Pop Culture Collaborative, the philanthropic fund working to transform the narratives harming Black and Indigenous people, people of color, immigrants and refugees, Muslims, and religiously diverse people in America, announcef its 2024-2025 Becoming America Network grantees.
Through this grant program, 45 entertainment projects using storytelling to drive narrative change will receive funding totaling over $4 million. Each network member receives a grant ranging from $25,000 to $75,000, access to a range of in-person and virtual network gatherings, and the opportunity to apply for rapid response funding.
In 2020, the Pop Culture Collaborative launched Becoming America, a multimillion-dollar fund supporting artists, producers, movement organizations, and cultural organizers to ignite public yearning for a just and pluralist nation where everyone belongs. First announced in May at the Gold Gala, the lavish fete thrown by Gold House, which partnered with SeeHer to develop the Api resource, the guide offers detailed lists of questions and points to consider, designed to get creatives to consider the diversity within Api womanhood as well as overplayed tropes (i.e. model minorities, tiger moms, dragon ladies, perpetual foreigners), covering subject areas including language, family, religion, career paths, skin tone and intersectionality.

March 31 marks the final day of Women’s History Month and it is also Transgender Day of Visibility. To mark this occasion and further strengthen the voices of the trans community, GLAAD released an open letter signed by over 190 feminist leaders in advocacy, business, entertainment, media, politics, and social justice standing in solidarity with transgender women and girls.
The letter, organized by GLAAD and Raquel Willis, comes in response to the ongoing hateful and discriminatory rhetoric and attacks facing trans people, especially trans women, and is clearly a loud statement of solidarity between cisgender women, trans women, and feminist allies for everyone to hear.

GLAAD held their very first virtual edition of its GLAAD Media Awards and it was just as spirited and entertaining as if we were in person kiki’ing and honoring media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. From The Bold Type to Good Trouble to Shadowhunters to grown-ish, Freeform prides themselves with their slate of shows that put inclusion and representation of marginalized communities on full display — and the Freeform Summit unapologetically celebrated that on Wednesday night with a series of panels that not only showcased their series but the social issues in the real world that they reflect.
With so much talk about diversity, inclusion, and representation in Hollywood, it seems that there’s a lot of lip service but not many TV studios aren’t taking much action, and if they do, it’s not fully realized and lacks authenticity. Geared towards millennial audiences — or people who just seek change in the world — Freeform makes diversity, inclusion and representation more than just buzzwords.
