It's a good thing that "Sicario" is often cited as the best Denis Villeneuve movies, seeing as the director, cast, and crew apparently risked their lives to make it. Imagine putting yourself through life-threatening situations just to witness the poor reviews roll in and the almighty Tomatometer bestow an abject splat upon your film. Thankfully, "Sicario" currently stands at a muscular 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the third highest-rated of Villeneuve's films on the website, behind "Arrival" and "Dune: Part Two."
But without "Sicario," those other two blockbusters arguably wouldn't exist. This was the movie that established Villeneuve as a director capable of balancing human drama with large-scale action and set him on a course to shepherd the big-budget movies he's now known for. As "Dune: Part Two" crosses box office milestone after box office milestone, "Sicario" still stands as the movie that made it all possible.

The eleventh episode of The Irrational finally focused solely on the church bombing case that had haunted Mercer since the first episode. After a lot of ups and downs, culminating in the killing of Wes Banning, the series now had to get into who Matthias truly was. Jace had been left to die in the previous episode until Marisa found him in her house, and there was this additional angle of surveillance in the house. There was someone listening in on all of Marisa’s conversations, but she wasn’t aware of the fact that her house had been bugged. The episode got into it all and more as Mercer got closer to catching Matthias and solving the case.
Spoilers Ahead
How Did Mercer Figure Out James Was Lying?
At the beginning of the episode, we saw a young Alec Mercer with his friend Ericson just days before the bombing of the church.

The seventh episode of The Irrational really tried too hard to fit many plotlines into the mix and acted like the episode was a feature film rather than a 40-minute affair. There is the Mercer and Rose Dinshaw romantic angle at play again, and it seems the behavioral scientist seems to have found his match when it comes to reading clues and solving cases. Then suddenly, there is a heavy emotional subplot between Kylie and Marisa. It became clear the makers wanted to keep these characters on screen for just a little bit, so we don’t get absorbed in the romantic plot and then find the series a little jarring seeing other characters show up in the next episode doing their things. The effect is that we neither get immersed in the case Rose and Mercer solve together, which is so convoluted it makes one’s head spin, nor...

Some things take time, and it is a lesson worth remembering.
When The Irrational Season 1 premiered, its biggest shortcoming was that it did nothing for the characters. They were strangers who happened to be good at solving crimes. We knew nothing about them.
Throughout the season, the show has been trying to fill the gaps in certain aspects of the characters' lives, and The Irrational Season 1 Episode 7 was quite different from other episodes.
For the first time, the show focused on developing relationships between characters, as Mercer went on an atypical date with Rose while Kylie and Marisa tried to rekindle their friendship.
Even if events happened on those two fronts, the art case dominated most of Rose and Mercer's time together. We are not getting a balanced episode with character development and exciting cases.
However, as long as the show delivers good cases, it's Ok.

The sixth episode of The Irrational brings yet another interesting case for Alec Mercer to solve, but this time, the case also brings the focus back to Mercer’s own insecurities and issues with being vulnerable and empathetic to a situation, apart from the usual academic reading of someone’s behavior. The Irrational Episode 6 begins with Marisa investigating further in the church bombing case, and she too gets a heads up about the ‘optics’ of the case, where she may be seen in a bad light given that she is solving her ex-husband’s case with his own help. Her budding relationship with her FBI colleague, Jace, is also brought into question. The rest of the characters take a back seat, except Mercer’s sister, Kylie. She becomes the beating heart of the story as she fights to help his friend Mason get justice for the wrongful death of his husband Joshua,...

We'd lost you for a short minute there!
After how disappointing the preceding case-centric episode of The Irrational was, the show's feel turned on The Irrational Season 1 Episode 6.
It has been a thrilling ride with many twists in many episodes of Season 1 and enjoyable. However, not everything can be one thing, and this episode was proof of that.
It seemed like they were gunning for a certain feel and to evoke emotions, and they were successful in that.
The cases that Mercer takes are usually personal on some level, but Mason's was even more personal because it came from a heartfelt appeal by Kylie.
Using the case, Mercer exposed many issues in the justice system, but among them was bias.
He showed how bias can get someone injured, jailed, or even worse, killed like Joshua.
It is almost impossible to eliminate bias from people, but making them aware that...

