Lana Del Rey has confirmed she has a new album in the works and this time it’s a little bit country. The singer announced the LP, Lasso, at Billboard’s pre-Grammy event in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
During the event, Del Rey took the stage to fete producer Jack Antonoff, who is her collaborator on the new album. “If you can’t already tell by our award winners and our performers, the music business is going country,” she told the crowd. “We’re going country. It’s happening.

Lana Del Rey wants some man named Henry to at least try to be a little bit serious. On Thursday morning, the singer and songwriter previewed an unreleased song on Instagram with the caption: “Henry, Come On.” The brief snippet found the singer slipping into the role of a frustrated country/folk singer, crooning: “Do you think I’d really choose it? All of this off and on? Henry come on.”
From the sound of it, Henry lacks both seriousness and accountability. “Baby come on, do you think I’d really lose it on ya?...

When Jake Owen announced the track list for his upcoming album Loose Cannon, his first in four years, one song’s writing credits stood out above all the others: “On the Boat Again” is credited to Devin Dawson, Kyle Fishman, Rocky Block, Blake Pendergrass and…Willie Nelson. It’s easy to hear why.
“On the Boat Again” borrows the chorus melody of Nelson’s 1980 touring anthem “On the Road Again,” changing the lyrics to summon that most cherished of Southern weekend outings: boat day. “On the boat again/I just...

Kacey Musgraves is the country artist behind ‘Somebody to Love,” saying that the creative process “brought tears to [her] eyes.” Here’s what we learned about Pageant Material’s original track.

She’s just a little kid looking for love. “Somebody to Love” was released by Musgraves on her 2015 album Pageant Material.
This song connects the narrator to others searching for love. The singer notes that everyone is “hopeless” — “We’re all flawed, and we’re all perfect.” More than anything, we’re all looking for somebody to love.
“We’re all good, but we ain’t angels,” Musgraves sings in the chorus. “We all sin, but we ain’t devils / We’re all pots and we’re all kettles / But we can’t see...

As society progresses, we’ve seen increasing acceptance of queer artists in the music industry, particularly in the past decade. While there have always been queer artists making iconic music — from Tchaikovsky to Wendy Carlos to K.D. Lang — these past few years have shown a great influx in not only the number of out artists, but also explicitly queer themes in their music. As such, the Grammys, self-described as music’s biggest night, have also evolved in their treatment of LGBTQ+ artists. And 2022 could be a banner year.
The 2022 Grammys already mark an important milestone for queer musicians. For Record of the Year, three openly queer artists are nominated. Lady Gaga, who’s bisexual, is nominated for her joyous jazz collaboration “I Get A Kick Out Of You” with Tony Bennett. Brandi Carlile, a lesbian, is nominated once again in this category with “Right On Time,” following her Record of...

Thomas Rhett is the latest country singer to go big with plans for a double album. The project’s first half, Country Again: Side A, will be available April 30th and includes the lead single “What’s Your Country Song,” along with two newly released tracks, “Growing Up” and “Want It Again.”
Where several of Rhett’s hit singles over the last few years have leaned toward the progressive edge of pop production and songcraft, “Growing Up” almost sounds like an obscurity plucked from the back half of a forgotten Nineties album.

Just a few weeks ahead of the release of his much-anticipated second album Southside, Sam Hunt premieres the video to his latest single, “Hard to Forget,” which samples Webb Pierce’s 1953 country weeper “There Stands the Glass.”
The video begins with Hunt singing along to the Pierce sample, before seguing into a montage of colorful characters who are staying at a motel: a circus clown, two brawling card players, a cowboy with a goat.
“Hard to Forget” is slowly climbing up the country radio charts, not long after “Kinfolks” became Hunt’s latest Number One.

One morning last fall, Luke Laird was eating breakfast and listening to one of his favorite Apple Music playlists, Honky-Tonk Essentials. When Webb Pierce’s 1953 hit “There Stands the Glass” started playing, Laird had a strange thought.
“I was like man, ‘What if I made a beat and sample that?’” he thought to himself.
After breakfast, he recorded a crude 13-second voice memo in a Nashville parking lot, in which the hit songwriter (“Pontoon,” “Drink in My Hand”) hummed the melody of Pierce’s chorus while beatboxing a rough sketch of a beat.

Add it to the list of left turns from the enigmatic country artist — Sam Hunt’s new track “Hard to Forget” opens with a lengthy sample of 1950s honky-tonk star Webb Pierce‘s classic “There Stands the Glass.”
Apart from the fact that it samples a 67-year-old country song, “Hard to Forget,” the latest preview of his recently-announced album Southside, also feels like the most obvious radio-friendly hit from the “Body Like a Back Road” singer, following the more downbeat, introspective releases “Sinning With You” and “Kinfolks.”

“I’m a ghost on the radio,” sings Jon Pardi in “Call Me Country,” a swaying, steel-drenched track that arrives near the end of his new album Heartache Medication. Name-checking his country-music heroes like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard, the California native places himself in the same lineage — both as preservationist and rule-breaker. Freight trains, prisons, honk-tonks, and cowboys are all here, lamented as relics. “They used to call me country,” Pardi concludes, upholding one tradition even as he weeps for its loss.

Last year Bruno Mars was the king of the Grammy Awards winning all six of his races. This year, one of the artists he bested for many of those prizes, Kendrick Lamar, leads with a whopping eight nominations. Many of these bids come for his work on the “Black Panther” soundtrack and the chart-topping single “All the Stars.” Likewise, Lady Gaga earned four nominations for “Shallow,” the love ballad from her film “A Star is Born.” Both of their songs also contend at the Academy Awards.
The four general field categories — Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist — are the top prizes at the Grammys. While the nominees are drawn from across a variety of music genres, the winners of these Grammy Awards tend to be the biggest pop and rock acts like Mars, Adele, Taylor Swift, and Mumford and Sons.

When Eric Church’s debut album Sinners Like Me hit in 2006, it signaled a brash new direction for country music. Here was an artist who, although leaning heavily on rock & roll, maintained a foothold in country, especially with his enlightened workingman lyricism. Naturally, Church evolved over his next four albums, embracing both harder sounds and a more singer-songwriter vibe that culminated with the surprise release Mr. Misunderstood in 2015 (he’ll further his catalog with the new Desperate Man on October 5th).
