A coalition of LGBTQ groups, celebrity activists, journalists and New York Times contributors are protesting what they call the media outlet’s “irresponsible, biased” coverage of the transgender community.
Judd Apatow, Ashlee Marie Preston, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Jameela Jamil, Jonathan Van Ness, Lena Dunham, Margaret Cho, Peppermint, Shakina, Tommy Dorfman and Wilson Cruz are among those who signed on to a letter, which is calling on the Times to stop platforming anti-trans activists and presenting them as “average Americans without an agenda.” They also are calling on the Times to hold a meeting with transgender community members and leaders and invest in hiring of transgender writers and editors, among other things. Read the open letter here.
GLAAD, Hrc, Pflag, the Transgender Law Center, Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund and the Women’s March are among the groups signing on to the letter.

Where do the Leap Hosts go when Quantum Leap’s Ben Song jumps into them? That’s a question many have been asking since NBC’s continuation premiered back in September.
In the original series starring Scott Bakula as Sam Beckett, those being leapt into would enter an empty waiting room that featured a white table and a single door to exit. They were then interrogated for information that could help Sam during his leaps.

Quantum Leap Episode 12
Quantum Leap is a show with social justice baked right into it. Whether we are talking about the revival or the original series, hope, heart and humor drive the leaps. “Let Them Play” focuses on the common good, the power of community and love for oneself and others as we follow the Mendez family–Coach Carlos, Miriam (Brigitte Kali Canales), and their daughter Gia (Josielyn Aguilera).
Ben leaps into the year 2012 and the body of Coach Carlos just as the mighty Lady Lions are playing a tight game with Stanford scouts watching from the stands. One of the Lady Lion’s best teammates gets injured. As Ben looks to the bench, only one player is healthy and ready for the court–Gia. Coach Carlos doesn’t hesitate to put his daughter, Gia, in the game and the injured player is miffed about taking a seat.

Representation matters. That's a fact.
Those who take issue with Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 12 addressing the genuine plight of trans individuals -- as tragic now as it was in 2012 -- may still recognize how much representation has benefited other groups and hopefully will extend that understanding to all people one day.
Meanwhile, the show took impressive measures to ensure they did this right. Trans involvement and voices informed the casting, writing, and directing to ensure authenticity and inclusiveness.
Admittedly, Gia's story has a very fairytale-like quality to it.
She has parents who love and support her, and she attends a school where she can be open and honest about who she is.
The injustices she suffers -- changing in the janitor's closet, public bullying, teammate resentment -- are unfair but could be so much worse, which doesn't make it okay, just less terrible.
Okay, real talk. If you think that...

Update, with Lauren Patten statements When Boston area audiences saw a pre-Broadway performance of the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill in 2018, they saw actor Lauren Patten sing a powerful, showstopping rendition of the hit song “You Oughta Know,” with the young performer delivering the blistering number as a lovestruck – and gender non-conforming – teenager.
When Broadway audiences saw the same show in 2019 – which reopens from the Covid pandemic shutdown on Oct. 21 at the Broadhurst Theatre – audiences again saw the scene-stealing, soon-to-be-Tony-nominated Patten in the role, but references to the character’s being nonbinary were all but gone. And on social media, Patten, a cisgender woman, had shifted from referring to her Jagged character Jo as “they” or “them” to “she” or “her.”
When discussing the matter in public, producers insisted that the character had never been written or conceived as nonbinary, describing the role more along the lines of a...

The Great Work Begins: Scenes from Angels In America, director Ellie Heyman’s star-packed, virtual reimagining of Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning epic, has been named the year’s Outstanding Digital Theater production by the Drama League.
The award — one of five categories created by the Drama League specifically for this year’s pandemic-altered theater season — was announced Friday night at the 87th annual Drama League Awards, streamed worldwide through the interactive Awards Room platform.
For the first time since the league began presenting awards in 1922, theater companies and productions beyond New York’s Broadway and Off Broadway were able to compete, reflecting the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic shutdown season. NBC has pulled its socially distant comedy “Connecting” from its primetime lineup.
The series will air its final four episodes on Peacock and NBC.com. It had been airing on Thursday nights at 8:30 p.m. Episodes of “Superstore” will air in its place through Nov. 19.

An understandable if tricky to navigate instinct during these many months of quarantine is the instinct to create meaningful art out of These Times. Even as the entire world goes on pause, creativity marches stubbornly on, hoping to make sense out of senseless things. But with no end in sight, it’s just about impossible for any art about the pandemic made during the pandemic to shed much light on what’s happening besides the fact that everyone feels like they’re losing their minds. That’s held true for TV shows about life in isolation that lean heavily on social distancing and Zoom. Something like Freeform’s “Love in the Time of Corona” or HBO’s “Coastal Elites,” while well-intentioned, failed to capture much about this era beyond the fact that it’s surreal. On the face of it, “Connecting…”, NBC’s new show about socially distanced friends shot in quarantine,...

Superstore and pandemic comedy Connecting are moving back a week as NBC continues to shuffle its fall schedule.
Superstore will return on Thursday October 29, having previously been dated for Thursday October 22 at 8pm, while Connecting, which was originally set for Thursday October 1 at 8:30pm will move to Thursday October 1.
This comes 24 hours after NBC moved up the premiere of season five of This Is Us with the family drama launching with a two-hour premiere on October 27.
The sixth season of Superstore will see the exit of star America Ferrera. However, the actress will guest star in the first two episodes of the season after the Covid-19 production shutdown meant that only one half of her two part finale aired. When histories are written about the rise of the Streaming Wars and the dawn of Peak TV, Transparent will be a prominent part of the tale. It was Amazon’s first significant original series, the first streaming show to win major awards (for Jeffrey Tambor’s performance in the title role, as newly-out trans woman Maura Pfefferman), and, along with Orange Is the New Black, a trailblazer for how trans characters were depicted and, eventually, cast on television.
It was a profoundly important show, and at times a great one.

