Dev Patel, who will receive Gold House’s A1 honor in entertainment and media, spent over six years bringing “Monkey Man” to the big screen, and it wasn’t an easy journey for the actor turned writer-director.
“Monkey Man” was initially set to shoot in India, but filming was delayed due to the pandemic. At one point, the production was almost shelved. Patel ended up shooting on location in Indonesia.
Along the way, Jordan Peele saw the film and became attached as a producer. His company, Monkeypaw Prods., was a producer on the film, which is distributed by Universal. “I was just trying to find a way to tell this story. I wanted it out there,” Patel said at the film’s premiere at SXSW. “I reluctantly got pushed into the driver’s seat and it unfolded from there.”

“I’ve felt that being called ‘niche’ is a compliment, actually,” Monkey Man star Sobhita Dhulipala tells Deadline.
It is nighttime in India when we catch up with the star, and we are discussing a recent profile that dubbed her a “niche Indian actress.”
“In India, there’s the conventional idea of a mainstream commercial film star where they love you because you entertain and give them escape, but you’re not really accountable as an actor to stand for anything,” she explains. “I guess my expectation from a different kind of actor who does films that reach my heart and travel with me would be somehow more personal, and that is a bit of a niche.”
Dhulipala’s choice of roles has reflected this mentality. Born in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, she followed the career pipeline that takes a person from beauty pageants to acting, a path trodden by Priyanka Chopra,...

Colman Domingo never imagined he would be “a 100 of anything.”
“The fact that I’m one of the 100 most influential people in the world feels like I have a lot to live up to, and I want to because I don’t take that lightly,” Domingo told Variety on the red carpet at the Time100 Gala Thursday night. “The fact that someone in some committee believed that I’m impacting many people on this planet, I feel like now the work begins even more so. I know that I have to be even more mindful and thoughtful about how I create and the work that I do.”
Hosted by Taraji P. Henson at Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City, the Time100 Gala celebrated this year’s most influential figures across film, sports, music and more, including Domingo, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, 21 Savage, Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson, Fantasia Barrino and Henson herself.

Two of spring’s starriest releases arrive on digital platforms this week. Neither was a commercial sensation, but each attracted enough buzz to signal long shelf lives ahead. Watch one when you get home from seeing “Challengers.”
The contender to watch this week: “Love Lies Bleeding“
For her sophomore feature, Rose Glass, one of the coolest directors working today, made an erotic lesbian crime thriller starring Kristen Stewart as an ’80s gym manager who falls hard for a bodybuilder (Katy O’Brian), not realizing her new lady has ties to her estranged gangster father (a long-haired Ed Harris). It’s an electric movie oozing with noirish grime, but it wasn’t quite the runaway hit A24 was probably hoping for, collecting a modest $8.7 million at the worldwide box office despite Stewart’s star power. Still, “Love Lies Bleeding” seems destined for cult-favorite status, and Glass has gained a lifetime’s worth of clout.

With the AFM heading to Las Vegas, a group of indie filmmakers are aiming to launch a “new film market and entertainment industry convention” in LA this October.
Organizers say The American Film Convention (AFC) will take place October 15-17, 2024 at Magic Box in Downtown Los Angeles.
CEO and founder Mitesh Patel, a grassroots independent filmmaker and producer, says the event will incorporate a “market, auction, conference, product and service showcase, workshop, talks and addresses, pitch fest, networking event, and filmed and live entertainment.”
As part of its offering organizers say it is aiming to “fill the gap” left by the departing AFM.
The organizers are ambitious: “The event offers more than 100,000 square feet of exhibition space and has room for 400 exhibitors and participants. We expect the convention to draw about 5,000 delegates in its first year,” they said.

An exciting new voice has officially entered the action sphere.
Actor Dev Patel had previously dabbled in the action genre by leading the cast of 2018's "The Wedding Guest." But with "Monkey Man," his feature directorial debut which he also co-wrote, produced, and stars in, Patel took a deep dive into the type of visceral, hard-hitting filmmaking that has redefined the genre over the past decade or so. The experience of getting the movie across the finish line wasn't easy -- he suffered a broken bone during filming -- but along the way, he managed to achieve some transcendent moments of action cinema glory that will forever endear him to fans of martial arts films.

With Scarlett Johansson now in talks to star in the new Jurassic World movie, scooper Daniel Richtman has added a couple more casting rumours to the fire. According to Richtman, Colman Domingo (Euphoria) and Dev Patel (Monkey Man) are being eyed to star in the Jurassic World relaunch.
There’s no information on who Dev Patel might play in the Jurassic World movie, but Richtman added that Colman Domingo is being eyed to play the villain. Take all this with a grain of salt for now, but Patel and Domingo would make for excellent additions to the cast.

Dev Patel is the latest actor who could be poised to join Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic sequel, which will also star Scarlett Johansson.
Dev Patel, who recently turned director and action star with Monkey Man, is said to be ‘in talks’ to co-star in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) reboot, which has been dubbed Jurassic City.
The report comes via the reliably connected Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel); if all goes to plan, then Patel will co-star alongside Scarlett Johansson – not to mention a number of CGI dinosaurs – in the upcoming film.
It’s likely we’ll be hearing one or two more similar casting announcements over the next few months, given that production is having to move at a fast pace on the next Jurassic film. Over the weekend, Universal Pictures released Dev Patel's action flick "Monkey Man" in theaters, while 20th Century Studios unleashed the horror prequel "The First Omen" on audiences. Both were competing against "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" in its second weekend and, frankly, they never stood a chance. But they also weren't necessarily gunning for the top spot as these were more counterprogramming moves from both studios. Be that as it may, both films came in on the lower end of expectations, which shaped the narrative around their performance to something akin to "bad." I'm here to offer the other perspective which is more akin to "good."
"Monkey Man" debuted at number two on the charts with a $10.1 million opening. The film, which serves as Patel's feature directorial debut, had been expected to pull in anywhere between $16 and $25 million on the more optimistic side of things That obviously didn't come to pass.

