The invitation read “dress code: Fashion,” and guests at the second annual Fashion Trust U.S. Awards didn’t disappoint – with Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Jessica Biel, Andra Day, Awkwafina, Heidi Klum, Janelle Monaé and Kelsea Ballerini showing up in head-turning looks.
“Get ready for a wild night,” host Zooey Deschanel improvised, as she waited for the starry crowd to take their seats inside the tented dinner held in the backyard of a sprawling Beverly Hills estate on Tuesday. The actress kept things moving with a series of lighthearted jokes between awards. “It’s clear the world needs fashion more than ever because without fashion, all the problems of the world would still exist but everyone would be naked and naked is boring.”

At a dinner celebrating Thom Browne’s 20th anniversary and his just-launched capsule collection at Saks Fifth Avenue, the designer told the guests — who included Diane Keaton, Janelle Monáe, Logan Lerman and Danai Gurira — that the night felt like a homecoming.
“L.A. is almost my second home … I do feel like I had five really formative years here that I still hold dear to this day,” Browne explained during a toast at Mr. Chow restaurant in Beverly Hills Thursday night.
Years before he launched his label, the designer of now-iconic suits that have redefined suiting had trekked to Los Angeles while searching for a professional passion. The late interior designer Paul Fortune, whose clients included Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs, befriended Browne and later offered his guesthouse as a residence. It was there, adjacent to a pool under the California sunshine, that Browne began to contemplate his future.

Taking place amid the crush of parties surrounding the 2024 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, the Fifteen Percent Pledge Gala — with its black-tie Black designer dress code — drew one of the most gorgeously turned out crowds of the entire bash-filled weekend.
Held for the first time in L.A. and hosted by Robin Thede, the gala raised money for the nonprofit equity organization Fifteen Percent Pledge, founded by Brother Vellies designer Aurora James, which asks retailers to devote 15 percent of shelf space to products from Black-owned brands.
First Lady Jill Biden, wearing designer Sergio Hudson, made a surprise appearance at the event, held on the lot at Paramount Studios. She touted the achievements her husband’s administration has made to help small and minority-owned businesses (including doubling the amount of loans given by the government to small Black-owned companies) and praised James for founding the Fifteen Percent Pledge in the wake...

Donyale Luna: Supermodel director Nailah Jefferson with Anne-Katrin Titze on Beyoncé’s 2018 Vogue cover, shot by Tyler Mitchell: “It was the first Vogue cover that had ever been shot by a Black photographer.”
“My name is Luna, I come from the moon” is how Donyale Luna used to introduce herself. It looks as though the memory of the supermodel’s brief, brimful life had gone back up to the heavens with her for decades. Nailah Jefferson’s insightful and revealing documentary ameliorates this and celebrates an extraordinary woman’s journey. William Klein’s 1966 fashion film Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?, Federico Fellini’s Satyricon, a Vogue cover and one for Harper’s Bazaar, collaborations with Richard Avedon and David Bailey (interviewed here), images that show her with Salvador Dali and Groucho Marx, relationships with The Rolling Stone’s Brian Jones and Klaus Kinski, Andy Warhol bondings, and and and...

HBO has debuted the first trailer for Donyale Luna: Supermodel, a documentary exploring the life, career and legacy of one of the first Black models to grace the cover of a Vogue magazine.
Often considered the “first Black supermodel,” Luna — who died in 1979 at the age of 33 — broke ground at a time when it was not only still rare to see Black women who weren’t white-passing in fashion but Black women on major magazine covers at all. Through her heyday in the late ’60s and early ’70s, Luna challenged the modeling world’s conventions and made history by becoming the first Black woman on the covers of both Harper’s Bazaar in 1965 and British Vogue in 1966.
“She broke the mold of using Black models in the ’60s,” one talking head can be heard saying in the more than two-minute trailer.

Black History Month is observed from February 1 to March 1 and honors the game-changing contributions of Black leaders who have shaped our country. During this time (and throughout the year), it is also imperative to show your allyship by hiring and investing in Black creators, donating to organizations that fight to end racial inequality, supporting retailers who have pledged to make change, and — of course — shopping today’s many stylish Black-owned brands.

With five days until the debut of his Fall/Winter 2023 collection, how did Brandon Maxwell discover another gear, mentally and spiritually? By catching a performance of Lea Michele in Broadway’s Funny Girl. “I hadn’t been [to a Broadway show] in so many years like everyone else, so this was the return for me, and it was phenomenal,” Maxwell told The Hollywood Reporter following his runway presentation in a Midtown building.
Michele’s high-wattage turn as Fanny Brice indeed inspired Maxwell at just the right moment. “I left the show feeling like, wow, that’s commitment, and that’s something I’m really interested in right now,” he said.
Alongside Ashley Biden, Aurora James and Natalia Bryant, Michele was among the guests on the front row for Maxwell’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection, which represents the latest phase in what the designer terms his “slow, steady evolution.” That idea was evident from the first look out,...

On the first official day of New York Fashion Week, Rodarte already may have scored the season’s best front row, a powerhouse collection of women that included Brie Larson, Natasha Lyonne, Quinta Brunson, Beanie Feldstein, Aurora James, Rowan Blanchard and Molly Ringwald, accompanied by her 19-year-old daughter, Matilda. And for that starry group, Kate and Laura Mulleavy offered something for everyone in a show that blended elements of gothic romance, woodland fairies and ’60s-influenced styling in equal measure.
The Mulleavy sisters are often driven by art-inspired influences, and for their Fall/Winter 2023 collection, they turned to the source of that passion: their mother, Victoria, an artist whose maiden name, Rodart, spawned the brand’s appellation. “We asked our mother to create really beautiful fairies for a collection,” Laura told The Hollywood Reporter backstage after the show. “She decided to do one a day and did them all in colored pencil,...

As a model, Bethann Hardison walked the runway alongside Iman. As an agent, she discovered Tyson Beckford and mentored supermodels like Naomi Campbell. As an activist, Hardison revolutionized the fashion industry. From runway shows in the 1970s to roundtables about the lack of racial diversity in the early 2000s, the former model has seen the pendulum swing toward and away from the Black model.
In “Invisible Beauty,” a documentary directed by Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng, Hardison reflects on her personal journey, her fight for representational shifts in the fashion industry and the cost of being a pioneer. In addition to Hardison’s voice, the doc features interviews with her mentees and collaborators including Campbell, Beckford, Iman, Tracee Ellis Ross, Fran Lebowitz, Pat Cleveland, Stephen Burrows, Whoopi Goldberg, Ralph Lauren and Bruce Weber.
