This article contains spoilers for "The Nun II."
The events of "The Nun II" pick up four years after "The Nun," with Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) called once again to assist with taking down the demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons) following a string of priest murders throughout Europe. Unfortunately, Sister Irene doesn't know what audiences who saw the previous film already do, which is that Valak has been using Maurice "Frenchie" Theriault's (Jonas Bloquet) body as a vessel, as proven by the inverted cross embedded in his skin. When we catch up with Frenchie, he's started working at a girl's boarding school as a handyman, and in a will-they/won't-they relationship with one of the teachers, Kate (Anna Popplewell). He's become somewhat of a father figure to her daughter, Sophie (Katelyn Rose Downey), and has built a wonderful life for himself. Alas, Valak refuses to stay contained for long, and Sister...

You can’t keep a good demon down — not when they can still bring in the crowds.
You might have thought the title character met its end in 2018’s The Nun, having been fed the blood of Christ and all. But since that film became the highest-grossing entry in the Conjuring Universe, there was little doubt that it would return in a sequel featuring a Roman numeral in its title. Thus arrives The Nun II, bringing you more of the same, only with even more jump scares engineered by sadistic sound technicians who crank the volume up to 11 as if they were torturing lab animals.
Directed by Michael Chavis, a Conjuring veteran who previously helmed the entries The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (how was that last one not a parody?), this 1956-set installment once again features Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene,...

Early commuters were surprised to see seven nuns dressed in a demonic fashion this morning in London at several well-known landmarks. This signals the upcoming release of ‘The Nun II’ on September 8th, 2023.
Early in the morning, there were reports of frightening nuns near St Paul’s Cathedral. They later appeared on the Millennium Bridge, wearing their traditional habits, and even levitated across the Thames to scare commuters on the south side of the river. These nuns seem to have adapted to life in the city and were seen boarding a bus to Seven Sisters, presumably to return home and continue their mischievous actions.
And after evading discovery in the capital, the mystifying robed figures—appearing to defy gravity by the sea—were reported by a couple strolling on the beach by Seven Sisters Cliffs in East Sussex, with the nuns spooking people on the south coast too.

September has turned into an odd month this year, in terms of its box office prospects. September is always a bit quiet with that post-summer hangover, but this year the dual strikes have all but shut down Hollywood, with stars and writers not able to promote projects making things feel particularly quiet. But as "The Nun II" attempts to keep the unbroken hot streak going for the franchise, the latest chapter in The Conjuring Universe may also be able to scare up a hit that theaters could sorely use as the strikes drag on.
Directed by Michael Chaves, "The Nun II" is currently tracking for an opening in the $30 million range, per Deadline. That would be lower than "The Nun," which opened to a huge $53 million back in 2018. That said, it would still be a win for Warner Bros. and New Line, as these movies have, at most, cost $40 million to produce.

Hold on to your habits, because the scariest sister, the berobed baddie herself, queen horror of all horrors in The Conjuring Universe -- Valak -- is back on the big screen. "The Nun II" had an advance premiere last night ahead of a September 8 wide release, and early buzz is pouring in from critics.
Directed by Michael Chaves, who helmed "The Curse of La Llorona" and the third "Conjuring" film, "The Nun II" will pick up right where the first film left off. In Corin Hardy's "The Nun," a novitiate nun named Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) teams up with Maurice, a village hottie nicknamed Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), and Father Burke (Demián Bichir), the Vatican's local exorcist, to wage holy war on the sinister demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons), who has taken root in a decrepit Romanian monastery. It's 1952, and none of the events of the preceding or subsequent Conjuring films have yet taken place.

Actress Taisaa Farmiga, who is all set to return as Sister Irene in ‘The Nun 2’, has spoken about returning to the franchise after four years. She also revealed what she liked about her character and the script.
The sequel to the hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun. Farmiga is joined again by Jonas Bloquet as Maurice, along with Storm Reid as Sister Debra, Anna Popplewell as Kate and Bonnie Aarons (reprising her role from ‘The Nun’).
“What I really loved about the script is this beautiful partnership and friendship between these two empowered female characters…”, says Farmiga as she talks about reprising her role as Sister Irene.

