This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
X-Men ’97 ended with more than a few spinning plates. Sure, Bastion was defeated, but the events sent some of the X-Men to the far future and others into the past. And yet a few others were zapped to parts unknown, such as Wolverine, who remains in critical condition after Magneto ripped out his adamantium skeleton. Back in the present, Forge and Bishop make plans to find their friends. Then there’s the matter of Professor X and Magneto’s mental states, which seems to be pointing toward the coming of the terrible Onslaught.
As that last point reminds us, as wonderful as X-Men ’97 is, a lot of its power comes from the Marvel comics that it adapts. The first season of X-Men ’97 ran quickly through some important storylines from the comics, including Inferno, Mutant Massacre, Lifedeath, and Operation: Zero Tolerance.

“Tastes like chicken.” If that phrase brings to mind the evil mutant the Blob chowing down on the Wasp’s corpse, then the ending of X-Men ’97‘s eighth episode, “Tolerance Is Extinction Part One,” should send shivers down your spine.
After all, Magneto’s decision to attack the entire planet Earth in X-Men ’97 has a lot in common with the inciting event of Ultimatum, the 2009 Marvel event that somehow made the already grim and edgy Ultimate Marvel Universe even grimmer and edgier, to very mixed results.
The connections between Ultimatum and “Tolerance Is Extinction Part One” only stand out more when one considers all of the many cameos in the episode, which showed that anti-mutant bigotry isn’t just limited to the X-Men, but it affects the entire Marvel Universe.
Here’s a breakdown of all the cameos in the star-studded episode...

The X-Men: The Animated Series was a masterpiece in its finest form, and Larry Houston was one of the producers at the helm of it. Throughout the five seasons that it aired, fans were deeply in love with almost every story arc that the 1992 series decided to adapt. But even after such tremendous success with it, Houston still has one major regret about the show.

This regret is about his not exploring the character arc of a super-powerful yet long-forgotten hero, who was even more closely related to Scott Summers than what the non-comic book readers may expect. This character was Alex Summers, the younger brother of Scott and a mutant himself, best known as ‘Havoc.’ And as it turns out, Houston has immense regrets about it.

Rising from the ashes of X-Men: The Animated Series like a Dark Phoenix, X-Men ‘97 has done a stellar job of bringing fan-favorites like Scott, Jean, and Wolverine back into the fray. While Marvel Studios’ producer Brad Winderbaum has revealed that production is already underway for seasons 2 and 3, some sneaky hints suggest that the lineup of this colorful cartoon caper could soon look a little different.
The Original X-Men
X-Men ‘97 has largely stuck with the series staples of X-Men: The Animated Series, albeit with the additions of Morph and Bishop while swapping out Professor Xavier for a reformed Magneto. Several Easter eggs have referenced both old and new teams, with the season premiere reminding us the current roster is far from the original lineup of Charles Xavier’s Gifted Youngsters.
A nostalgic picture of the “original” team is on display at the school.

“They shall know my Inferno!” cries the Goblin Queen early in X-Men ’97‘s third episode. Now, the Goblin Queen has had a rough day, which began with her thinking that she was the real Jean Grey and ended with the revelation that she was a clone created by evil (but fashionable) geneticist Mr. Sinister. Her heel turn came so quick that she really didn’t have time to workshop her villain monologues.
Whatever the shortcomings in her baddie banter, the Goblin Queen makes up for it with evil powers. She immediately begins transforming the X-Mansion into a Hellscape, complete with a giant head in an elevator and a vision of Xavier as a monster from the anime classic Akira. Wild as these transformations are, they have nothing on the comic book storyline that inspired it.

Take a look at a trailer supporting Marvel Comics latest solo title, "Scarlet Witch", available January 4, 2023, written by Steve Orlando and illustrated by Sara Pichelli, with variant covers by Tom Reilley, Ivan Tao and a whole lot more:
"... there is a door that appears only to those who need it most, who have no one else in the world to turn to. On the other side of this door is the witchcraft shop.
"Friend or foe, human or otherwise - if your need is great and your hope is gone, there you will meet the 'Scarlet Witch'.
"'Wanda Maximoff' is familiar with hitting rock bottom - and now that she's finally found peace...
"... she's pledged all her power to help others who are languishing at their lowest.
"Along the way, Wanda will reconnect with her complex extended family including her twin brother 'Quicksilver', 'Polaris' and 'Vision'.

Aconyte Books’ “Dazzler: Sound of Light”, now available, based on Marvel Comics “School of X”, is written by Amanda Bridgeman, with a cover by Christina Myrvold:
“When rock star ‘Dazzler’ walked out on ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’, she hoped she’d seen the last of the clandestine organization. But when a rogue agent drops in after a sold-out gig, she must decide whether to work with them again or stick to her solo career. The agent links ‘Mutant Growth Hormone’, a dangerous biochemical that wildly enhances mutant powers – with the disappearance of ‘Magneto’ and ‘Cyclops’.
“Reluctantly, Dazzler takes the case and unfolds a mystery greater than she anticipated. In need of a new team, she recruits the extraordinary mutants ‘Emma Frost', 'Polaris' and 'Rachel Grey' on a mission to foil a plot to remove mutantkind forever, which blasts them from Earth into a whole new dimension.

Let’s be honest, these new stories that slot into old continuity have been very hit and miss. They get a lot of goodwill from the nostalgia crowd (guilty as charged) but don’t always do enough to really merit their existence. Although capturing a place and time is a big pull for a lot of fans, we still need that story to add to our nostalgia, not tarnish it. Mots, though, have certainly had their hearts in the right place, and I picked this one up as I like early New X-Men stuff, and you always get value for money with Roy Thomas writing. This time round as well Roy gets to write a character that he actually originated but passed on to Len Wein to introduce, Wolverine. For context, this story takes place between the events...
