In the depths of the Covid pandemic, stuck at home in an emptied-out New York City, filmmaker Noah Baumbach figured he and his life partner and creative collaborator Greta Gerwig had two choices for their next project.
“It was either, we were going to do something in the apartment or a Spielbergian apocalypse movie,” Baumbach said, not entirely in jest, in a White Noise panel discussion Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: New York awards-season event.

The movie he, Gerwig, actor Adam Driver and producer David Heyman ended up making arguably is both: a large-scale, big-budget, cast-of-hundreds environmental disaster movie with a lot of the interior life and offbeat emotional detail of his past work. Set in the 1980s, it contains both a fully staged train crash and whimsical cross-talk among characters around the house while catastrophe looms.

Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story (2019) followed The Squid and the Whale (2005), and showed the three-times Oscar-nominated director’s impressive talent for portraying relationship complexities on screen and paying attention to the details and reactions thereof.
In adapting Don DeLillo’s 1985 postmodernist novel White Noise for the screen, Baumbach has further challenged himself, with a look again at family dynamics, but also intellectual superiority, information saturation and impending death, all under the guise of a dystopian tale of American middle-class life in the 1980s. He even transfers some of DeLillo’s words from page to script. It certainly is a labour of love for the filmmaker.
White Noise tells the story of college professor Jack Gladney (played by Marriage Story‘s Adam Driver), wife Babette (Greta Gerwig), and their assortment of children from their various marriages, all living the middle-class American Dream under one comfortable roof, with humdrum but bustling effect.

For Kaitlyn Dever, starring as the titular heroine in Hulu's "Rosaline" was a dream come true. She tells Popsugar that she first heard about the project - which reimagines "Romeo and Juliet" from the perspective of Romeo's first love and Juliet's cousin, Rosaline - years ago when she was 15. The actor, now 25, says that even when she read the script back then, "it was always something that was super special," adding, "I think society needs time to catch up with certain projects." The movie stayed in her head as an idea, and when screenwriter Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber called her up to ask if she wanted the lead part for real, she was thrilled.
During the film's production, she met two of her idols: Minnie Driver and Bradley Whitford, whom she calls "icons and literal legends." Dever admits she is a huge fan of the movie "Ella Enchanted,...

Hey, it’s getting pretty close to movie award season, so what better time to, as they sing in “Kiss Me Kate”, “Brush Up Your Shakespeare”. Now, don’t think that you’re doing homework, since this new film delves into one of the Bard’s classics. Yes, it can be fun even though the cast isn’t singin’ and dancin’ up a storm as in West Side Story. Whoops, let the “cat outta’ the bag” with that last aside. Yet, it’s a different take on the tale from what’s been shown so many times before. This new “twist” builds itself around a minor character, much as with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern from Hamlet (who got their spin-off...

Michael Mann’s upcoming Ferrari movie, in which Adam Driver plays Italian motoring icon Enzo Ferrari, has released the first official photos of the actor in character.
Driver, on set in Modena, Italy, for the biopic shoot, appears as the sunglass-wearing founder of the Ferrari race car team and also in preparation for the infamous Mille Miglia race. Set in 1957, Ferrari sees the race car maker facing bankruptcy and a tempestuous marriage with his wife, Laura, who is played by Penélope Cruz.
Amid that crisis, Ferrari and his team of drivers roll the dice on one race — 1,000 miles across Italy, in the Mille Miglia. Woodley takes on the role of Lina Lardi, Enzo’s mistress; Patrick Dempsey is race car driver Piero Taruffi; Jack O’Connell is fellow driver Peter Collins; Sarah Gadon plays Linda Christian; and Gabriel Leone is the charismatic Fon de Portago.

Michael Mann has been keeping busy lately. He has recently brought the series Tokyo Vice to HBO and directed the pilot episode. He also released a sequel to one of his most successful movies, Heat, in book form, and he announced earlier this summer that filming had gone underway for his new movie about Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari will be his first feature film since 2015’s cyber-thriller, Blackhat.
The Film Stage brings us the first look at Adam Driver’s interpretation of Enzo Ferrari in Mann’s new movie. Driver (who may be in for a bevy of jokes due to the pun of his name) will be joined by Penélope Cruz as Laura Ferrari, Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, Patrick Dempsey as racing car driver Piero Taruffi, Jack O’Connell as racing car driver Peter Collins, Sarah Gadon as Linda Christian, and Gabriel Leone as Fon De Portago.

Welcome to this week’s review of Impact Wrestling, which this week opens with a Before the Impact match that saw Juice Robinson defeat Alex Zayne! Let’s get into the review…
Match #1: Frankie Kazarian def. Kenny King The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:
Before Frankie Kazarian challenges Mike Bailey for the X-Division Title tomorrow night at Bound For Glory, he must get through the man he pinned to become #1 Contender, Kenny King! Kazarian counters an early Royal Flush attempt into a strong clothesline. King avoids a leg drop on the apron, then hits a slingshot crossbody to the outside. Kazarian turns the tide with a belly-to-belly suplex into the corner turnbuckles. Kazarian hits the springboard leg drop for two. King drives him face-first into the turnbuckle, then connects with a T-Bone suplex out of the corner. King almost puts Kazarian away with the Tiger Driver but it’s still not enough.

“White Noise” might be the quietest high-profile Oscar hopeful in the last decade: The Netflix film from Noah Baumbach, a two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter whose last film was nominated for best picture, boasts a cast that includes Adam Driver and a 89 score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, buzz is strangely muted for the first film ever to serve as the opening night movie of the Venice and New York Film Festivals. But why?
“Unfilmable” source material
That likely begins with the source material. Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s whimsical novel revolves around Jack Gladney (Driver), a professor of Hitler studies at the College-on-the-Hill. He lives with his wife Babette (Greta Gerwig) and their four children, but when an “Airborne Toxic Event” takes place in their community, the family must grapple with the universal mysteries of love and death.
During his introductory remarks at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on Sept.

Movie releases were turned on their heads over the past two years while theaters were closed and people were staying home because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of this, many movies that came out in 2020 and 2021 were released to streaming services in a way that hadn't happened before. Now that theaters are back up and running, though, some studios are doing hybrid releases: putting movies in theaters and on streaming platforms at the same time. Not "House of Gucci," though. The movie, starring Adam Driver and Lady Gaga, was released exclusively in theaters on Nov. 24, 2021.
In "House of Gucci" - which is, of course, about the titular fashion house's dynasty - Lady Gaga plays Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci (Driver) who was convicted of ordering Gucci's 1985 murder. The real Reggiani served 18 years in prison before being released. The film generated a lot of buzz during award season, but,...