The Nun 2 is the latest installment in The Conjuring Universe, and it promises to bring back one of the most terrifying villains of the franchise: Valak, the demonic nun. In an exclusive interview with Total Film magazine, director Michael Chaves explains why Valak is such a memorable and scary character, and how he approached the sequel.
“I really think that the Nun is a classic movie monster,” Chaves says. “She reminds me of Pennywise and Dracula and Nosferatu. I see every classic monster when I look at her. I feel like she’s absolutely up there in that pantheon.”

While much of the attention on The Nun has been focused on Taissa Farmiga, Demián Bichir, and Bonnie Aarons, Jonas Bloquet is an integral part of the story and has a fun role as “Frenchie,” balancing between comic relief and capable, demon-fighting hero. I recently had a chance to catch up with Jonas, who told me about his love of The Conjuring series, joining the cast, and filming in Romania:
How did you get involved with The Nun? How did the script come your way and what did you think when you read it?
Jonas Bloquet: For years, my manager kept telling me, "You have to come to Los Angeles. I want to introduce you to the casting directors." A year and a half ago I came to Los Angeles and I had one audition, and that one audition was for The Nun. It went great. I had to self-tape back in France,...

It is with a degree of surprise that we have seen the development of The Conjuring universe over the last few years. Starting with the 2013 smash horror hit The Conjuring (inspired by the case studies of real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren) director James Wan put the wicked wheels in motion for a horror franchise and since then we have had demonic doll Annabelle (from the first film) inspire two movies of her own and Wan deliver a 2016 Conjuring sequel. Now, after scaring the ‘bee-jesus’ out of audiences, as a side-character in James Wan’s aforementioned excellent The Conjuring 2 (also known as The Conjuring: The Enfield Poltergeist), demon Valak (or ‘The Nun’) returns in her own spin-off origin film.
Like 2014’s Annabelle, The Nun is an instalment in the series that feels less deep, emotive or impactful than its franchise brethren but despite the script borrowing from cliché,...

Warning: the following post contains complete spoilers for The Nun!
Going into a prequel movie like The Nun can be tricky. After all, we already know how it should end: the demon Valak, better and more ominously known as The Nun, will have to emerge victorious if it's going to eventually move on to haunt Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) in The Conjuring 2. The characters of Father Burke (Demián Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) are doomed from the start. Without giving too much away, I was pleasantly surprised by the way the creative powers that be handled the story. If you're curious about how they managed to pull off their twist, I'm outlining the entire ending below. This is your last chance to turn back!

Going in to see The Nun, there's no real mystery as to how it connects to the rest of the films in The Conjuring's expanding universe. After all, the demon Valak appears as the habit-donning monster in The Conjuring 2 and even shows up during a postcredits scene at the and of Annabelle: Creation. The real mystery, of course, is how. How does a terrifying nun monster from the 1900s come to haunt Lorraine Warren? Luckily, we do get an answer by the end of The Nun; not only does it connect back to the universe, but it also gives us a supercool full-circle moment that lands right back in The Conjuring's first film. Last chance to turn back before I spoil some things!

In support of The Nun arriving in theaters today, I had a chance to talk with Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir along with other journalists at a recent press day. As newcomers to the “Conjuring” universe of monster movies, Taissa and Demián discussed preparing for their roles, their belief in the supernatural, getting scared by Bonnie Aarons and more:
Prior to filming, how did you prepare for the role of Sister Irene?
Taissa Farmiga: I wasn't raised Catholic and I didn't have much experience with nuns, but I really wanted to provide authenticity to the character because you're playing someone who's chosen this life of dedication and commitment. That takes a very specific inner strength, and I really wanted to know more about that. I wanted to know the details of the day-to-day struggle.
One thing I really wanted to incorporate was the physicality of it. So you're always watching yourself and correcting yourself.

“The Nun” is technically a prequel in the ever-expanding “Conjuring” film universe, telling something of an origin story for Valak, the super-scary demon nun of “The Conjuring 2.” But thanks to various teases, we know Valak is tied a little more deeply into all the movies surrounding “The Conjuring” than it might have seemed before.
The events of “The Nun” take place in 1952 in a Romanian convent that sees some spooky things happen. A miracle-hunting priest, Father Burke (Demián Bichir), and a young nun, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) are sent to investigate the place. Spoiler alert: Valak’s there, and things get pretty scary.

