Before that, creator Steven Knight took to the red carpet to celebrate and promote his new BBC programme This Town. While there, Birmingham World asked the Peaky Blinders creator the question: will Cillian Murphy return as Tommy Shelby for the big screen adaptation of the hit TV show?
“He definitely is returning for it,” Knight told the outlet. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.”
Murphy just won the Oscar for Best Actor for his turn in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Oppenheimer. He’s also due to appear in Tim Mielants’ Small Things Like These later this year.

It looks like we haven’t seen the last of gangster Tommy Shelby after all. Speaking to Birmingham World at the premiere of his new BBC drama “The Town,” “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight confirmed that recent Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will be reprising his beloved role in the upcoming film version of the British crime drama. Knight said Murphy is “definitely” coming back, and filming on the “Peaky Blinders” movie kicks off this September.
“He definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth,” Knight confirmed.
Variety has reached out to Murphy’s representatives for additional comment.
Murphy’s apparent return as Tommy Shelby for the “Peaky Blinders” movie isn’t too much of a shock considering the “Oppenheimer” star has long been vocal about his interest in starring in a “Peaky Blinders” film as long as the script was worthy enough.

Cillian Murphy is currently wreaking havoc in Hollywood. After his fan-favorite role as Tommy Shelby, which made him a heartthrob overnight, he has delivered yet another mind-blowing (or atom-bomb-blowing!) performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer, becoming the entertainment industry’s newest hotshot — to the point where he is even being eyed to play James Bond!

According to recent reports by insiders, Murphy is apparently being eyed by producers who are all set to start the next Bond movie. While Murphy would be an iconic choice, no doubt, what’s surprising is the fact that he is being considered for the peerless spy role at 47 years of age while Henry Cavill was deemed too old to play Agent 007 even at the age of 40!

“Oppenheimer” dominated Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, but the most explosive category was lead actress. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down the SAG Awards results and what they mean for the Oscars.

BBC drama boss Lindsay Salt has candidly floated the notion that the industry has moved from “peak TV to peak caution,” as she details an ambition to “help reshape the drama landscape at a critical time.”
Addressing producers and press for the first time since taking on the nation’s biggest drama commissioning job, Salt reflected on a decade since the phrase “peak TV” first entered the lexicon, raising concerns over “short-termism” and that “the big bets of the boom era are a thing of the past.”
“We’ve seen buyers retreat into cautious commissioning spaces,” said Salt. “The industry as a whole has become – dare I say it – a little fearful.”
Expanding her point, Salt said “financial pressures and commercial imperatives” have led buyers to “default to safe bets.”
She cited “inflation, content and platform saturation, retrenchment and the writers strike” as the key factors leading to “peak caution,...

Cillian Murphy, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is a terrific Irish actor who The New York Times has said is “known for his electrifying, typecast-defying turns in a range of movies, big and small.” Backstage has called him “a chameleonic performer, a character actor trapped in a leading man’s bone structure.” Interview magazine has noted he has had a tremendously impressive career but “is still somehow cruelly underrated, and only getting better.”
Murphy’s standout film credits include 2002’s 28 Days Later; 2005’s Breakfast on Pluto, for which he received a best musical/comedy actor Golden Globe nom; and 2021’s A Quiet Place, Part II. Warning: contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders series six episode six “Lock and Key”.
It’s almost two years since Tommy Shelby disappeared over the horizon on a white horse, having dismantled the life he’d spent over a decade building through blood and strategising. Where Cillian Murphy’s character rode to after the credits rolled on Peaky Blinders finale “Lock and Key” is anybody’s guess, a question mark that Murphy adores.
Speaking to Lauren Laverne for BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs a month before the 2024 Academy Awards ceremony, Murphy – who received a Best Actor nomination for Oppenheimer – praised Peaky Blinders’ inconclusive finale, telling Laverne: “I felt like we’d done such excellent work and I really loved the ambiguity of the ending.”
Leaving behind the character of Tommy Shelby, Murphy continued, “was a little bit of a relief at that point. I was ready to take a little break.

Cillian Murphy may be the hot favourite to win Best Actor at next month’s Oscars, but he has revealed he wasn’t the first choice for his breakthrough TV role.
Murphy played family patriarch Tommy Shelby in global hit period drama Peaky Blinders, but he revealed this week he wasn’t writer Stephen Knight’s first choice for the lead role.
He told the BBC’s Desert Island Discs radio interview show: “I wasn’t the obvious choice physically. I don’t know if I convinced Stephen in the meeting, but apparently afterwards I sent him a text that said: ‘Remember, I am an actor.’ And I do believe that. I do think it is our duty as actors to transform to whatever the part demands.”

Cillian Murphy might be enjoying his well-earned victory lap after putting in a genuinely award-worthy performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's latest effort, but some roles are difficult to let go of completely. The actor has built up a formidable career playing all sorts of oddball figures, from the villainous Jonathan "Scarecrow" Crane in Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy to an outright villain in director Wes Craven's sneakily good "Red Eye" to a pair of loners desperate to survive in both "Sunshine" and "28 Days Later". One character in particular, however, has proven his staying power with Murphy over the years: Tommy Shelby in the BBC/Netflix series "Peaky Blinders."
To nobody's surprise, the gun-slinging, cigarette-puffing gangster steadily became a fan-favorite (and dare I say a genuine pop culture icon) throughout the show's six total seasons, winning hearts and minds over to his cause despite our better judgment.

