Newark battle rapper Tsu Surf was sentenced to a mandatory five years in prison after previously pleading guilty to Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (Rico) conspiracy charges.
The rapper, born Rahjon Cox, faced up to 30 years in prison as part of charges connected to his membership in the Rollin’ 60s Neighborhood Crips street gang.
However, by pleading guilty to conspiracy and to possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon — and thus avoiding a trial and potentially harsher sentence — a U.S. district judge sentenced Cox to five years in federal prison,...

Coi Leray’s album Trendsetter marks the culmination of a nearly four-year journey that began with the RIAA-certified success of 2018’s “Huddy” and continued with 2021’s “No More Parties.” It also included a handful of minor dustups: video of her at last year’s Rolling Loud Miami drew social media mockery for her concert audience’s nonplussed reaction; and, more worryingly, a war of words erupted with her estranged father, rapper and onetime Eminem combatant turned reality-tv star Benzino. Ironically, the tumult elevated Coi Leray’s profile, helping her emerge...

It was a busy week on the latest Rs 200, with three new albums debuting in the Top Ten, and a Beatles’ oldie earning an impressive total of more than 81,000 album-equivalent units.
DaBaby led the chart with Kirk, which enjoyed more than 170 million streams. That shot the Interscope rapper past Post Malone, whose Hollywood’s Bleeding continues to stream well week after its initial release. Hollywood’s Bleeding earned over 100,000 album equivalent units for the fourth consecutive week.
The Beatles slid in at Number Three on the Rs 200 thanks to a reissue of Abbey Road.

If the future is female, then streaming services are wildly behind the times — the big winners on these platforms are overwhelmingly men. In 2018, for example, just three of the Top 25 most-streamed songs were helmed by women, according to data from BuzzAngle, which tracks music consumption. The same held true for albums.
That means streaming services don’t have much to offer female rappers right now. Two weeks ago, just two of the 50 songs on Spotify’s popular RapCaviar playlist incorporated women: Both involved Cardi B. Apple Music’s comparable playlist,...

"Your rap career is not over! ... Tonight, the after party to end all after parties." Netflix has launched a trailer for an indie comedy titled The After Party, a film about an up-and-coming rapper who almost ruins his career when he pukes on Wiz Khalifa. His friend convinces him to take him to an after party where he'll have another shot at making it big if he can perform and impress the attendees. The story takes place during "one wild night", of course. The cast includes Kyle Harvey, Harrison Holzer, Shelley Hennig, Teyana Taylor, Jordan Rock, Amin Joseph, Andy Buckley, and Blair Underwood; featuring cameos by Wiz Khalifa, French Montana, DJ Khaled, Ski Mask the Slump God, Desiigner, Pusha T, Jadakiss, Tee Grizzley, Young M.A., and more. This looks funky and entertaining, but nothing that will make a real mark in the end. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Ian Edelman's The After Party,...