In 2013, James Wan’s “The Conjuring” took the horror world and the box office by storm, with a terrifying possession film allegedly based on the real-life experiences of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), demonology experts called in by the Catholic Church. In the 2016 “The Conjuring 2,” Lorraine is haunted by a truly horrific vision of a demonic nun, later revealed to be the demon Valek. The demon nun was one of the film’s scariest creations, and it wasn’t long before an origin-story spinoff was in the works.

“The Nun” earned $5.4 million in previews on Thursday, making it the highest pre-show earner in the “Conjuring” universe.
In comparison, “Annabelle: Creation” grossed $4 million in previews last year, while “The Conjuring 2” made $3.4 million in 2016. In 2014, “Annabelle” earned $2.1 million, while the first “Conjuring” grossed $3.3 million in 2013.
So far, the highest-grossing opener in the franchise is the first “Conjuring,” which opened to $41.8 million, followed by its sequel, “Conjuring 2,” with $40.4 million.

“The Nun,” directed by Corin Hardy, is expected to open in the high $40 million range this weekend from 3,700 screens, with the most optimistic projections reaching $52 million. When you’re a filmmaker playing in the James Wan-iverse sandbox, expectations are going to be high amongst fans, and for the most part, I feel like director Corin Hardy rises to the occasion with The Nun, his lovingly crafted tribute to Hammer Horror that dives into the backstory of Valak (Bonnie Aarons), the demonic force introduced in The Conjuring 2. While The Nun has some issues with tone and pacing, especially in the first half of the film, once the story settles in for the finale, that’s when Hardy’s love for the genre shines through, with this newest piece of The Conjuring cinematic puzzle coming together to deliver a solidly entertaining finale that finally taps into just what makes Valak so terrifying on screen.

The Nun is a bad movie. Born from a particularly successful jump scare in The Conjuring 2 - a film I quite enjoyed - Corin Hardy's The Nun struggles to conjure even a fraction of the dread presented by its antecedent. Unfortunately, this attempt to expand the Conjuring universe falls flat, with poor pacing, unearned jump scares, and a general sense of laziness that reeks of cash-in. When the Vatican informs "miracle hunter" Father Burke (Demián Bichir) of a mysterious and gruesome suicide at a remote convent in Romania, he is sent on a hunt to determine the nature of this affront to God. By his side is novitiate nun, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), a young nun in training with a history of religious weirdness....

The Curse of La Llorona is the latest chapter of The Conjuring saga. We explain this modern shared cinematic horror movie universe!
Warning! Contains major spoilers for The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home, and all Conjuring movies!
It's kind of perfect that the only two successful major shared cinematic universes out there are superheroes and horror. Comics have been telling a sprawling, interconnected story since their inception, while the first connected film universe ever, the Universal Monsters, was a horror franchise. The Conjuring’s Annabelle, Valak, the Nun, and the Crooked Man are no Frankenstein's Monster or Dracula, but the mission is the same: scaring as many people as possible. What’s fun about all of these spin-offs and side stories is that they intentionally feature tiny epilogues or moments that feed into other films in the franchise. You don’t need to be aware of these touches...

Although blockbuster season officially came to a close Labor Day Weekend, “the darkest chapter” in The Conjuring universe isn’t intending on going quietly.
While early tracking had Valak the Defiler headed toward a respectable opening weekend haul – somewhere between $30 million and $40 million – the latest intel is suggesting The Nun could very well bow as high as $50 million. According to Variety, Corin Hardy’s (The Hallow) gothic horror has a decent shot at trouncing the nearly $42 million earned by The Conjuring on opening weekend, as The Nun is projected to debut betwixt $36 million to $45 million.
However, it should be noted there’s evidence denoting that a $50 million opening weekend’s entirely plausible, with some indicating that the film could gross in excess of the half-century mark. Regardless of where it’ll land, though, The Nun should easily take the weekend, as the Jennifer Garner-led Peppermint is expected to earn between $10 million and $15 million,...

