Jon Stewart has waded into a row about the UK Labour Party blocking election candidate Faiza Shaheen from running for Parliament over her historical tweets relating to Israel.
Stewart shared a Twitter (now X) post from former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan, in which Hasan claimed that Shaheen had been “suspended” from Labour for liking a tweet that featured Stewart’s famous 2014 ‘We Need to Talk About Israel’ sketch.
“This is the dumbest thing The UK has done since electing Boris Johnson…what the actual fuck…” Stewart, who is Jewish, told his 1.7M followers.

The reality of the situation is a little more complicated than Hasan’s post suggested, however. Shaheen has not been disciplined for simply liking Stewart’s skit.

Roy Wood Jr. said on fellow comedian Mike Birbiglia’s “Working It Out” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that he was going to remain on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” as a correspondent for more time when the plan was for Hasan Minhaj to be named the permanent new host. Wood surprised fans by announcing his “Daily Show” exit last October, a decision he told Birbiglia came after the plan to have Minhaj host the show “fell apart” amid controversy over an interview Minhaj did with The New Yorker.
“That’s literally why everything fell apart,” Wood said about the interview, which revealed that Minhaj had embellished many “true stories” in his stand-up acts. “As far as I was told, Hasan was going to be the guy.”
Wood said he planned to stay with “The Daily Show” for “the rest of the year” under new host Minhaj and “we’ll...

MSNBC personality Mehdi Hasan has opted to leave the network, following the November cancellation of his Sunday-night series The Mehdi Hasan Show.
“As we begin 2024 with an election coming, a war still ongoing, and too many Trump trials honestly to even keep track of, and with this show going away, I’ve decided it’s time for me to look for a new challenge,” Hasan said during his final broadcast on Sunday. “Tonight is not just my final episode of The Mehdi Hasan Show. It’s my last day with MSNBC. Yes, I’ve decided to leave. To be clear,...

Warning: contains major plot spoilers for Netflix’s Bodies.
Of all the brow-furrowing questions surrounding the plot of Netflix’s ambitious time travel sci-fi Bodies, the role of a character who doesn’t even make it past episode one is still perplexing some fans.
In the 2023-set story, Syed Tahir (played by Sex Education and Accused actor Chaneil Kular) is the 17-year-old whom DS Hasan spots hiding in an alleyway at the Far Right march she’s been drafted in to help police in the opening episode. When Hasan sees that the teenager has a gun, she goes against orders and pursues him. She chases him all the way to Longharvest Lane, where she discovers a naked corpse who’s been shot dead. “This isn’t me,” he tells her, obviously terrified, and runs away.
The police later identify Syed, and Hasan convinces his sister Aaliyah (played by The Capture...

Kick now lets users block gambling and hot tub streams sitewide.
The platform–which has been working overtime to pitch itself as a viable alternative to Twitch–was co-founded by Stake.com co-founder Ed Craven, and since the beginning has made it clear that, unlike Twitch, it’s a haven for gambling streams.
But it seems to have realized rampantly promoting gambling might not be the best move. In a June 30 tweet, Craven said Kick has overall “removed some unnecessary exposure to gambling related content throughout our recommended formula’s [sic].” On July 3, Kick followed up by adding two toggles where users can choose to block all Slots & Casinos streams and/or all Pools, Hot Tubs & Bikinis streams.
Kick’s official account retweeted the toggle announcement, saying, “From tweet to feature within 48 hours, keep the ideas coming!”
It then later re-promoted the toggle in meme form, using HasanAbi holding a baby...

The prestigious Visions du Réel film festival in Nyon, Switzerland wraps up this weekend, after hosting the world premiere of dozens of documentaries.
One of those world premieres, the feature documentary Amany, Behind the Lines, centers on Amany Al-Ali, considered to be the first female cartoonist in Idlib, Syria. Her city became a hotbed of protest against the regime of Bashar al-Assad beginning in 2011 in the midst of the Arab Spring and, despite enormous risk, Al-Ali has used her cartooning skill to critique the chaotic developments in Idlib for a dozen years now.
Alisar Hasan and Alaa Amer directed the 73-minute long feature documentary.
Cartoonist Amany Al-Ali
Amany Al-Ali “draws the life of her town, a bastion of jihadist groups that are attempting to overthrow President Assad since 2011,” the Visions du Réel program notes. “Armed with her pen, she is struggling against Islamist authority and traditional patriarchy. But for how...

Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas has unfollowed comedian-actor Hasan Minhaj on social media. Minhaj had earlier mocked the Nobel Peace Prize winner and female education activist Malala Yousafzai for following him on Instagram. Recently, Hasan shared a video, of what looks like a promotion of his upcoming show, on his Instagram, as he wrote in the caption: “Okay, it’s gettin’ outta hand @malala!”
The video begins with the title ‘Malala claps back’ and features Hasan in the video as he says: “On October 4th, I made a joke about Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala. I said she follows me on Instagram and I don’t follow her back. Then on October 5th, she retaliated (asking who is this man?). Instead of doing a runoff, she unfollowed me on Instagram. I am sorry Malala, follow me back. I don’t know if I’ll follow you though. I am that petty.

Hasan Minhaj contains multitudes.
The comedian who hosted Netflix’s “Patriot Act” calls them “Instagram Hasan” and “iMessage Hasan.” In his new special, “The King’s Jester,” Minhaj describes getting swept up in the former, obsessed with virality and online clout at the cost of what really matters.
“There’s Twitter chatter, and there’s Irl chatter,” Minhaj told IndieWire via Zoom ahead of the “King’s Jester” premiere on Netflix. “And I think it’s important for us as performers, artists, and journalists to be able to discern between the two.”
He cites the Twitter headline of the day at the time — BuzzFeed’s Try Guys — and notes that this isn’t something affecting the day-to-day of most people in the country, including himself. A lot of what divides people is arbitrary; Minhaj believes in the power of comedy and shared experience to bring people together.
