The Current Debate is a column that connects the dots between great writing about a topic in the wider film conversation.Civil War.Every now and then there comes a film so in tune with our pestilential zeitgeist as to earn that most dangerous of descriptors: important. I can’t think of many words more vacuous, not only because of all the questions it leaves unanswered, but also because of the argument it peddles: that a film’s ability to sponge the mood of our times should count as an artistic merit. A film is important because it deals with important topics, or so the logic goes; it is necessary because these are things we all should care about, lessons we ought to treasure, and warnings we must heed. In this Neanderthal worldview, art is reduced to propaganda, and audiences to crowds who must be educated and pandered to. But...

EW has shared two new official promo stills for Alien: Romulus as part of their summer preview, and one of 'em pays homage to a scene from Aliens.
In James Cameron's follow-up to Ridley Scott's '70s classic, Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn) shows Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) how to use a pulse rifle before the crew land in some real pretty sh*t with the attacking Xenomorphs, and the moment is recreated here with Archie Renaux's Tyler and Cailee Spaeny's Rain Carradine.
The second image gives us another look at a Xenomorph about to give an unfortunate crew member a very bad day.
While the previous movies focused on blue-collar colleagues, soldiers, and prisoners, director Fede Alvarez explains how Romulus will take a different approach by introducing a group of characters who have become as close as family.

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th (you can watch the teaser Here), and we have previously seen a picture of a Xenomorph from the film – in fact, that’s the image featured above this paragraph. Now USA Today has shared another image of an Alien: Romulus Xenomorph, and you can check that one out at the bottom of this article. It has been said that Álvarez was dedicated to using practical effects on this film (we’ve even seen him playing with a remote controlled Facehugger), so it’s nice to see glimpses of these creatures that actually existed on the set.

Alex Garland’s brand new box office hit Civil War continues its successful theatrical run with more and more viewers attracted by everyone else’s raving reviews and the movie’s gut-wrenching plot.
A dystopian drama, Civil War offers a vast landscape of the post-apocalyptic United States engulfed by mass protests across the country, but the film’s most thrilling scene has no sign of the catastrophic war at all — quite literally.
Civil War initially follows a group of journalists led by Kirsten Dunst’s character who have to make their way safe and sound from New York to Washington D.C., the very heart of flaring rebellions.
During their trip the group makes a stop in a small American town where literally everybody consciously ignores the ongoing war and its repercussions. What’s the most terrifying here is that people there are pretty much aware of what their country...

True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

Tense, disturbing, riveting, Alex Garland’s dystopian film Civil War examines an existential threat preying on the American sub-conscious: What would happen if the political and social divisions cleaving the United States ultimately collapse the nation into the abyss? What if the wars of rhetoric, of culture, of values, cause a series of irreparable breaks, whole states secede and we descend into an actual war?
These are menacing questions made palpable because many of us feel we’re already at the brink. As we swirl in a civil war of ideas, a civil war of ideologies, a civil war in public discourse and policy that has created two completely different frames of reality, more than 40 percent of Americans polled just two years ago by YouGov and The Economist said they believe the nation could turn so far on itself that a civil war, a military conflict, is possible within this decade.

Authenticity holds a lot of value in Hollywood. As much as audiences love to watch remakes, retellings, and sequels, nothing catches their attention more than something original and magnificent. The one studio that is best known for only creating content like this is A24. The perfect example of such a story would be their recently released movie, Civil War.
Image via Civil War Trailer – A24 | YouTube
In the classic style of the studio, the movie features an A-list cast of actors like Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny, and Wagner Moura, but has still managed to remain, somewhat, under the radar. With its recent release, the movie has gotten nothing short of splendid reviews from audiences and critics alike, hinting at a successful future at the box office.

“Civil War” writer-director Alex Garland gave a lengthy interview to Vulture in which he was asked to weigh in on accusations against his film that claim it’s irresponsible to open it in theaters amid such a turbulent election year. Garland’s film is set in an America at war with itself (Texas and California have seceded to become the Western Forces) and follows a group of journalists attempting to interview the U.S. president.

Director Alex Garland and cinematographer Rob Hardy have worked together to make worlds that all feel like they could beat you up, whether they’re vast and weird (“Annihilation“), contained and sharp (“Ex Machina“), or geometric and severe (“Devs”). The pair’s collaborations have a consideration of space and power with an almost magnetic pull. The firepower of their latest film, “Civil War,” is quite literal. The camera’s job is to watch the journalist characters embedded in a military assault on Washington, D.C., witness the Lincoln Monument get blown up.
In this, “Civil War” joins a robust tradition of war films stretching back as far as 1925’s “The Big Parade” and 1926’s “What Price Glory?” that try to convey the power of violence itself: its horror, its allure, its twisted humor, and most of all its undeniable pull towards more violence. Kirsten Dunst’s Civil War featured her husband Jesse Plemons in one of the most disturbing scenes in the film. Fans were terrified yet impressed by Plemons’ chilling performance, but director Alex Garland shared that the scene was meant for another actor. When the original actor became unavailable a few days before the shoot, it was Dunst who suggested Plemons for the role. Garland felt incredibly lucky to have the Breaking Bad actor on board the film.

