Alice Winocour on Disorder: "I thought also about Carpenter's films, the sound."
Following her enticing and spirited debut, Augustine, Alice Winocour again proves that she can package troubled states of mind in lush images and strong plots. Vincent: "What is frightening for the character is to not have control over his own body."

Matthias Schoenaerts is a virile yet sensitive soldier who takes a security job in this patchily skilful drama
The seemingly ubiquitous Belgian actor and all-round arthouse stud-muffin Matthias Schoenaerts (whose virile yet sensitive mug was recently seen in A Bigger Splash, The Danish Girl and A Little Chaos) stars here as a virile yet sensitive soldier suffering from Ptsd and mild hearing loss. On extended leave from the army in the south of France, he takes a security job looking after the beautiful but somehow sad Euro wife (Diane Kruger) of an uber-rich Lebanese businessman and the couple’s adorable moppet son (Zaïd Errougui-Demonsant) while the husband goes on a mysterious business trip. Although as a thriller this is sort of tosh, with illogical plot holes you could drive a luxury SUV through, writer-director Alice Winocour and whoever was in charge of sound design do a great job at suggesting...

This film is formerly known as Maryland, and has been retitled to Disorder for the release in the UK. A new UK trailer has debuted online for this drama from last year's Cannes Film Festival starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger, directed by French filmmaker Alice Winocour. The cast includes Zaïd Errougui-Demonsant and Jean-Louis Coulloc'h. The story follows Vincent, an ex-soldier with Ptsd hired as personal security for the wife and child of a wealthy Lebanese businessman. This seems to be as much about Ptsd (the D from here is likely where the new title is from) as it is actual threats to the family. Take a look. Here's the new UK trailer for Alice Winocour's Disorder, originally debuted by Empire: Vincent (Matthias Schoenaerts) is an ex-soldier with Ptsd who is hired to protect the wife and child of a wealthy Lebanese businessman while he's out of town. Despite the apparent tranquility on Maryland,...

Kieran, here reporting from AFI Fest in Hollywood.
There's a moment of in Alice Winocour's Disorder (French title Maryland) where Jessie (played by Diane Kruger) tentatively and almost wordlessly embraces Vincent (Matthias Schoenaerts) from behind. It's a brief, but completely earned emotional beat, perfectly emblematic of the film's power. The film is billed as a "home invasion thriller," a description that betrays Disorder's rich textures and laser-like focus on character.
Vincent is a former soldier turned security guard working at a villa in France, inhabited by Imad, a wealthy businessman (Percy Kemp), his wife, Jessie and their young son, Ali (Zaïd Errougui-Demonsant). Vincent is suffering from Ptsd and auditory problems, a result of his time in combat, which leads to bouts of paranoia. After some kind of international business deal goes awry while Imad is out of the country, Jessie and Ali become the target of hitmen, with Vincent left to protect them.

A pair of sections that we’ve been covering almost since its inception, the American Film Institute (AFI) announced their selections for the New Auteurs and American Independents line-ups and we’ve got a noteworthy, eyebrow-raising sampling of award-winning items from the Cannes played hellish immigration drama Mediterranea from Jonas Carpignano to Sundance (Josh Mond’s James White) to SXSW (Trey Edward Shults’ Krisha) winners. Since Park City days, our Nicholas Bell has reviewed a good chunk of these titles, but we’ll still likely have a couple of more reviews once the festival begins. Here are the selections and jury members.