No doubt there will be high hopes for director Corin Hardy’s first schlep into The Conjuring universe following his striking debut, The Hallow, in 2015. When Hardy’s mooted Crow “remake” was shelved, he was soon after announced as the one to tackle The Nun: an origin/spin off on The Conjuring 2’s prioress possessed by the demon Valak. When the first Annabelle solo film proved a success, a standalone Nun movie had to be set, with Hardy an apt choice to helm considering The Hallow’s top notch mending of tension with cosmic forest monsters. Sadly though, The Nun flounders onto our screens like a hotchpotch ghost train of botched schlock/pop horror, peppered with defective scares and a shrill, dithering plot. Too many clichéd scenes featuring characters creeping down dark corridors slow the pace instead of upping the pulse rate. For the better part, The Nun...

James Wan really knows how to create iconic movie monsters, and the demon-nun Valak is easily one of his most terrifying creations, with the painting scene from The Conjuring 2 being an all-time great scare. It was no surprise when the announcement dropped that “The Nun” was going to be part of The Conjuring’s expanded universe of monster movies, and thankfully, this film turned out to be a solid addition to the franchise, with good performances and enough gothic atmosphere to give any classic horror fan a smile.
The Nun is the earliest of the “Conjuring” films, chronologically speaking, taking us back to the early 1950s. The story jumps right into the middle of the action, when a nun takes her own life at a remote abbey in Romania. Looking to discover the reason behind the mysterious suicide, the Vatican summons Father Burke (Demián Bichir), who teams up with...

The twisted magic of the original Conjuring movie seems awfully distant these days, doesn’t it? In James Wan’s 2013 horror hit about a big blue collar family being tormented by an ancient demon, old-fashioned jump scares and a relentless sense of dread mixed expertly with a deeply human story; the fact that we cared about the characters made the chills that much more affecting (and that much more effective). Despite the studio budget, that ghost story possessed an elegant simplicity as well, with Wan fashioning one of the most...

While horror has seen its fair share of franchises over the years, James Wan’s 2013 “The Conjuring” has spawned a cinematic universe to rival Marvel, with a rogue’s gallery of creepy characters coming into play for interconnected spin-off films. 2016’s “The Conjuring 2” offered something especially horrifying, a demonic nun named Valek, that stalked the Warrens from Amityville to London before getting its own origin story with “The Nun.” But while “The Nun” has some veritable scares up its sleeve, it’s also proof that sometimes the most terrifying horrors are the ones we don’t understand.
Director Corin Hardy, best known for 2015’s Irish horror offering “The Hallow,” makes the most of the film’s Romanian setting, with Transylvania’s imposing and stunning Corvin Castle serving as a stand-in for the film’s ominous Abbey. The fifth film in the Conjuring Cinematic Universe, Corin Hardy’s “The Nun” looks to flesh out the story of Valak, a demonic nun first glimpsed in “The Conjuring 2,” and here seen taking hold of a remote Romanian abbey. But it never manages to answer the one question a spinoff would seem to exist to provide: What, exactly, does this otherworldly demon actually want? It certainly knows all of the tools of the trade – slowly turning crosses upside-down, casting ominous shadows, switching on old-timey radios, emerging from walls to grab terrified novitiates from behind, only to let go as soon as they scream. But as for its endgame, it doesn’t seem to have much in mind beyond punking the local clergy.

Corin Hardy’s The Nun skulks into Warner Brothers’ Conjurverse as light and airy as it skulks through its own demonic convent storyline. 1950s Romania boasts decades-old cavernous castle dreadfulness, forever the film’s most eye-catching and engaging feature. Hardy understands this. Cinematographer Maxime Alexandre understands this. Sweeping exterior shots soak-up every stony Eastern European inch of masonry clouded by foggy blankets, but staples of Wan’s possession universe are forgone relics in Hardy’s unholy monster mash. This, unfortunately, brands a more generic horror flavor – although still tasty as a sisterly bite of gothic Hammer chills.
Demián Bichir stars as priest Father Burke, sent by Vatican officials to investigate a nun’s sinful suicide. Alongside is Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), who serves as his gender-opposite insider contact. Their travels lead them to a rural Romanian farming village where the deceased nun’s dilapidated abbey stands far enough outside to drum up local legends.

