He was a prominent fisherman, newspaper columnist, and author of 32 books on the outdoors. His "life list" of fish caught included 126 species. He fished on every continent except Antarctica. He designed a fly, dubbed "Lefty's Deceiver," that was so revolutionary, it was pictured on a US first-class stamp in 1991.