Emotions were high at the New York premiere of Season 5 of “Transparent,” a 100-minute musical that creator Jill Soloway has dubbed the “Musicale Finale,” as cast and crew gathered to bid adieu to the groundbreaking series. Equal parts heartbreaking, creatively risky, spiritual and wacky, the first TV series to put trans characters front and center took its licks and went out with a swan song — literally.
Following a premiere screening at the third annual Tribeca TV Festival, series creator Jill Soloway, Season 5 co-writer and composer Faith Soloway, and stars Judith Light, Jay Duplass, Alexandra Billings, and Shakina Nayfack gathered to reflect on the grand finish.

Friday night’s premiere of the series finale of “Transparent” at L.A. Live’s Regal theater felt like a family reunion for the Pfefferman clan.
Matriarch Judith Light embraced each one of her TV children and guest stars from previous seasons who also turned up for a group photo to commemorate the occasion. And yet something — or rather someone — was noticeably missing: Jeffrey Tambor, the Emmy-winning actor who portrayed the titular characters, Maura Pfefferman, but was fired in 2017 following allegations of sexual harassment.
Not that his presence seemed to be missed. “Whoopee!” exclaimed creator Jill Soloway. “It feels like a gigantic celebration, like a hot air balloon going up in the sky.” And even though Soloway could have never predicted the way her series would end, it was always her intention to go out on a literal high note. “We thought about turning it into a musical in some way...

The Pfeffermans are back to take one last bow in the musical finale of Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” Amazon announced during its session at the Television Critics Association Press Tour that the two-hour movie event will debut Sept. 27, in addition to releasing the official trailer, featuring the family’s colorful journey toward acceptance in the face of a shocking loss.

It’s no secret that Jeffrey Tambor’s “Transparent” character Maura Pfefferman is killed off on the Amazon series’ upcoming musical finale. The challenge for creator Jill Soloway was how to pull that trigger tastefully, as Tambor’s exit from the show was anything but.
“Our tone has always been one of — I heard someone call it ‘vigorous tonal shifts,'” Soloway said Saturday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “If you’re watching ‘Transparent,’ you’re laughing and then you’re crying and then it’s sexy and then it’s sad again. It’s kind of a thrill ride for neurotic people — [you’re] thrown around, shaking the anxiety out of you.”

“Transparent” creator Jill Soloway addressed how the show’s upcoming musical finale allowed the team behind the show to move beyond the scandal that saw series star Jeffrey Tambor exit the series.

“Transparent” is going out with a big song and dance.
Amazon has released the trailer for the show’s 2-hour musical feature finale, which will close out the series in place of a traditional final season. In the finale, the Pfeffermans will confront the life-changing loss of Maura Pfefferman and “come together to celebrate connection, joy, and transformation.”
Maura was played throughout the show’s first four seasons by Jeffrey Tambor, however, the actor was shown the exit door by Amazon last February, following accusations of sexual harassment on set by transgender actresses Van Barnes and Trace Lysette. Creator and showrunner Jill Soloway had previously said she wasn’t sure how to continue the series without Tambor, and considered “it might be easier just to stop,” before settling on the musical finale idea.

Five years after Amazon’s award-winning series Transparent became one of the most visible dramatizations of trans life, the series will kill off its central character, Maura Pfefferman, in its feature-length musical series finale. Transparent creator Jill Soloway has revealed Jeffrey Tambor’s character Maura will be killed off in the Amazon Studios series’ musical finale.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Soloway confirmed the final episode will begin with the passing of Maura and will follow the Pfefferman family — Shelly (Judith Light), Sarah (Amy Landecker), Josh (Jay Duplass), and Ali (Gaby Hoffmann) — as they all try to come to terms with the loss.
It’s not a big surprise, following the firing of Tambor last year following accusations of sexual misconduct.
“We were all in mourning in many ways, and we all had to process together,” Soloway told The Times about the decision to kill off the character. “It was important [for the show] to go through all those stages. The show has always been a reflection of who we were and we were mourning our own narrative.”

Whatever you do, don’t bet against Jill Soloway. The creator of Amazon Studios’ first major hit show and a game changer for transgender visibility, Soloway will conclude “Transparent” without her central character and the Emmy-winning actor who embodied her. Speculation abounds as to how Soloway will pull off a movie musical finale of the series, Soloway’s creative solution to the firing of Jeffrey Tambor after multiple women accused him of sexual harassment and/or assault in the fall of 2017.
Amazon Studios has released a first batch of photos for the musical finale of “Transparent,” which Soloway has described as “a show that always wanted to be a musical.” Amazon also revealed the title of the feature-length episode: “The Transparent Musicale Finale.”
“The episode begins with the passing of Maura,” read an Amazon release, “and will follow the Pfefferman family as they come together in their grief and celebrate her life.

Transparent will wrap its fifth and final season with a feature-length musical episode. Jill Soloway, creator of the acclaimed series, told the New York Times that they’re aiming to craft the piece as “Jesus Christ Superstar mixed with La La Land mixed with Flight of the Conchords with something more Jewish thrown in. A little Yentl.”
Soloway detailed their process behind the episode, noting that they have been collaborating on music with their sister Faith and transgender actress-musician Shakina Nayfack (who plays Lola on Hulu’s Difficult People).

It looks like Transparent is going to end season 5 — and the series — with a musical bang.
Series creator Jill Soloway told the New York Times that the Emmy-winning Amazon drama will be getting the musical treatment. Soloway has been working with their sister Faith on music with trans actress Shakina Nayfack, who is known for her role as Lola on Difficult People and also her music.
