as more users upload Shorts, it could become more difficult for a user to take up a larger percentage of total viewership,...

Demi Lovato has dropped a raucous new single, “Substance.” The anthemic pop-punk number is the second track off their forthcoming eighth studio LP, Holy Fvck, out Aug. 19 via Island Records.
The song arrived with a video directed by Cody Critcheloe that nods to late ’90s and early ’00s pop-punk music videos. In the clip, Lovato stomps into a board meeting, joins some pals at a diner, and gets wild at a house party. The video ends with an appearance on a red carpet that features a cameo from Paris Hilton.

The TV upfronts are usually a dog-and-pony show where networks unveil their new content slates.
At YouTube’s Brandcast presentation for brands and agencies, held for the first time during upfronts week, the focus was on the gigantic video platform’s popular creators, its scale across internet TVs — and a new solution for marketers to set limits on ad frequency, addressing one of the most irritating aspects of ad-supported streaming services.
“The audiences you most care about are coming to YouTube to watch content,” CEO Susan Wojcicki told attendees at the event, held Tuesday evening at the Imperial Theatre in New York’s Times Square. As YouTube took its first step onto turf long controlled by television — upfronts week in New York — the Google-owned video operation released new research affirming its connection with viewers.
The new study conducted with the firm Talk Shoppe was summed up with the acronym Rise, short for relevance, intellectual, sensorial and emotional. It found that 86 of survey respondents said YouTube delivered relevant and intellectual programming, compared with results in the 73 to 79 range for other platforms. In terms of emotion, the number was 84, edging social media at 80. The lone category where YouTube did not come out No. 1 was in sensorial — aka the way programming looks and sounds — where it rated 72 and trailed streaming’s 76.
The study, commissioned by YouTube parent Google, surveyed 2,000 respondents aged 18-64 in the U.S. from January 11 to 21.

In lieu of a year-end Rewind video, an endeavor that YouTube has abandoned altogether, the video giant unveiled five 'best-of lists' on its official blog today, including the 10 'top trending videos' of the year in the U.S.
MrBeast's I Spent 5 Hours Buried Alive led the pack, followed by Dream’s Minecraft Speedrunner Vs 5 Hunters, and Mark Rober’s Glitterbomb Trap Catches Phone Scammer (who gets arrested).
A YouTube spokesperson tells Tubefilter it tabulated top trending videos by looking at a range of factors, including the nature and volume of viewership within the U.S. -- with only one video being eligible per creator. Shorts and music videos were excluded, as YouTube released standalone lists for those two categories this year (see below).

The rest of the upfront focused on adventures of a different kind, including the big reveal that the company is sending someone to space. Discovery unveiled a slew of new and returning shows during the company’s upfront, including “Who Wants to Be an Astronaut?” (working title), which Discovery is touting as the first show of its kind to feature the real-life adventures of space tourism.