Exclusive: The director of Riz Ahmed and Rogan Productions’ Channel 4 series Defiance: Fighting the Far Right has opened up about how the show spotlights generational differences within the British Asian community.
Defiance, which launched earlier this week to positive reviews, shines a stark light on the violent struggles of the British Asian community in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, and is told over three hours of interviews and archival footage.
Satiyesh Manoharajah tells Deadline that the show co-produced by Oscar-nominated British Asian star Ahmed explores themes of conflict within the South Asian community, between the older generation who wanted to maintain a low profile and the younger ones who felt that staying quiet was going to get them nothing of significance. This, he adds, is particularly stark due to the fact that the the first British Asian Prime Minister was appointed two years ago.

Although people expected happy box office news following the release of two fresh titles – Dev Patel’s Monkey Man and Disney’s The First Omen, it unfortunately wasn’t the case. Making a surprisingly weak entry, which brought the weekend total to a lower-than-expected scenario, the two movies failed to snatch Sydney Sweeney’s position as box office Queen.

Celebrating big news as Immaculate, achieved a remarkable milestone, despite low expectations, Sydney Sweeney appears to continue her trend of delivering silent hits, like her previous film, Anyone But You. Saving the box office single-handedly, Sweeney appears to be on her way to topple Dev Patel’s film, as it failed to revive the box-office despite optimistic predictions.

As a movie lover, one of the most wonderful pleasures of this passion is discovering new filmmakers with their own identity, style, and message. There’s almost always something special about a feature film debut from an unknown director, but when it’s from a highly popular actor with an overwhelmingly positive public opinion, the expectations surrounding the movie inevitably change. Dev Patel directs, writes – along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai) – produces, and stars in Monkey Man, whose story described as “John Wick in Mumbai” was deemed too heavy for the Indian audience by Netflix, prompting Jordan Peele (Get Out) to watch it, buy it, and give it a theatrical release window, so impressed he was.

All Dev Patel knew was: The man was wearing a rubber monkey mask. Past that, everything else was a mystery.

Exhibitor convention CinemaCon starts tomorrow in Las Vegas, and it would be great to kick off with happy box office news. That’s not the case with surprisingly weak results for two fresh titles, “Monkey Man” (Universal) and “The First Omen” (Disney). They brought the weekend total lower than expected and suggested an already-weak April could slide toward a worst-case scenario.
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.) repeated as #1 in its second week, more than tripling the take for #2, Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man.” The franchise’s 60 percent drop isn’t bad, given an opening weekend that included Good Friday and the Easter holidays. It’s grossed $135 million U.S./Canada in 10 days.
After March revitalized the concept of franchises and sequels as an essential part of the distribution ecosystem, the hope was April would demonstrate continued audience interest in lower-budgeted original titles — as evidenced earlier this year...

"Monkey Man" is on track to make a nice bit of change at the box office this weekend, and good financial returns often lead quickly to sequel talk. First-time director Dev Patel is having none of that, though; as he told Variety this week, he's more focused on seeing his first baby make its way into the world.
"I'm trying not to get ahead of myself," Patel told the outlet when asked about possible sequel plans for the criminal underworld-set action thriller. "I know this sounds like a cliché," he continued, "but just to [...] birth this little thing, it's been a huge undertaking. This is all a dream come true."
We don't blame Patel for wanting to let the dust on "Monkey Man" settle before thinking of future projects. The road to this movie's theatrical release has been long, complex, and surprisingly gory. Patel tore his shoulder and broke his hand during filming,...

You might have heard praises of Dev Patel‘s Monkey Man everywhere. Patel’s Labor of Love is an intense, high-octane action-thriller soaked in vengeance and served on a delightful platter of emotion and culturally rich optics. After rave reviews and accolades at film festivals, the movie was finally released worldwide on April 5. And despite stiff competition from Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, the movie has swept into second place.
Among the new movies, Moneky Paw Production’s Monkey Man outperforms 20th Century Studios’ The First Omen, with $10.5 million to $8 million+. While Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire still holds strong. The movie was expected to make around $50 million at the domestic box office but made $80 million.
The box office numbers worldwide were also mindblowing as it made a whopping $194 million instead of its expected $135 million.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” dominated the domestic box office again, looming large over newcomers “Monkey Man” and “The First Omen.”
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s monster tentpole added $31.7 million from 3,948 theaters in its second weekend of release. Ticket sales dropped a standard (for a tentpole of its size and scale) 60% from its mighty $80 million debut and stand at $132 million domestically and $361 million globally.
First-time director Dev Patel’s action thriller “Monkey Man” nabbed second place with $10.1 million from 3,029 venues, while Disney and 20th Century’s supernatural prequel “The First Omen” trailed at the No. 4 spot with a muted $8.4 million from 3,375 locations.
Both “Monkey Man” and “The First Omen” were destined for streaming — and not the big screen. With “Monkey Man,” originally set at Netflix, Universal Pictures landed rights for $10 million after filmmaker Jordan Peele (whose production company has a distribution deal with Universal) saw the movie and...
