Exclusive: Saban Films has taken multiple rights including domestic on The Aviary, the thriller starring Billions actress Malin Akerman, and will debut in 2022.
The company has picked up North America and South Africa on the pic, along with the UK and Ireland and Australia and New Zealand, which will be distributed via Saban’s local partners Altitude Media Group and Defiant Screen Entertainment respectively.
Written and directed by first-time filmmakers Chris Cullari and Jennifer Raite, the pic also stars Lorenza Izzo (Women is Losers), Chris Messina (I Care a Lot) and Sandrine Holt (Sorry for Your Loss). The story follows two women who flee into the southwest desert to escape the clutches of an insidious cult. Consumed by fear and paranoia, they can’t shake the feeling that they are being followed by its leader, a man as seductive as he is controlling.

Saban Films is getting in the Nicolas Cage business.
The studio has acquired “Butcher’s Crossing,” a frontier epic that stars the off-beat, Oscar winner as a buffalo hunter. The deal covers rights in North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavia.
Gabe Polsky, who directed the documentary “Red Penguins,” slides behind the camera on this one. He wrote the script, as well. It’s an adaptation of a novel by John Williams. The film is produced by Polsky and Molly Conners of Phiphen Pictures alongside Will Clarke and Andy Mayson for Altitude Film Entertainment and Cage’s Saturn Films. Ingenious Media is funding, with Peter Touche, Jamie Jessop and Christelle Conan executive producing. Principal photography will begin this fall.

Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg star in the story of a young couple in search of the perfect starter home. Saban Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Derrick Borte’s drama “American Dreamer,” starring comedian Jim Gaffigan in his leading-man debut.
“American Dreamer,” which premiered in September at the Los Angeles Film Festival, follows a down-on-his-luck rideshare driver who makes extra cash chauffeuring a low-level drug dealer around town. He soon finds himself in a serious financial bind and decides to kidnap the dealer’s child. As the night grows darker, tensions build as he escorts the drug dealer in search of the missing kid.

Saban Films has made one of the first acquisitions of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, buying the rights to the sexual abuse drama “Romans” starring Orlando Bloom, the studio announced Thursday.
Directed by Ludwig and Paul Shammasian, the film stars Bloom as a man struggling to cope with the sexual abuse he suffered as a child at the hands of a priest, and who now has the opportunity to demolish the church where his abuse occurred.
The drama is written by Geoff Thompson, who previously worked with the Shammasians on “The Pyramid Texts,” and produced by Jasper Graham of Dreamscape along with James Harris and Mark Lane of The Fyzz Facility and Sheetal Vinod Talwar of Vistaar Film Fund, in association with Zee International.

The action-thriller marks the fifth collaboration between Van Damme and Lundgren and follows a framed secret operative who enlists the help of a fellow prisoner and an amateur agent as he attempts to escape from a CIA submarine.
Chad Law wrote Black Water based on a story by Law, Konney and Richard Switzer and is produced by Jason Cherubini, Alexander Ferguson, Tyler W. Konney and Switzer for Dawn’s Light Productions.

Saban Films has picked up North American rights to the action comedy Killing Gunther starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Taran Killam directed and stars alongside the former California governor, who plays a showboating hitman who becomes the target of a group of jealous fellow assassins.
Production just wrapped on the project financed by StarStream Media and Ingenious Media. Imr International handles international sales and Saban plans a theatrical release later this year.

Saban Films has acquired North American rights from WWE Studios to John Stockwell’s Armed Response starring Wesley Snipes, Anne Heche, WWE superstar Seth Rollins and Kiss band member Gene Simmons.
The sci-fi thriller, written by Matt Savelloni, follows a team of operatives attempting to discover the fate of a previous unit when they become trapped inside a military compound. Voltage Pictures handles international sales.
The film stars and Dave Annable and is currently in post-production. WWE Studios president Michael Luisi produced with Simmons via their Erebus Pictures banner.
Bill Bromiley, Ness Saban and Jonathan Saba negotiated the deal on behalf of Saban Films.

The distributor announced at the Efm it has picked up North American rights to Tim Smit’s sci-fi starring Dan Stevens and Bérénice Marlohe.
The sci-fi is based on Smit’s short What’s In The Box? and takes place in a futuristic world where a pilot battles to save his family when an energy experiment goes wrong.
Patrick Chu produced for FilmNation alongside Smit, and Sander Verdonk and Denis Wigman for Ctm Films.
FilmNation’s Aaron Ryder and Milan Popelka are executive producers with SquareOne Entertainment’s Al Munteanu, RainMaker Films’ Clay Pecorin and Russell Geyser, and Thibaut Niels.
“Smit’s previous work in VFX is evident throughout this film, and his experience working within the action and sci-fi genre takes his feature debut to a spectacular level,” Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley said.
“This will be a unique film that will captivate our audiences with its heavy visuals and thought-provoking plotlines.”

The Last Face is set against the backdrop of war-torn Liberia and stars Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem as an aid agency chief who falls in love with a doctor amid a humanitarian crisis.
Adèle Exarchopoulos, Jean Reno and Jared Harris round out the cast and Erin Dignam wrote the screenplay.