The fifth episode of The Irrational plays much more in goofy territory as compared to the previous ones. There is no murder or kidnapping to solve for Alec Mercer, but a simple poker cheating scandal. By bringing the stakes down, the show, quite surprisingly, hits the right tone, which accommodates all the psychological jargon quite nicely. The previous episodes had something very serious going on at times, where Mercer explaining the ‘zero-sum’ bias or some other phenomenon felt a little out of place. Here, there is a threat of something nasty happening, but the tone is nicely balanced to reassure us that it never will, and we can sit back and enjoy Mercer cracking the case through his knowledge and acute observational skills.

The Irrational's allure is the cases it tackles.
For the past four episodes, they have delivered exciting cases with us at the edge of our seats while keeping our ears peeled and our minds engaged.
Nothing is one thing only, and even the best formats have downsides. That was the case with The Irrational Season 1 Episode 5.
In many procedurals, you can expect a fun time when Vegas is the destination.
The city is always bustling with revelers, some for a fun time and others for something else.
The hour saw Mercer and his odd team pack their bags for Vegas, but they were not there for a merry old time.
A former teaching assistant of Mercer was in trouble, and the least Mercer could do was help her.
I'll admit that I don't know a lot about regular gambling, let alone something as organized as a casino.

The fourth episode of The Irrational is out now, and it features yet another interesting case for Alec Mercer to solve. In this episode, we get to see more of Wes Banning as well, who is the only suspect the FBI has in the church bombing case. Mercer was knee-deep in responsibilities, so he delegated a few of them, like teaching his class and grading his students, to Rizwan. While Mercer solved the new case, he picked up on an interesting phenomenon of human psychology known as the “zero-sum bias,” which became pivotal in understanding the case. The show becomes Sherlock-esque in nature, becoming reluctant to depart from the overused deduction skills, but overall, the performances and fast-paced writing keep the show afloat. Here is a recap of The Irrational Episode 4.

It is irrefutable that this show will never fail to deliver an interesting case, at least from what we've seen so far.
While doing that, it entertains and tickles the brain.
The Irrational Season 1 Episode 4 explored various complex concepts pertaining to relationships among family members, whether biological or not.
To do that, they introduced the zero-sum bias and demonstrated that within an atypical family unit.
There are two kinds of secrets. A well-kept secret is limited to one or two people or an open secret where many people know or suspect something, but it's treated as something that should not be a topic of discussion.
The Moore family secret was the latter.
Kidnappings are a serious issue because kidnappers usually grow paranoid, especially as time lapses and they think they might get caught.
For many people, no response is proportionate enough, but Keith had come to trust Mercer after spending hours listening to Mercer's books.

James Mercer has confirmed that he’s working on a fresh batch of songs which may become The Shins’ first new album since 2017’s Heartworms.
The confirmation came in an interview on a new episode of The Story Behind the Song, in which Mercer revealed that at least 17 songs are in the works for his next project.
“September, I’m going to buckle down,” Mercer told host Peter Csathy. “I’ve got a bunch of songs. I think it was 17 songs that are partially-recorded already. So, I’m always working on something. I’m always fiddling with the guitar and searching for those moments, you know? So, I’ve got a bunch of stuff. And I don’t know how long it’ll take, but I’ll start in September, and I’ll do another Shins record.”

A brand-new Monday means a new episode of The Irrational and a new case for Mercer and the team.
The Irrational has cemented itself as a case-centric procedural with little focus on the characters' personal lives.
It should not come as a surprise that The Irrational Season 1 Episode 4 focuses heavily on a case, as spoilers for the episode tease an arduous undertaking made more challenging by a complex family history.
Mercer Takes on a Kidnapping Case
Typically, Mercer gets called to a crime scene, or someone approaches them directly to take on their case.
Remember on The Irrational Season 1 Episode 1 when the governor asked Mercer for a favor or when Cj wanted help solving her supposed murder on The Irrational Season 1 Episode 2?
It is not atypical for people to ask for Mercer's help; this time, a desperate father finds Mercer and asks for help finding his daughter.