In notching A24’s highest-grossing opening weekend to date, Alex Garland’s debate-stirring combat film Civil War has made plenty of noise — both figuratively and literally.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny and Wagner Moura, the project has spurred conversation over its depiction of a small group of journalists witnessing the violently divided U.S. en route to collecting $25.7 million at the domestic box office this weekend. Among the buzziest elements of the film has been its sound design, as Civil War’s use of jarring battle noise, along with the impactful contrast between its onslaught of gunfire and moments of dead silence. It all adds to the chaos and tension.
Civil War supervising sound editor Glenn Freemantle, an Oscar winner for 2013’s Gravity, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he and frequent collaborator Garland were in lockstep in how to best create the film’s dystopian world.

“Civil War” production designer Caty Maxey was tasked with building a dystopian America that showed bombed-out buildings and abandoned cars that stretched for miles on the freeway. It was all part of her creative brief for Alex Garland’s latest film.
Garland drops audiences into the middle of “Civil War.” America is no longer united and there are warring factions. At the center of it all are four journalists who travel from New York to Washington, D.C., where the Western Forces of Texas and California are battling the Federal Government. Kirsten Dunst plays Lee, a photojournalist. She is joined by colleagues Joel (Wagner Moura), Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson). ‘Civil War’ director Alex Garland thinks the movie's critics are "missing the point".The 53-year-old filmmaker's dystopian flick follows journalists - played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny - travelling across the United States as a Second Civil War rages in the country, which is being ruled over by a totalitarian president (Nick Offerman), and it has faced a backlash for being apolitial, but Alex just felt he didn't need to overtly "state" the ideals of the film within the plot. Speaking to Inverse, he said: “People keep saying the film is not political. I think they’re just missing the point.“It’s just not stating politics in the way they want it to be stated. I thought, it's actually not necessary because audiences ideally would make their own interpretation, ‘What threatens us? What is there around right now that might lead us to this place?’ And I leave that to them.

Civil War is an extremely powerful, effective movie that thrusts you into the middle of an American civil war seen through the eyes of a war photographer. It’s brutal. It’s extraordinarily violent. The sound design is bordering on abusive. And if you watch it in IMAX you can reasonably expect to leave the theater with more than a little motion sickness. It is, however, excellent, with great performances from Kirsten Dunst as the older, jaded photographer and Cailee Spaeny as the reckless youngster new to the game. So see it. But we’d be very surprised if you decide to rush back for a second viewing.

While there were concerns it could be a divisive topic, Alex Garland's explosive, nervy Civil War is so far proving to be a big hit in Stateside cinemas, and the writer/director's latest has opened way ahead of expectations. Per Variety, the film, which had been predicted to fall somewhere in the $15-$20 million range, is now on course to earn more than $25 million for its first weekend.
The film, which stars Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Maura, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, is enjoying healthy business on regular screens and IMAX, and is already both Garland and distributor A24's most successful film to date. And it needed to be, since it has the biggest budget of a movie by the company, which also spent a considerable amount marketing.

From the vastly untapped and underrated vision of Alex Garland comes yet another Oscar-winning project. Civil War stands out as an exceptionally well-drawn-out feature that presents itself as a thesis on the modern world, its ghastly conflicts, and the ultimate breakdown of social order. But through the mind-bending craft of actors like Jesse Plemons, the conflict finds a mouthpiece. Plemons not only acts his part but embodies the evil that permeates throughout the storyline.

Actress Kirsten Dunst headlines Alex Garland’s political thriller Civil War. The film sees Dunst play the role of a photojournalist during a second Civil War in America which prompts Texas and California to secede from the USA and try to overthrow the government. The film also stars Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Apart from the main cast, the film also features Jesse Plemons as a white nationalist militiaman. Plemons reportedly appears in one scene in the film, which was reportedly extremely uncomfortable for the cast and crew. It was reportedly more so for Dunst as she is married to Plemons.

The box office is united behind “Civil War.” A24’s dystopian thriller earned $10.7 million from 3,838 locations across its opening day and preview screenings, putting itself on track for a debut of around $26 million.
The debut figure represents the highest opening day gross ever for A24, besting the $5.1 million earned by 2018’s “Hereditary” in its first screenings. That horror feature still holds the record for the indie banner’s highest opening weekend ever, with a $13.5 million tally — a watermark that “Civil War” should be able to surge above before the end of Saturday. “Civil War” also gets a boost in sales from playing in premium-large format auditoriums like Imax.
It’s a record that the Alex Garland-directed war feature needs to break since it’s also the most expensive feature in the history of A24. “Civil War” cost $50 million to produce, plus additional costs for marketing and distribution. It’s...

