When comics author James Tynion IV’s comic miniseries The Nice House on the Lake first hit stores, it was 2021 and the coronavirus pandemic was in full force. Isolation and alienation were felt by many, as was the fear of a world burning just outside their door.
That was one reason the comic became one of the biggest titles for DC of the past several years, outselling even much of its superhero fare. The story focused on 10 people connected by a slightly odd friend named Walter, who invited them to a house in the woods — and who turned out to be phantasmagoric alien.
Now, Tynion is returning to that world with a sequel titled The Nice House by the Sea. Once again, he is teaming with artist Álvaro Martínez Bueno. And while he hopes to scare many readers with this miniseries, he is focused on an audience of one.

The company’s Arune Singh has been promoted to vp, brand, editorial.
The moves come after a banner year for Skybound’s publishing division and reflect a deeper commitment to the comic art form. Last year, the company launched what it called the Energon Universe, an umbrella for licensed G.I. Joe and Transformers comics, which have proven to hits with readers and critics. James Tynion IV, the bestselling author behind comic books like Something is Killing the Children and The Department of Truth, on Friday announced the launch of Tiny Onion, an independent multimedia production company that will be active across the publishing, film, television, and animation industries.
In a statement on Tiny Onion’s unveiling, Tynion said: “Over the last twelve years, I’ve watched the comics industry from the inside, working alongside its best talent and biggest publishers, seeing the exciting ways that it can connect to other media spaces, and I’ve managed to work my way to some prominence. Now I have the chance to take everything I’ve learned and test out every way to make it work even better. Not just for me, but for the generation of creators coming up behind me.”
Backed by a seed investment from production company Lyrical Media, Tiny Onion will manage much of Tynion’s IP and is in the process of developing a number of properties for the screen. Amongst them is The Department of Truth, which Tynion will team on with Sister, serving as executive producer. UTA, which reps both Tynion and Lyrical Media, will now represent Tiny Onion in media rights, where it will help the production company grow its producing profile across film and television.
In the comics space, the company is currently staffing up a full-service independent editorial and design team, which will seek to identify creative partners and elevate them, curating and packaging the titles before bringing them to the company’s publishing partners across the industry. Tiny Onion will not operate as a publisher itself, but rather an independent creative services company with a footprint across many publishers, including Boom! Studios, Dark Horse Comics, Dstlry, and Image Comics. Already introduced as part of the editorial team are Eric Harburn (formerly of Boom! Studios), Courtney Menard (formerly of Z2 Comics), who will serve as Director of Production, and Jazzlyn Stone, who will serve as Director of Communications.
The winner of five Eisner Awards, Tynion is best known for his work on the Batman franchise at DC Comics, his DC Black Label series The Nice House on the Lake, and his independent series The Department of Truth, Something is Killing the Children, and Wynd. He has also written for DC’s Detective Comics and Justice League Dark, as well as the New York Times bestselling Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover series.

Netflix may not have a big superhero franchise, but they are absolutely in the comic book adaptation business. To that end, the streaming service is currently developing a TV show based on the best-selling Boom! Studios comic "Something Is Killing The Children." The series, which comes from writer James Tynion IV ("Batman") and artist Werther Dell'Edera ("Punisher War Journal") has been met with widespread acclaim, as well as massive sales numbers rarely seen outside of Marvel and DC Comics. That being the case, it's the perfect title to become a big streaming series.
The book was originally published in 2019 and was nominated for an Eisner, ultimately paving the way for the series to become an ongoing title, rather than the five-issue miniseries it was originally intended as. Boom! has also since published a spin-off titled "House of Slaughter," which also saw huge sales upon release. That being the case, there...

Something Is Killing the Children, the popular comic by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’edera published by Boom! Studios, is getting another shot at an adaptation from Netflix.
Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the German creators of buzzy cult series Dark and 1899, have been tapped to develop a series adaptation of the comic, one of the biggest titles being published outside DC and Marvel.
The project is the first to come out the duo’s freshly-renewed first look deal with the streaming giant. That deal is a multi-year overall deal that is said to be in the eight figures.
Bo Odar and Friese will write, showrun and executive produce should the project get the greenlight. They will also direct the pilot. Boom!’s Stephen Christy and Ross Richie will executive produce the adaptation. Tynion and Dell’Edera will co-executive produce.

“Dark” creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are at the helm of the “Something Is Killing the Children” small screen adaptation from Netflix and Boom! Studios.
“The series alights on a small town plagued by monsters that eat children and reveals a mysterious young woman who has the special powers to combat the creatures.”
“When the children of Archer’s Peak begin to go missing, everything seems hopeless. Most children never return, but the ones that do have terrible stories—impossible stories of terrifying creatures that live in the shadows. About a year ago, comic book author James Tynion IV was on a long drive back to New York City from a friend’s engagement upstate when he got an email from French artist Elsa Charretier asking him if he’d be interested in writing the script for a short film she and longtime partner Pierrick Colinet were making.
The reaction from Tynion, the best-selling creator who has several comics on the go such as Something Is Killing the Children and Department of Truth as well as a Substack comic newsletter, was an almost immediate no. “I’m working on a million things, I don’t have time for this,” Tynion thought.
“By the time I got back to the city, I got an idea in my head, and I was like, ‘Yes, I want to do this,’” Tynion recalled in a Zoom conversation with The Hollywood Reporter.