The third episode of the new series The Irrational was a bit of a dud as compared to the other episodes. Sure, Alec Mercer’s original case, i.e., the Church Bombing case, got some impetus, but overall, the case Mercer had to solve in this episode lacked the twists and turns we have come to expect with The Irrational. Nevertheless, Alec Mercer remains a charming and dependable character with no rough edges. The last thing we want in the series is an angsty protagonist. The case was technically much bigger than Mercer had solved, but strangely, the stakes seemed low. Let’s take a look at the recap of Mercer and his world, where he is required by his wife Marisa to help the FBI solve a case.
Spoilers Ahead
What Was Mercer’s New Case?
In the previous episode, Mercer had remembered something about the church bombing case that happened 19 years ago.

The Irrational has found a formula and decided to stick to it.
And while I initially critiqued that formula, it has taken three episodes to get used to it and find its beauty.
Even if more could be done where the show's characters are concerned, having the cases dominate the episode is more interesting than writing cliché backstories to the characters.
It is also better than giving characters storylines that don't make sense or add anything to the story.
After watching The Irrational Season 1 Episode 3, it became clear that the show was looking to develop its main characters slowly while exploring other aspects of human existence that the five or so characters can never encapsulate.
The hour saw Mercer and his team dig deep into the final moments of an aviator to determine why they crashed a plane as they were accused of.

If something doesn't seem right, Mercer is on it and will uncover the truth come rain or come shine.
If there's anything The Irrational has proved in the two episodes it has aired, it's not dull as far as the cases it tackles are concerned.
One can expect an exciting premise for every case, and the investigation until a solution is found is also quite interesting.
The show doesn't seem to be in a hurry to flesh out most of its characters, but as long as they keep delivering these kinds of cases, it is worth dedicating someone's 10 p.m. on Sundays to see what new they have cooked up.

Besides the weekly cases that require the services of “The Irrational” hero Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin), the behavioral psychology expert is also trying to solve his own case: Who was responsible for the bombing several years ago that left him horribly scarred?
Monday night’s episode of the NBC procedural, “Dead Woman Walking,” in which Mercer figured out who poisoned an investigative journalist with polonium, ended with him remembering something vital from the night of the bombing, of which he has almost no memory. Using different scents combined with fire, he remembered the logo on the vehicle the bomber was driving.
Series director and producer Jesse Warn recently spoke with TheWrap about Mercer’s own mystery and why the show absolutely depends on the charm of the former “Flash” star.

The second episode of The Irrational brings us a case centered on a very unorthodox murder. A woman is murdered by the use of Polonium 210. Well, there is another twist in the show—this woman is not actually dead yet. She realizes that she has been poisoned and contacts the brilliant behavioral scientist Alec Mercer to catch her killer while she is still alive. She truly believes she stands no chance and will die soon. Mercer has the most unusual case on hand, but along with his ex-wife Marisa, he begins the hunt and risks Polonium poisoning himself. Apart from this, there is also the original case with Wes Banning and the church bombing. Mercer tries to focus his mind, trying to bring back his memories regarding the event. The episode focuses on Mercer’s way of dealing with pressure and his ability to seek out dangerous situations, even though...

What The Irrational lacks in compelling characters, it makes up for with exciting cases.
The Irrational Season 1 Episode 2 delivered another case for Professor Mercer where a good friend of his sought his help to find her killer before she passed away.
It was an emotional hour as the show dived into complicated relationships between parents and their children and colleagues.
There was also a nod to the season conflict introduced in the series premiere, where Mercer couldn't remember the circumstances under which he sustained severe burns.
The hour saw him try to trigger his memories by recreating a smell that dominated the air on that tragic day.
Cj's case was interesting, and it all related to its introduction. Rarely does someone participate in the hunt for their killer.
It was stuff straight out of a whodunit thriller like Knives Out.
Cj: I need your help solving a murder.
Mercer: Oh yeah.

“The Irrational” is putting the power of free gifts to the test. In a new Episode 2 clip obtained exclusively by TheWrap, Professor Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) walks his students though how to use the promise of free merchandise and trips to find someone who doesn’t want to be found.
The clip revolves around a brainstorming session between Alec and his two protégés, psychology grad student Rizwan (Arash DeMaxi) and grad student assistant Phoebe (Molly Kunz). The task? Draw a man out of hiding who doesn’t want to be found.
It only takes a moment before Rizwan suggests using the “power of free” to their advantage. The idea is that someone would be more willing to give up their location if they think they can get something for free out of the deal. Together, Phoebe and Rizwan figure out an organization their target has already accepted merchandise from — a website called ProChessFans.