We’re all still far off from knowing for sure what the most likely 2025 Oscar contenders are. But the ripple effect of the WGA and SAG strikes is a spring film season of buzzy, auteur-driven dramas. This is still true of “Dune: Part Two,” the film that has set the tone of this year’s awards conversation, though with six Oscars already under the Warner Bros. franchise’s belt, its chances at more Academy Awards nominations are all too predictable.
An Oscars wild card is “Civil War,” the latest A24 film from writer-director Alex Garland. While his most recent film with the company, “Men,” underperformed critically and commercially, his first collaboration with A24, “Ex Machina,” netted Garland his sole Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The United States is tearing itself apart in a maelstrom of sectarian divisions. Armed groups freely patrol vast swaths of so-called “sovereign” territory. The constant threat of violence hangs over the country, and states are openly rebelling against the powers of the federal government. The world’s oldest continuous modern democracy seems poised on the brink of melting down.
And, oh yeah, a new movie is coming out: Alex Garland’s Civil War.
While the above scenario is a slightly exaggerated version of what’s actually happening in the U.S. today—and, it seems, for the past eight years—one can squint a little and imagine that it’s not really that far off from the truth. The nation is more polarized than ever before, trust in the government, along with institutions like the press and the Supreme Court, is at an all-time low, and everyday Americans are viewing...

Plot: In the United States, amid a brutal civil war, a team of journalists drive from New York to Washington D.C, where they’ve been promised an interview with the president.
Review: A24 is the only movie studio I know of that’s picked up a cult following of its own. Their brand has become one of the most trusted among discerning film fans, delivering a slew of interesting, provocative movies that fit all genres. In some ways, they are a throwback to an older kind of filmmaking in that they’ve never focused on chasing franchises and have always been filmmaker-focused. They’ve always taken risks, and it’s paid off more than it hasn’t. However, their latest film, Civil War, is arguably their riskiest movie, sporting their biggest budget (north of $50 million) and subject matter that could be seen as a bit of a political powder keg.

When Stephen McKinley Henderson appears on screen, you always know you’re in good hands. The presence of the beloved character actor all but guarantees that he’s going to pass on some eye-opening wisdom and make you feel something, which explains why his two-time co-star Cailee Spaeny considers him the Yoda-like figure in her life. The two Missouri natives previously worked together on Alex Garland’s gem of a sci-fi miniseries, Devs, and now they’ve reunited on the big screen in the English filmmaker’s critically acclaimed anti-war thriller, Civil War.
Civil War, which is Henderson’s fifth A24 collaboration, begins in the near future, as secessionists are on the verge of seizing the White House from its dictatorial, third-term president (Nick Offerman). In this futurist-dystopian action thriller, Garland stages a spectacular, yet strangely politically ambiguous, portrayal of civil unrest, where the true causes of the war remain shrouded in mystery
The film follows a group of intrepid war photographers, led by Lee (Kirsten Dunst), as they navigate a world destroyed by the folly of a nation engulfed in its self-destruction. Their mission is to capture the harrowing realities of war and, hopefully, the downfall of the Commander-in-chief.
The ensemble cast deliver strong performances, with Dunst commanding the screen as the seasoned veteran Lee, her expression a mix of Ptsd and despair in the face of unspeakable horrors. Narcos alum Wagner Moura shines as Joel, the fearless reporter whose mission...

Alex Garland’s dystopian action movie Civil War has started off its North American box office run with an impressive $2.9 million, a record for indie studio and distributor A24.
The $50 million movie about a divided America is a big swing for A24 as it tries to produce bigger movies, and is its most expensive production to date.
Civil War is tracking to open north of $20 million, although one leading tracking service has a slightly lower range of $19 million to $20 million. As with the preview number, that would be record for A24, beating the $13.6 million opening of A24’s horror pic Hereditary in 2018.
A24 and writer-director Garland held the movie’s world premiere last month at the South by Southwest Film and TV Festival, an ideal venue since many of the attendees are younger adults, the film’s target demo.

This article contains major Civil War spoilers.
It’s the smiles that ultimately get to me. The entire, deafening finale of Civil War is meant to disturb as secessionist soldiers storm the nation’s capital, obliterating enemy combatants and U.S. landmarks in the same breath. Their foes, the few remaining armed forces loyal to a failed American dictator, are hardly meant to be sympathetic. And yet, it’s impossible to not shudder at the sight of the Lincoln Memorial reduced to rubble or unarmed bureaucrats being executed on the carpeted floors of the West Wing.
The whole sequence crescendos into the inevitable. We see what happens when a strongman’s strength crumbles. The unnamed President of the United States (Nick Offerman), who we’re teased dropped missiles on American citizens and executed journalists across the District of Columbia, is dragged from beneath the Resolute Desk pleading for his life.

The box office is going to war.
A24 and director Alex Garland’s latest film, the controversial “Civil War,” is opening in theaters this weekend. So far, it’s made $2.9 million at the box office in Thursday previews.
“Civil War” has its sights set on the highest opening weekend ever for an A24 movie. The film, which takes place in a fractured America torn apart by civil war, is projected to make around $20 million in its opening weekend. Some estimates are as high as $24 million and as low as $15 million, but even that would break the A24 record. An opening in the upper range could also unseat Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire,” which has been No. 1 for the past two weeks at the box office.
Director Ari Aster’s horror film “Hereditary” currently holds the highest opening weekend for A24, after it made $13.6 million in 2018. “Hereditary” made $1.3 million in Thursday previews,...