The TV series "Peaky Blinders" officially ended its six-season run in April of 2022, and it has been announced that there will be a feature film (a sort of unofficial seventh season). "Peaky Blinders" was set in Birmingham just after World War I and followed the rise of a street gang, the Peaky Blinders, as their crime empire grew over the course of a decade. While the gang in the series is fictional, there was a real-life street gang called the Peaky Blinders which operated in Birmingham from the 1880s to the 1910s. The name "Peaky Blinders" has been said to refer to the razors that the gang members would supposedly stitch into their trademark peaked caps. They would then, so armed, headbutt attackers, stabbing them in the eyes and blinding them. Peaky blinders. This story, however, is debated.
Cillian Murphy played the lead character on "Peaky Blinders," a ruffian named Tommy Shelby.

Peaky Blinders — the BBC series that ran from 2013 to 2022 — concluded after nine years and six seasons. Through the six seasons of Peaky Blinders, we saw Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) start out as a World War I veteran and cunning leader of the Peaky Blinders gang — who eventually and ambitiously expanded his criminal empire from Birmingham to London. As the series progressed, he rose to political power as a Member of Parliament, grappling with his moral conflicts and the psychological scars of war. Although the BBC series concluded, the remaining story of Thomas Shelby is yet...

However, the character was killed off in season 3 of the series; hence, his return has intrigued the fans’ interest. Apart from that, the upcoming season will introduce two new series.
Nathan Mitchell portrayed the character of Black Noir, which had a different origin from the comic book. Although the makers of this popular series have been faithful to the material, they strayed off in the case of Mitchell’s character. The new supes...

When Cillian Murphy Smoked 3000 Cigarettes For His Role As Tommy Shelby In Peaky Blinders(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Cillian Murphy has established himself as an accomplished actor with his films in Hollywood. He might as well get his first Oscar for this year’s Oppenheimer. The actor is like Hollywood’s Dark Horse, who has an excellent grip on the dark and gritty genre, and his Peaky Blinders series receives a lot of love and appreciation from the viewers. Murphy is very devoted to his craft; he left vegetarianism for his role in the British crime series and allegedly smoked thousands of cigarettes for it, too. Yes, you read that right. Cillian puffed on numerous ciggies for his role as Tommy Shelby.
The television series is a British period crime drama set in Birmingham. It is about a gang led by Murphy’s Tommy Shelby, who sews razor blades in the...

Peaky Blinders debuted its sixth season over a year ago, but will the BBC period drama return for Season 7?
The sixth season of Peaky Blinders concluded with the destruction of the Shelby family mansion, a close-call aborted suicide attempt from Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby, and the introduction of his son, Duke, into the family business.
This all came after the death of Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray, revealed to have happened off-screen in the Season 6 premiere, which came due to the passing of Harry Potter star Helen McCrory during production.

Stories from the sets of notoriously particular filmmaker Christopher Nolan are always entertaining, and the new book "Unleashing Oppenheimer: Inside Christopher Nolan's Explosive Atomic-Age Thriller" is full of them. Jada Yuan's behind-the-scenes look at the making of the blockbuster historical drama features an assortment of surprising tidbits, including one about, believe it or not, an excruciatingly long haircut.
Strange as it sounds, fans of Cillian Murphy are no stranger to stories about the actor's hair. When Murphy worked on "Peaky Blinders," he said he was "alarmed by" the signature closely shaved undercut style his character Tommy Shelby sported in the show, noting he was "contractually obligated" to stick with the style. Couple an actor who understandably has opinions on his own hair with a director who's famous for his at times excruciating attention to detail, and apparently you get a five-hour haircut. According to Yuan, Murphy started the production with longer hair,...

Look beyond the flashes of cathartic violence, the numerous double-dealing and betrayals, and the relentless quest for power featured throughout every season of "Peaky Blinders," and it's plain to see that the entire BBC series boils down to a very simple and straightforward concept. At its heart, the arc of Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby is about a man who has been completely unable to come to terms with the trauma inflicted upon him during wartime. Much of the early seasons of the hit show focuses on the crime lord's Ptsd-caused flashbacks to his time serving as a tunneler for the British army in World War I. Although he and his regiment saved countless lives, his horrific near-death experiences left him a shell of the man he used to be ... and, in effect, every single one of his actions throughout the series stems from this one event.

You just never know what quirky aspects of a long-running television show will begin to take on a life of its own over the course of the series. In "Peaky Blinders" alone, much has already been made of the frankly horrifying amount of herbal cigarettes the cast had to smoke throughout each season, or the somewhat shocking reveal that those distinctive hats worn by the Peaky Blinders weren't actually all that historically accurate to the real-life gang. But there's one oddity in particular that stood out to lead actor Cillian Murphy in the early going, which soon transformed into a running gag that everyone was in on.
If you ever noticed during your viewing of seasons 1 and 2 of "Peaky Blinders" that the gang ringleader Tommy Shelby never actually ate a lick of food -- despite several scenes taking place in dining rooms and bars with plenty of options to choose from -- you're not alone.
