At Hunter College in Manhattan, she became active in the movement against the Vietnam War. She worked with student groups to establish Asian-American studies at Hunter and other colleges in the City University of New York system. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan with a degree in illustration.
Until age 9, she lived in the back room of her parents' hand laundry in Queens, New York, with her parents and three younger siblings.