It was announced last summer that Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy would be co-writing a pilot for a potential Netflix series adaptation of James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera’s comic book series Something Is Killing the Children, but it looks like those plans have changed. In a new chat with The Wrap this week, Flanagan confirms the project is no more.
“With that one, we were a good ways through our process, but Netflix decided to kind of go in a different direction with that property,” Flanagan tells The Wrap. “So we’re not involved anymore. We love James [Tynion IV], we love the source material, and we wish the absolute best for whoever ends up with it, but that one we’re not gonna move forward with.”
“It’s a bummer,” Flanagan adds.

There’s one less Netflix series on Mike Flanagan’s plate.
The “Haunting of Hill House” creator tells TheWrap that he and Intrepid Pictures are no longer involved with the comic book adaptation “Something Is Killing the Children.”

Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy were set to be co-writing and executive producing an adaptation of James Tynion IV’s comic in 2021. The comic book series launched in 2019 to immense success, and tells the story of a town in which monsters feast on children.

These conjurors of the profane will unleash new tales featuring Bigfoot, Philip K. Dick android,...

Point Grey and Boom! Studios continue developing a big screen adaptation of the 3-issue apocalyptic horror comic book series "Memetic" (2014), created by writer James Tynion IV and illustrator Eryk Donovan, to be scripted by Mattson Tomlin ("The Batman"):
"...at 7:04 am on 'Day One', an image of a 'Good Time Sloth' against a spiral background appears on the Internet and instantly becomes a viral sensation 'meme'.
"Viewers of the image claim that seeing the image it makes them feel amazing and tingle with happiness, and they have difficulty looking away.
"Meanwhile, 'Marcus Shaw', a blind war veteran, becomes troubled by the sloth image when his friend 'Richie' becomes obsessed with it. He contacts 'Barbara Xiang', an old friend and the author of an essay about 'weaponized memetics', who isn't sure what to think of the situation, but notices that those who view the image feel compelled to spread it to others.

Everyone who was invited to the house knows Walter well, they know him a little, anyway. Some met him in childhood; some met him months ago. And Walter s always been a little off. But after the hardest year of their lives, nobody was going to turn down Walter s invitation to an astonishingly beautiful house in the woods, overlooking an enormous sylvan lake. It s beautiful, it s opulent, it s private so a week of putting up with Walter s weird little schemes and nicknames in exchange for the vacation of a lifetime? Why not? All of them were at that moment in their lives when they could feel themselves pulling away from their other friends; wouldn t a chance to reconnect be nice? In The Nice House on the Lake,...

This article contains spoilers for Batman #118.
There’s no bigger single title in the DC Comics library right now than the core Batman book. Consistently the book where the future of the Dark Knight is made each month, it’s also been the DC title with perhaps the longest unbroken run of the highest-possible-octane creative teams in superhero comics over the last 15 years. Since 2006, Batman has been written by Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Tom King, and James Tynion IV, each bringing their own flavor to the book over extended, sprawling runs.
The latest writer to hit the bat-jackpot is Joshua Williamson, who has had a string of creative successes of his own over the last few years, but who is perhaps best known for an unbroken five year run on The Flash, where he renewed and restored countless elements of not just Barry Allen’s history, but the entire Flash legacy.

This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.
Young Justice Season 4 Episode 6
It doesn’t take a lot to bring me back in, and Young Justice: Phantoms found the sweet spot this week with “Artemis Through the Looking Glass.” It turns out all they needed to do was toss me a couple of crumbs of Cassandra Cain content and everything would be better.
It helps that this week was actually animated. The story still feels rushed, but the kinetic energy of the show is back to its normal level. A huge chunk of the episode is dedicated to a fight between Black Spider (Young Justice’s Spectacular Spider-Man knockoff) and Rictus from the League of Shadows, and Tigress, Onyx, Scandal Savage, Orphan, and Cheshire on the other side. Tigress had brought in Cheshire last week to help her figure out which of Onyx and Scandal was a potential mole, and they...

Between booze and cigarettes, says Mike Flanagan, he’s shed a lot of addictions by this point in his life, but work isn’t one of them. “I cannot eliminate work,” the writer-director tells Den of Geek and other press over Zoom. “That is the addiction I haven’t escaped and it’s running amok in the absence of all the others.”
He’s not kidding. In the last five years, Flanagan has directed, written or co-written and edited five feature films as well as directing, co-writing and executive-producing three Netflix series with producer Trevor Macy. Oh, and they’ve already wrapped filming on Netflix series number four, The Midnight Club, and at the time of writing, are currently prepping to fly back to Vancouver to start filming on Netflix series number five. That will be Something is Killing the Children, an adaptation of James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera...