Warner Bros. ended the summer on a remarkable high note as “Crazy Rich Asians” and “The Meg” combined to gross $240 million at the box office this past month. Now they look to keep that success going with New Line’s “The Nun,” the fifth installment in the “Conjuring” horror series.
While most studios have largely steered clear of releasing films — or at least major ones — in late August and early September, Warner Bros. has turned that into a slot where they can release a New Line mid-budget horror film to excellent results.
Last year, the studio released the “Conjuring” film “Annabelle: Creation” in August, which grossed $306 million globally against a $15 million budget.

The Nun is set to be released in theaters this week and I couldn't be more excited! I've been hearing so many great things about this movie. I'm a sucker for horror films and this one is probably going to scare the shit out of audiences.
To tide you over until you see the movie, we've got three creepy clips here for you to watch that are filled with scary nuns that are sure to haunt your nightmares.
The first clip features Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene being stalked by Bonnie Aarons’ Nun. The second clip shows Demian Bichir‘s Father Burke being hunted by a terrifying cult of faceless nuns. The final clip is pretty intense as it features Farminga as she is instructed to "keep praying…no matter what happens" but things don't turn out too well.

For the fifth weekend in a row Warner Bros. will rule the top of the box office, this time with New Line’s Conjuring spinoff The Nun which is expected to bring the Burbank, CA studio moola from heaven with an estimated $36M-$45M start at an estimated 3,700-plus locations. Two out of three tracking services have The Nun north of $40M, and there’s a very good chance that the Corin Hardy-directed pic will rep a record debut for The Conjuring universe, besting the first 2013 installment’s debut of $41.8M. Total awareness, first choice, and unaided awareness on The Nun is best with females under 25. Already we’re hearing that advance ticket sales are ahead of Annabelle: Creation and The Conjuring 2.

With a theatrical release penciled in for this Friday, September 7th, New Line’s aggressive marketing push for The Nun is now beginning to reach its shrill, blood-curdling crescendo.
And to prove it, Bloody Disgusting has relayed three suitably terrifying new promos for the Conjuring spinoff, teasing thrills, spills and demonic forces not of this world.
One particularly creepy clip revolves around Demian Bichir’s Father Burke, who finds himself smack bang in the middle of a supernatural trap. He looks to have journeyed deep within the bowels of the Cârța Monastery, only to be hunted by Valak, the titular entity capable of bending reality to her will – check out the hooded figures taunting Father Burke as he begins to descend into madness.

Vera Farmiga has been playing Demonologist and gifted clairvoyant Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring franchise since the first film debuted in 2013. With the Conjuringverse having taken off in a big way, Warner Bros. and New Line are now busy expanding it, with the latest spinoff, The Nun, hitting cinemas very soon. But the pic won’t just fill in some blanks in the story, it’ll also make the series a family affair, as Vera’s younger sister Taissa is set to pit herself against the sinister forces of the supernatural as Sister Irene.
With this family connection in the movies, a journalist asked Taissa at a press junket whether her older sister had given her any advice for working on the films, and her response was illuminating, to say the least.

While The Conjuring universe is world-renowned for producing a thoroughly spine-chilling experience at the cinema, the latest installment, The Nun, is vowing to be “the darkest chapter” yet and has just delivered a genuinely trepidatious gallery to prove it.

To quote an oft-used phrase in horror circles: reader beware, you’re in for a scare.
It’s one that can be traced back to R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series, of course, but it very much applies to today’s all-new teaser trailer for The Nun, New Line and Corin Hardy’s horror prequel poised to whisk viewers off to 1950s Romania, where a demonic force has sunk its teeth (literally and figuratively) into an unsuspecting monastery.
Even the church’s greatest exorcists, like Father Burke (Demián Bichir of Alien: Covenant), don’t stand much of a chance against Valak. She’s already been caught peering over Burke’s shoulder, for instance, but today’s promo cranks things up to 11 and leaves Bichir’s priest at the mercy of the Nun – so much so, that our protagonist finds himself trapped in a coffin with only Valak for company. Yikes!
