This year’s Tonys will be held on June 16, so the American Theatre Wing will likely be announcing its lifetime achievement award recipient in the near future. Who do you think should take home this prestigious trophy? It has gone to veteran stage performers, directors, choreographers, playwrights, songwriters, producers and designers. In some years we get multiple recipients.
Last year these honors went to legendary actor Joel Grey and composer John Kander. The following living female Broadway vets have also received this award in the past and thus won’t be chosen again: Jane Greenwood, Rosemary Harris and Graciela Daniele. Here are 10 possible women the Tonys could award, all veterans over the age of 65. Vote to let us know who you’d like to see honored.

“It grabbed my heart and just shook it,” reveals Audra McDonald of Adrienne Kennedy’s searing play “Ohio State Murders.” The six-time Tony Award winner initially participated in a reading of the script over Zoom, one of many plays producer Jeffrey Richards organized during the pandemic to keep folks engaged while theater was shuttered. “When we finished, I couldn’t breathe. I was so stunned, and my soul was so shaken by what I had just read that I couldn’t let it go,” admits McDonald. The actress immediately agreed to star in the searing drama, eventually earning her 10th career Tony nomination. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Even though it just recently debuted on Broadway, “Ohio State Murders” was first performed over 30 years ago. Its central figure, Suzanne, never leaves the stage and endures a horrific, unceasing wave of racism, misogyny, and violence. “I know that if I...

With her most recent Tony Award nomination, for her role in Adrienne Kennedy’s Ohio State Murders, Audra McDonald reached yet another career milestone.
The six-time Tony Award winner already holds the record for most competitive wins by an actor but has now tied the record for most nominated individual performer, with 10 nominations. This puts her in the same category as Chita Rivera and Julie Harris.
McDonald, who is also the only person to win awards in all four Tony acting categories, says this nomination comes as an “incredible honor,” particularly because of the recognition it gives to Kennedy, a revered playwright who made her Broadway debut with the play at the age of 91.
In the play, which ran on Broadway from November through January, McDonald played writer Suzanne Alexander, who returns to Ohio State University to give a lecture on the violence in her writing. As she speaks, Alexander...

Bruce Norris’s Downstate and Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt were named this season’s Best Play and Best Foreign Play, respectively, by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle today.
Downstate opened last October in an Off Broadway production at Playwrights Horizons. Set at a downstate Illinois group home for men convicted of sex crimes, the play explored what the theater company called “the limits of compassion and forgiveness” when a man shows up at the home to confront his childhood abuser.
Leopoldstadt, inspired by Stoppard’s family history, chronicles a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna throughout the first half of the 20th Century. The well-reviewed play has been nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Play.
The Drama Critics’ Circle also announced the recipients of three Special Citations: The longstanding Off Off Broadway theater company La Mama; the Ohio State Murders playwright Adrienne Kennedy, who made her Broadway debut this...

Audra McDonald, who scored her 10th Tony nomination for performance in Ohio State Murders (Leading Actress/Play), said, “I am honored to have been nominated for Ohio State Murders. Having the opportunity to work with Kenny Leon, and to be a part of Adrienne Kennedy’s long-overdue Broadway debut of her extraordinary, relevant, and powerful work, was one of the most important artistic experiences of my life.”
“I am beyond excited to be nominated this year, and I’m deeply honored to be recognized for this role especially,” said Ben Platt, nominated in the Best Leading Actor/Musical category for his performance in Parade. “As a lifelong lover of musical theatre, this show has always had a special place in my heart.

The Drama League today announced the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards. Honoring achievements on and Off-Broadway, the nominations were announced this morning by Roger Bart (“Back to the Future: The Musical”) and Justin Guarini (“Once Upon A One More Time”) at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. Winners will be revealed at the 89th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 19, 2023.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

When surveying the outstanding crop of plays this Broadway season and attempting to make early guesses as to which ones will snag Tony nominations, I can only sum it up as “absolutely insane.” Luckily, trusted Gold Derby contributor David Buchanan joins me in a new video slugfest to hash out all the possibilities.

Tony Awards voters will not have to see every nominated performer or show to vote in that category this season, according to a new rule from the Tony Award Administration Committee.
The rule change, put in place for the 2022-2023 season only, will allow a voter to still vote in a category if they have missed one nominated show, one performance by a nominated actor or actress and one creative element (i.e. lighting or scenic design) per category.
This would mean that a voter could, for example, still vote for best play or best musical even if they had not seen one of the nominated productions and to vote in the best actor and best actress categories without having seen one of the performers.
The Tony Awards did not give a reason for the why this change was made for this season, but cited situations in which there were...

The Tony Awards Administration Committee has announced its first round of eligibility rulings for this Broadway season, determining some of the trickier potential nominees and their respective categories.
Both co-stars of The Collaboration – Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope – will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, rather than split up into leading and featured slots. Ohio State Murders, written by Adrienne Kennedy in 1991 and performed regionally but never on Broadway until this season, will be considered a revival in keeping with similar rulings in recent years about Broadway debuts of older shows such as The Boys in The Band.
Perhaps among the more surprising rulings is for Sharon D Clarke, who played Linda Loman opposite Wendell Pierce’s Willy Loman in Miranda Cromwell’s Death of a Salesman revival. Clarke will be eligible as a Featured Actress rather than Leading.

