2023 was a good year for villains. With social media discourse at an all-time low, public figures taking constant swipes at each other, and A.I. poised to render all news meaningless, it seems like the year was filled with nefarious people coming out of the woodwork to make our lives a little more stressful.
But no matter what nightmares we saw playing out in real life, we could rest in the knowledge that something equally evil or maybe even worse would be showing at our local cineplex or streaming platform. The horror genre is filled with larger-than-life foes from centuries-old monsters to futuristic killers and this year gave us villains in spades.
Some are humorous, some tragic, some pulled from reality, and some difficult to pin down. But regardless of their stories, the following ten villains made our lives just a little more terrifying – and if we don’t honor them here,...

A celebratory slasher that slices into the traditional fabric of Christmas-themed cinema, It's a Wonderful Knife invites viewers into Angel Falls, a seemingly idyllic haven where everything is "perfect" around the holidays... except for that masked killer running around town.
With It's a Wonderful Knife now streaming on Shudder, AMC+, and other VOD platforms, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with Jane Widdop, who plays Winnie Carruthers, a photographer transported to an alternate timeline one year after putting a stop to the Angel Falls killer... who is alive and unwell in this new twisted version of Angel Falls, forcing Winnie and local movie theater projectionist Bernie Simon (Jess McLeod) to team up to take down the Angel Falls murderer once more... and hopefully send Winnie back home to the previous (and slightly less blood-soaked) timeline.
In our new video interview below, Jane talks about the collaborative creative...

Freaky is one of my favorite horror movies released this decade, so when I heard that Freaky co-writer Michael Kennedy had written a new holiday horror film titled It's a Wonderful Knife (helmed by Tragedy Girls director Tyler MacIntyre), it immediately rose to the top of my must-see list, and the official trailer promises plenty of seasonal scares for horror fans to unwrap when the Christmas-themed slasher is released in theaters on November 10th.
Directed by Tyler MacIntyre and written and produced by Michael Kennedy, It's a Wonderful Knife stars Cassandra Naud, Justin Long, Joel McHale, and Jane Widdop.

Cassandra Naud is striking if a little opaque as a predator seducing image-obsessed tourists in Thailand
In this smartly arranged thriller by Kurtis David Harder, Canadian actor Cassandra Naud holds her own as a kind of social media Tom Ripley, out in Thailand preying on vacuous, smartphone-toting influencers while coveting their silky lifestyles. Broken down into four parts following different characters, the film dabbles in but doesn’t wholly conform to the now-standard satirical takedown of 21st-century popinjays. There’s something darker and more solipsistic at work here: Naud’s repeated spiel of “They won’t even notice you’re gone. Nobody cares” is just as rehearsed and trite as other airheaded Insta-platitudes.
Her character, CW, first gets her claws into Madison (Emily Tennant), a fellow American making nice for her feeds but actually moping around the Thai coast because she’s having a hard time with her British boyfriend...

Step into the twisted but beautiful reality of Influencer, where social media’s shiny veneer is peeled back to expose the dark secrets lurking beneath. Directed by Kurtis David Harder, with a wickedly clever script co-written with Tesh Guttikonda, this thrilling ride takes us from idyllic Thailand landscapes to the unnerving depths of an influencer’s world.
“[Influencer] constantly subverts expectations with a plot that darts in unforeseen directions. “
Madison (Emily Tennant), a popular social media influencer, seems to have it all as she flaunts her envy-inducing life on Instagram. However, her trip to Thailand turns out to be far from glamorous. That is until she crosses paths with CW (Cassandra Naud), an enigmatic traveler who offers her a taste of authenticity and companionship during a long-distance break-up. As they share local experiences and delve into the stark contrasts between Madison’s virtual existence and CW’s offline freedom, the story takes an unexpected turn.

The end of May traditionally also means that fall TV shows are gearing up to end their season finales. But that tradition hails from a time when TV seasons were nearly 30 episodes in length, and spanned from their premieres in early September all the way through late spring.
Streaming has changed essentially everything about that schedule. Although new TV shows are still traditionally released in the fall, streaming has no set calendar, and new titles release whenever studio executives see a lull in their calendar. Coincidentally, there are a couple of big-name streaming shows that will air their season (and series) finales this week, even though their premiere episodes aired not last September, but earlier this spring. Check them out below, along with all the other fantastic titles coming to streaming this week!
