Lucca Comics & Games 2023 Fest Offers Something for Every Fan, From ‘Harry Potter’ to ‘Hunger Games’
After two pandemic years and a successful 2022 edition back in full swing, Lucca Comics & Games — Europe’s biggest geek meet, second in size globally only to Tokyo’s Comiket — is set to unspool again in the picturesque Tuscan town from Nov. 1-5. In the turbulent times of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the gathering will offer its 80,000 daily visitors a slew of movies, series, comics, games, video games, concerts and live events.
“We’re the only festival in the world having a red carpet and a large cinema-focused component that is not primarily a film festival. Lucca is a great hybrid event,” Lucca chief Emanuele Vietina tells Variety ahead of the event’s launch.
The big star of Day One will be Michel Gondry, who will attend the opening ceremony and host a masterclass covering his body of work, including his latest, “The Book of Solutions.”

Ten years ago, Lucca Comics & Games expanded its scope with a dedicated film and TV section run by Milan-based entertainment marketing company Qmi, headed by Giovanni Cova, who has been working in tandem on this strand with Lucca chief Emanuele Vietina.
During the course of this decade, Hollywood has become a more integral part of this unique geek meet. Initially with studio premieres, followed by streamers seeking to tap into the proselytizing power of thousands of cosplayers and fan-based communities that descend upon the medieval Tuscan town.
However this year, both Cova and Vietina are particularly proud of how the event is serving as a launching pad for local genre content in a spirit of Italy’s restart, they tell Variety.
It looks like Lucca has returned to its pre-pandemic level. Am I right?

This year Lucca Comics & Games, which draws almost 250,000 guests, will really have something for everyone.
Michael Pena and Diego Luna of Netflix’s “Narcos,” Marvel Comics’ editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, executive producer of videogame “Kingdom Hearts III” Shinji Hashimoto, “The Crow” creator James O’Barr, former Ferrari racer Jean Alesi and manga master Leiji Matsumoto are among the featured guests expected to be on hand at the event, which runs Oct. 31-Nov. 4 within the Tuscan town’s medieval walls.
This ever-evolving pop culture convention, now in its 52nd year, covers a wide range of events and their worlds precisely because it “mixes Renaissance heritage with pop culture and creative industries,” says Lucca Comics & Games director Emanuele Vietina, who says that many sectors — movies and TV series, printed comics, book publishing and audiobooks, music, video games and eSports — are “all represented [at Lucca] at the top levels.”
