Nico Parker (The Last of Us) delivers an impressive performance as a teenager struggling with more than her fair share of family trauma in writer/director Laura Chinn’s Suncoast. The R-rated drama is a deeply personal coming-of-age story based on Chinn’s own experiences growing up with a single mother and an older brother who passed away from cancer.
There’s a pivotal scene early on in Suncoast with Doris (Parker) ticking off a list of family members who are either dead or dying. She’s not angry or frustrated, just matter-of-fact about her family history. Wise beyond her 17 years, Doris has accepted that these circumstances are beyond her control.
That’s Doris. She doesn’t rage; she accepts her situation. She’ll be her brother’s caretaker and second fiddle in...

HBO Max has cooked up a slate of several classic films as well as a few newer ones arriving this January. “The Menu” (2022) arrived early in the month after releasing theatrically in November before Thanksgiving. Danny DeVito’s “Matilda” (1996) can contend with Netflix’s new movie musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book. And while Tom Hanks’ latest role “A Man Called Otto” has hit the box office, several of his films have landed at various streamers if you’re hankering for more after the tear-jearking feature film.
Hitting the sweet spot for dog movie lovers is “Marley and Me,” starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, and the animated wonder “The Book of Life” is also newly added.
Here are some of the best new movies to stream on HBO Max in January 2023.

The Menu is a film that defies easy description — it’s sinister, it’s scary, but it’s also funny, with a savage sense of humor and social commentary. Even the movie’s star, Ralph Fiennes, has had trouble figuring out what kind of a film it is. In fact, upon watching it a second time, Fiennes told us he saw it as a much different film than when he saw it the first time. Below we’ve run down the major new releases currently playing, from Oscar contenders to thrillers to blockbuster sequels.
Avatar: The Way of Water Disney
Over a decade after “Avatar” first hit theaters, James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel (the first of a planned four sequels in total) has arrived. And “Avatar: The Way of Water” is precisely the kind of movie for which movie theaters were made. This is an eye-popping, three-hour thrill ride that transports you to Pandora well beyond the sights and sounds of the first film. As the title suggests,...

Mark Mylod’s The Menu, from a script by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, has become one of Searchlight Pictures’ best success stories since its release last month, racking up the company’s biggest opening weekend since Slumdog Millionaire.
The recipe for the mix of chills and thrills that delight and terrify diners including Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer and John Leguizamo, has been carefully balanced by its director with all the precision of the dark head chef, Slowik, played with relish by Ralph Fiennes. And though Mylod will admit he is no foodie, it’s the precision of its satire on fine dining that bites the hardest.
Mylod’s name will be familiar to fans of Game of Thrones and Succession, for which he has directed multiple episodes (he is also an EP on Succession). His first feature in 11 years, released as he shoots Succession’s fourth season,...

In The Menu, Ralph Fiennes stars as the chef at a very exclusive island restaurant, and he runs a very tight kitchen. So, to prepare Fiennes for the kinds of situations his character would face as a chef, director Mark Mylod brought in a real elite chef to work with Fiennes on the set. Fiennes told us that he really appreciated the guidance and, even more importantly, the real sense of professionalism the chef brought to the film’s fictional kitchen. What should be a most divine dining experience for 11 individuals turns into a night of unexpected terror in Searchlight Pictures’ The Menu. The R-rated film from director Mark Mylod (Game of Thrones) is a dark, sharply crafted horror comedy with a wonderful ensemble cast.
The movie kicks off with the introduction of two of the diners – Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) – waiting on a dock to board a boat that will take them to a remote island. Their destination: Hawthorne, an exclusive restaurant that charges 1,250 a plate and promises to be worth every dollar.
Nine other guests join them onboard the boat including a past-his-prime movie star (John Leguizamo) and his lovely assistant (Aimee Carrero), Lillian; a pretentious food critic (Janet McTeer) and her brown-nosing editor (Paul Adelstein); Anne...

Anya Taylor-Joy in The Menu. Photo by Eric Zachanowich. Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. © 2022 20th Century Studios All Rights Reserved. The Menu may have the elements of a horror movie, yet it is a comedy at heart (albeit a dark one). That worked out well for Anya Taylor-Joy, who has made several horror movies (including two with M. Night Shyamalan) and a few dark comedies over the course of her career. So, when it came time to make The Menu, Taylor-Joy instinctively knew which ingredients to put into her performance to make the movie work. Nicholas Hoult (The Great) did a deep dive into the world of foodies to prepare for Searchlight Pictures’ twisted horror comedy The Menu. Hoult plays one of the guests at an exclusive – and isolated – restaurant who discovers his delicious meal comes at a higher price than anticipated.
“It was very difficult because I had to eat at nice restaurants and watch lots of food shows,” said Hoult, laughing. “It was one of those amazing things that the more of Chef’s Table I watched, the more that I was in awe and amazed by these singular-minded, dedicated chefs who committed their whole lives to their craft. And then I was starstruck because Dominique Crenn, who was the food advisor on the movie and designed the menu, she was on set one day and I’d seen her episode and I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s her!’

Director Mark Mylod and writers Seth Reiss and Will Tracy carefully construct a multi-course fine dining tasting menu of satirical delights and frights in The Menu. While the sophisticated and dry horror-comedy tantalizes with a feast for the senses and a compelling ensemble cast, The Menu‘s satire lacks bite.
Obsessed foodie Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) finally secured a coveted spot at the exclusive Hawthorne Island dining experience run by prestigious Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). The limited seating gets filled by billionaires, renowned food critics, and actors that don’t even bat an eye at the hefty price tag for haute cuisine. But then Tyler swaps in Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) as his last-minute plus one, creating a slight hiccup in the carefully curated menu for the evening. Only Margot seems capable of seeing beneath Chef’s pomp and circumstance to recognize a far more insidious game afoot.

Fox Searchlight Pictures’ Ready Or Not follows a young bride (Samara Weaving) as she joins her new husband’s (Mark O’Brien) rich, eccentric family in a time-honored tradition that turns into a lethal game with everyone fighting for their survival.
The filmmaking trio collectively known as Radio Silence, comprised of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, and executive producer Chad Villella, are known for their unique blending of comedy, adventure, and horror, with an eye for original screenplays that are comparably distinctive. For Ready Or Not, co-director Gillett talks about the idea of taking a conventional story to the extreme: “We loved the idea that you could take something that’s as familiar and relatable as marrying into a family and give it a genre bend in a playful way – but also in a dangerous and extreme way.”
