Exclusive: LuckyChap and Indian Paintbrush have teamed to option rights to Olivia Gatwood’s debut novel Whoever You Are, Honey. It will publish via The Dial Press in July 2024.
Gatwood is also set to adapt her book into a feature script.
Whoever You Are, Honey takes place on the Santa Cruz waterfront and centers on a young woman and her elderly roommate, an oddball pair who are the last vestiges of a town taken over by the tech elite. But when a new couple moves in next door, the young woman’s once secluded existence is irrevocably disrupted, and she is forced to face the fact that on the outskirts of Silicon Valley, nothing is off-limits, and what was once considered dystopia is now a reality in her own backyard.

Without question, one of the most striking and gorgeous directorial debuts of the last few years was filmmaker Joe Talbot’s Sundance-adored picture “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” starring Jonathan Majors. A24 released that picture, and given all the acclaim, it’s no surprise the indie studio is backing his follow-up sophomore effort. According to Variety, the film is based on the novel “The Governesses” by French author Anne Serre with Talbot co-writing the movie with poet-novelist Olivia Gatwood.

Following her Best Actress win at Cannes Film Festival last year, we knew great things were destined for Renate Reinsve, but the question of what The Worst Person in the World star will do next was up in the air. Now, it’s finally been announced.
Deadline reports Reinsve will star alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Squid Game breakout Hoyeon Jung in The Governess, the second feature from Joe Talbot (The Last Black Man in San Francisco). Reteaming with A24, the film is an adaptation of Anne Serre’s 2018 novel, following “three rebellious governesses who upend the household they work in—inspiriting the minds of the boys in their care, igniting the imaginations of the bohemian couple who employ them and abandoning their charges for erotic adventures.”
Adapted by Talbot and Olivia Gatwood, see the book’s full synopsis below via Amazon:

If the lack of steamy sex scenes in "Bridgerton" season two left you parched, Joe Talbot's new A24 movie, "The Governesses," is here to quench your thirst. The movie, which is Talbot's sophomore film after 2019's "The Last Black Man in San Francisco", will star "Wolf's" Lily-Rose Depp, "Squid Game's" HoYeon," and "The Worst Person in the World's" Renate Reinsve as three French nannies who decide to let loose and explore their sexualities.
The announcement comes shortly after the independent entertainment company released its upcoming horror film, "X," in March and shared details for an intended prequel film, "Pearl." With a record number of 10,397 submissions, the 2020 Sundance Film Festival short film programmers undertook a herculean task to narrow the official selections down to 74 narrative, animated, and documentary shorts. After previewing 45 official selections made available for advance press screening, IndieWire culled 10 of the most artistically compelling, dramatically surprising, and emotionally resonate pieces. The filmmakers were then emailed and asked to share their inspiration and what they are working on next.