The Walking Dead, the long-running post-apocalyptic horror series based on the comic books by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, has finally come to an end after 11 seasons and 177 episodes. The show, which premiered on AMC in 2010, followed a group of survivors led by former sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) as they faced the threats of zombies, hostile humans, and their own inner demons in a world overrun by the undead.
The final season of The Walking Dead, which was split into three parts, adapted material from issues #175–193 of the comic book series and introduced two new factions: the Commonwealth, a large network of communities that had advanced equipment and over fifty thousand survivors living in their settlements; and the Reapers, a mysterious group of hostile survivors that attacked and took Meridian, the former home of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and her new people, the Wardens.

Pink has a tiny new fan with an epic birth story. During one of the singer’s Summer Carnival Tour stops at Boston’s Fenway Park, a pregnant concertgoer went into labour at the show.
Angela Mercer of Albany, New York, had traveled to Boston, Massachusetts, with family members to attend Pink’s July 31 show while she was 31 weeks pregnant, according to a press release from the city’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. As she began feeling strong contractions shortly after arriving for Pink’s performance, Mercer placed a call to her doctor who urged her to head to the hospital right away.
“With all the traffic surrounding Fenway for the concert, Angela had trouble finding a ride to the hospital. She and her family decided the fastest way to get to Brigham and Women’s was to walk – and so, decked out in their concert outfits, they made the...

Power Outage
The power outage, based on the Western North American blackouts of 1996, has affected the whole city even further. But contrary to what Nicky thinks, the outage has nothing to do with Ex Nihilo’s plan. And it is just ludicrous to see Nicky rejoice to hear about the outage on the radio as he, Solomon, and Delirium escape the city. How can a bomb that detonates on the side of a building that has...

City on Fire extinguishes its first season on Friday, June 16, and huge revelations and reversals are in the offing. As fans of the intricately plotted Apple TV+ drama know, the July 4th shooting of enigmatic Samantha (Chase Sui Wonders) remains unsolved, her smitten pal Charlie (Wyatt Oleff) has exposed the arson ring she was connected to, druggie musician William (Nico Tortorella) — after getting clean and reuniting with his uptown sister Regan (Jemima Kirke) — has been stabbed by their bitchy, shifty step-uncle (John Cameron Mitchell), and, oh yeah, New York has been plunged into the Northeast Blackout of 2003. It’s been quite the journey for this disparate group, from the grungy underground music scene and murder-for-hire plots to a crumbling marriage and a gorgeously directed, wordless exchange between estranged siblings. Along the way, the characters have crisscrossed and collided in ways we never saw coming, especially back in January ...

Thank you, God. You know why I’m saying this. Episode 6 of City on Fire is the beginning of the end, and the person, whom God saved, is needed to solve the case of Samantha Yeug’s shooting. Many dark secrets will come to light, featuring events from the past when Regan was a young, single woman full of fire. By the way, let’s remember the word “fire” because it also has a role to play in this episode. So let’s begin.
Spoilers Ahead
Absolution
William is alive. He is able to pull himself out of the water and onto a speedboat, and he escapes before he can be spotted, only to reach his father’s farmhouse, where he meets Jacob, his father’s assistant and the farmhouse’s present caretaker, apparently. Back at his studio, Parsa and McFadden inform Mercer that William was last spotted being chased by someone onto a ferry.

Apple TV+ will be premiering the eight-episode series City on Fire, inspired by Garth Risk Hallberg’s bestselling novel, on May 12, 2023. The first three episodes will be released simultaneously, followed by new episodes on Fridays. The season’s finale is set to air on June 16th.
City on Fire takes place in New York City, and in an interview with NPR in October 2015, author Hallberg – who grew up in North Carolina – explained why he chose NYC as the setting. “I fell in love with New York at some indeterminate point in my early years,” said Hallberg. “Something about the city captured my imagination in a way that even Middle-Earth and Narnia couldn’t — because it was somehow real.”
Hallberg added: “So I guess I was dreaming my way into it long before I realized that I was going to write about it.”
