It’s a tale as old as time — the heartwrenching, steam-inducing, bodice-clenching story of a woman falling head over heels in love with a man who’s more red flag than person. Except in the case of the best-selling book A Court Of Thorns And Roses and its subsequent series, author Sarah J Maas didn’t just use these tropes to establish herself in the romance market— she used fairy porn to revive an entire subgenre of publishing.

Hulu’s TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’s romantasy book series “A Court of Thorns and Roses” has not been scrapped — yet. A Monday report said it is not moving forward at the streamer, and indeed its longterm fate at the streamer appears to be extremely murky.
TVLine reported the news that the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” TV series is no longer in the works at Hulu and that it was also not being shopped to other platforms. Variety‘s earlier story reported the series as scrapped based on initial remarks from sources, but Variety has now been told that technically the show is still in development at Hulu. But that’s semantics, as it is believed to no longer be in active development — which means it’s unclear what the fate of the project will be.

If you’ve paid any attention to the fantasy fiction section of your local bookstore, you’ve probably heard of Sarah J. Maas. Her books have sold over 13 million copies, she’s a fixture at the top of the New York Times bestseller list, and her complex stories have given rise to the sort of rabid fandom that lends itself to eager YouTube discourse, complicated reader theories about its characters and larger universe, and a bustling Etsy economy of assorted themed fan-made products. People that love Maas’s books, love her books. People who don’t love her books…probably just haven’t read them yet.
Though her first series, Throne of Glass, was published in 2012, it wasn’t until her second, A Court of Thorns and Roses began in 2015 that she became a crossover sensation. Thanks to its feisty heroine, its Beauty and the Beast-inspired narrative framing, and the rich,...

One of the most resonant issues on the table in the ongoing Writers Guild of America contract negotiations has turned out to be one of the hardest to define: mini rooms.
Rising to the top of writers’ concerns in bargaining with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is the rapid growth in the use of so-called mini rooms in the development and production of TV series. Yet ask anyone around town to define what constitutes a mini room, and answers vary greatly.
While traditional writers’ rooms consist of seven or eight writers, a mini room is often “a miniaturized writers’ room,” one TV exec says. “We’ll hire two to three additional writers to help our showrunner crack the first two to three scripts, after the pilot is written.”

Spoilers for episode 6 of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
Love comes to Middle-earth! In episode 6 of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," all that tension between Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) and Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi) has finally resulted in a smooch. That's pretty chaste as today's TV series go, but the glances and stares between these two have practically melted the screen. This series is full of longing and stares that seem to mean much more than words. Let's examine Bronwyn and Arondir, and Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and, well, a couple of people.
High fantasy -- the subgenre that is epic in its scope, often set in another world, and often filled with elves and other such creatures -- can often eschew the sexual side of things. Not always, as anyone who has read Sarah J. Maas novels can tell you, but often. Instead of jumping into bed,...

Hayden Panettiere is back on the "Scream 6" set, and her costar Jasmin Savoy Brown shared a behind-the-scenes look at the actor getting ready to film the franchise's sixth film in a BeReal post. The snap included a look at Panettiere reading a book ("A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas) while waiting for hair and makeup. "Will Mindy & Kirby be friends?? Hayden thinks yes, I think no," Brown captioned the post, referring to Panettiere's character, Kirby Reed, who nearly died in "Scream 4."
Panettiere's return to the Scream franchise was announced back in May followed by the news that Neve Campbell, the original face of the films, would not be returning as Sidney Prescott. "As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to 'Scream,'" she said in a statement.

Andrew J. Graff's debut novel Raft of Stars (out March 23) is a dark, heart-pounding adventure following two boys just old enough to realize that there's real danger lurking in the trees, but it's not the kind that can hurt them most. The year is 1994, and 10-year-old Dale "Bread" Breadwin lives in terror of his drunk, abusive father in their small house at the edge of the Northwoods. He escapes by spending as much time as possible with his best friend, Fischer "Fish" Branson, who lives at his grandfather's farm every summer, dodging his own ghosts.
The tense tranquility falls apart one night when Fish lashes out in defense of his friend and both boys plunge into the forest with a dangerously incomplete understanding of what they've just done. Following in their wake are a ragged group of adults, including a sheriff questioning the profession to which he's dedicated his life...

Exclusive: One of DC’s first female superheroes is getting the Ya book treatment. Author Alexandra Monir is set to write the first-ever novel about the popular superheroine Black Canary in Black Canary: Breaking Silence. Random House Books will publish the book on December 29.
Black Canary: Breaking Silence marks the fifth book in the DC Icons series which includes Leigh Bardugo’s Wonder Woman: Warbringer, Marie Lu’s Batman: Nightwalker, Sarah J. Maas’s Catwoman: Soulstealer and Matt de la Pena’s Superman: Dawnbreaker.
The upcoming Black Canary story is set in a near-future Gotham City where the patriarchal Court of Owls rules and where women are denied the right to work, learn and make music. They have been stripped of everything. At 7 years old, Dinah Lance hears the sound of a girl singing — something she was never meant to hear. Fast-forward 10 years later and Dinah discovers the power of...

Teenage Superman stumbles on a Smallville mystery in this exclusive preview.
Teenage Superman is fertile ground for character work. For writers looking for a challenge that fits the character, a Superman who hasn't yet developed his powers or his moral code makes for more realistic, more relatable conflict. That's why Superman was probably a perfect fit for the DC Icons book series, a collection of young adult stories featuring DC superheroes. And that's why we're pretty psyched to be hosting an exclusive preview of Superman: Dawnbreaker, the upcoming Superman-centric book in that line coming out in February.
"Writing a Superman novel is one of the greatest thrills of my writing career," said Matt de la Peña, the book's author. "This project allowed me to set foot in one of the most iconic American storylines, while also enabling me to team up witht hree writers I've long...

Our ongoing roundup of the best serial fiction out there has just been updated with lots of new entries!
Serial fiction has come a long way since Dickens was writing--and publishing--it in the 1800s. Whether they draw on the style of Dickens, modeling after that popular serial storytelling venue (your television), or playing a game of exquisite corpse, serials have come back in a big way, bringing bite sized chunks of prose to your e-reading device. Some are written by a team of writers in Hollywood style, some by a single author emulating that screen narrative format, and some by one author after another (and no one knows where the story will end until it does). Each of these writing styles brings a unique serial reading experience in a fantastic variety of genres. Whether your taste runs to historical fiction (Julian Fellowes's Belgravia), urban fantasy...