Ohio State Murders, the Broadway debut of 91-year-old playwright Adrienne Kennedy starring Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, is ending its Broadway run in January.
Producers said Thursday that Jan. 15 will be the Kenny Leon-directed play’s final performance at the James Earl Jones Theatre. The show was the first to be staged in the newly renamed theater on W. 48th St. The show officially opened Dec. 8 following previews, which began Nov. 11, and was originally scheduled to close Feb. 12.
McDonald portrays writer Suzanne Alexander, who has returned to her alma mater to appear as a guest speaker discussing the violence in her work. But with her arrival, a dark mystery unravels, as Alexander grapples with the racial violence she experienced as an undergraduate in this suspense play that examines the destructiveness of racism in our society.

Update, with new Collaboration closing date: Ohio State Murders, the play starring Audra McDonald that made history by being the first Broadway production of acclaimed 91-year-old playwright Adrienne Kennedy, will play its final performance on Sunday, January 15.
Though generally well-reviewed, Ohio State Murders has struggled at the box office, grossing just 311,893 for nine-performances during Broadway’s generally lucrative New Year’s week. Attendance for the week, which ended Jan. 1, was only 49 of capacity at the recently renamed James Earl Jones Theatre.
Directed by Kenny Leon, Ohio State Murders starred McDonald as a writer and lecturer coming to terms with a horrific incident from her past: the murders of her two infant daughters. The production also featured Bryce Pinkham, Lizan Mitchell, Mister Fitzgerald, and Abigail Stephenson, with understudies Brett Diggs, Brooke Gardner, Christian Pedersen and Gayle Samuels.

Fans of the extraordinary Audra McDonald have had a long wait for her return to the Broadway stage. Yes, she did host the 2021 Tony Awards that were previously postponed by the pandemic, and yes, she has been starring in “The Good Fight” with countless theatre alums, but nothing compares to seeing McDonald live. After three and a half years, the actress now leads the first production of an Adrienne Kennedy play on Broadway: “Ohio State Murders” opened at the newly-minted James Earl Jones Theatre on Dec. 8.
In “Ohio State Murders,” McDonald plays Suzanne Alexander, a writer who returns to her former college to deliver a lecture on her work. Through her narration, she reveals the racism she experienced as a young student, her relationship with a professor (played by Tony Award nominee Bryce Pinkham), and the murders of the play’s title that continue to haunt her and her writing.

Many decades after her brilliant and unsettling plays became seen Off Broadway, at regional theaters or, sometimes, not at all, the great playwright Adrienne Kennedy is making her Broadway debut tonight when her 1992 work Ohio State Murders opens as the inaugural production at the newly renamed James Earl Jones Theatre.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, the acclaimed 91-year-old Kennedy was blunt about why Broadway took so long: “It’s because I’m a Black woman,” she said, and one need look no further than Broadway’s other criminally late embrace – of Alice Childress and her wonderful 1955 play Trouble In Mind, which finally received an exceptional Broadway staging last year – to recognize the truth of the statement.
So the decision to bring Adrienne Kennedy to Broadway – or, perhaps more accurately, to bring Broadway to Adrienne Kennedy – is worthy of praise before so much as a single syllable is uttered on stage.

Attention must be paid to the latest revival of Arthur Miller’s classic American family drama “Death of a Salesman,” which opened on Broadway at the Hudson Theatre on Oct. 9. Wendell Pierce takes on the formidable role of the salesman Willy Loman, and last-year’s Tony nominee Sharon D Clarke joins him as Willy’s wife Linda. Unlike any prior production of the show on Broadway, this Loman family is portrayed by Black actors.
Director Miranda Cromwell helms this “Salesman,” which originated in the UK. That production was co-directed by Marianne Elliott — who just won a Tony this year for her revival of “Company” — and earned five Olivier Award nominations in 2020, winning for director and actress for Clarke. Stateside, the Loman family is rounded out by André De Shields as Willy’s brother Ben, and Khris Davis and McKinley Belcher III as Willy’s sons Biff and Happy.

Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris will donate a collection of 15 plays by Black playwrights to 53 libraries and community centers across the country, a donation made in lieu of sending Slave Play scripts to Tony Award voters.
O. Harris made the announcement last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers, telling the NBC talk show host that a donation of The Golden Collection has been made in Meyers’ name to his alma mater Northwestern University. The playwright said the donation was made to recognize Meyers’ early and continued support of Slave Play.
The Golden Collection, named for Harris’ grandfather Golden Harris who died two weeks before the playwright learned that Slave Play had been booked at Broadway’s Golden Theatre, was launched in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign. The plays selected for the collection include Les Blancs by Lorraine Hansberry, The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe, An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs Jenkins,...

We meet Kay (Juliana Canfield), a young woman based on Kennedy’s own mother, and Chris (Tom Pecinka), the white son of the town’s local bigwig (and benefactor of its school for “coloreds” where Kay is a student). As in most of Kennedy’s work, naturalism is eschewed in favor of a more roundabout form of exposition that relies...
